GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT
SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 9:30 A.M. SERVICE
We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor. • And if your kids are feeling restless, the Church Parlor has toys; the service is amplified in the Parlor and the seats are comfortable! (through the double doors, or outside & around to back)
Prelude Intermezzo op.118 no.2 J. Brahms
(1833-1897)
* Call to Worship
* Our Coming Together Prayer (in unison):
Holy God,
we come together
from beaches and forests,
from lakes and mountains,
from summer camp and summer schools,
from adventures and journeys, from reunions and celebrations,
from summer reading and summer movies;
and yes,
we come together
from work and community,
from sickness and trouble,
from losses and pain.
Yet here we are Lord,
together
with you
in worship.
And that feels good. Amen.
* Hymn, #464 God of Grace and God of Glory Tune Name: CWM RHONDDA
3
* Confession Prayer in unison:
Loving God,
today is our fresh start
our new beginning
our mulligan.
As we begin the new church year
we confess
that in the last church year,
in each of our last 264 years,
we made mistakes.
We fell short of your expectations.
We underperformed as your church. Help us not to make that mistake again.
“Plant our feet on higher ground!”
Amen.
(silence for individual prayers of confession)
* Assurance of Forgiveness
* Gloria Patri Hymnal, no. 35 (This hymn, sung every Sunday, expresses our gratitude for forgiveness)

Worship of God through Prayer
Sharing our Joys and Concerns We welcome your prayer concerns. You may write them into the prayer request book in the
Narthex, or contact the pastors.
Pastoral Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer, said together: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.
4
Worship of God through Giving: (We give in many ways, by various means. Some give monthly, quarterly, yearly, credit
card, by mail or automatic withdrawals. Yet it is still important to “present our offerings” on the altar as part of genuine worship, our way of giving thanks to God.)
Offering
Offertory With A Voice of Singing Martin Shaw
(1875-1958)
* Doxology Hymnal, no. 46 (This ancient hymn is sung every Sunday to thank God for all the gifts of our lives)
* Prayer of Dedication, said together:
Holy God, we bring our offerings as symbols of ourselves: our best
gifts, our best effort, our best gratitude, our best intentions. Use them
powerfully, O Lord. Amen.

Commissioning of our Church School Volunteers (and kids!)
Marcia: (to our Church School volunteers) Friends, God has called
you to be the ones through whom our children learn the story
of God’s love. We are thankful for your willingness to serve
among us, and ask God’s blessing on your ministry.
Volunteers: We have heard God’s call on our lives, and are ready to share
the good news of Christ to these children. We pray for the
presence of the Spirit, that we may be gifted with openness,
truth, creativity, patience and delight!
David: (to parents) Parents, will you do all you can to support these
friends, your sisters and brothers in faith, as they share the
Story with your children?
Parents: We will! We promise to share in teaching God’s love to our
children, by talking together, praying together, and living in
love together.
Alida: (to the children) Church School kids, will you promise to
listen and to talk, to pray and to laugh, to have a good time, to
teach your teachers sometimes, and to learn all you can about
God’s love for you in Jesus? If you’ll do those things, please
say “We Promise!”
Children: We promise!
Alida: (to us all) Let us together pledge our support and care to our
kids:
All: We promise you our love so that you will know God’s Love.
We promise you our friendship so that you will know
Christ’s friendship.
We offer you our joy so that you will know God’s joy.
And together we will be a church of laughter and hope!

CHURCH NOTES
WELCOME! After a wonderful season our church kicks into high gear this week. Every aspect of our church life is full speed ahead. After 294 years, we are not old, bored, or
tired. Your presence at church adds to our energy and enthusiasm.
Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag
home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in
joining this church, please just speak with Alida!
At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Ellen Waugh and
our Junior Deacons Charlie Simon and Hope Smith. At our 10:30 a.m. service,
you have been greeted by Deacon Ellen Waugh and Junior Deacons Alyvia
Ronning and Olivia Savino. Junior Deacons assisting with Church School are
Maggie Burns, Cole Markham, Kerry McKeon, and Sophie Nightingale.
A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy
worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the
street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so
that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child
misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use
of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and
through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to
play with toys and a speaker which carries the service!
The flowers on the communion table are given with gladness in our hearts for
a wonderful kick off to a new church year.
We have a number of days available this fall for giving flowers on the
communion table in memory or celebration of someone. The process is
incredibly easy, all you need to do is contact our Flower Chairperson, Lynn
Davies at [email protected] or on her cell at 203-218-0608.

The Chancel Choir is open to anyone who loves music,
regardless of ability. In fact, the best church choirs are
made up of all types of voices: professional, amateur,
shower crooners and road-trip belters alike! All are invited to drop in on a rehearsal in the Parlor on Tuesdays at 7:30
pm. Be sure to come early to have a snack and chat with
friends, and when you find yourself having a great time,
you are welcome to join us as often as you like — even if
you have to miss some rehearsals. For more information, please feel free to
reach out to our Music Director, Dr. Michael Crowley at
Junior Choir: We are looking for new members to help round out our sound
and enable us to perform more complex music. Kids of all ages who like to
sing are more than welcome. HIGH SCHOOL AND middle school leaders
are especially encouraged! We will rehearse as regularly scheduled from 8:30-
8:55 in the first-floor classroom at the end of the hall. Parents, come enjoy a
cup of coffee before worship while your children sing! First rehearsal is on
Sunday, September 15th at 8:30! If you are interested, please contact Sara

NOTES ABOUT TODAY’S MUSIC
Our music for this Sunday begins with a tender and passionate late miniature of
Johannes Brahms, completed in 1893 and dedicated to his dear friend and
confidant, Clara Schumann—a virtuoso pianist and the widow of Robert
Schumann. The concise, experimental, and distilled nature of Brahms’ late
piano works reflects a unique trend among many composers entering their final
years. We will then all join together to sing God of Grace and God of Glory, set to
a rousing Welsh hymn-tune, CWM RHONDDA! The soloists, choir, and
congregation will all join in song during Mark Miller’s anthem, “Welcome,”
which calls us to come together in community. Written in 1923, Martin Shaw’s
lofty “With A Voice of Singing” has been a perennial favorite of church choirs
across North America. We will conclude our service with a traditional Swati
melody, which invites brothers and sisters to walk with God, while carrying out
His work. Lastly, I will play one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most unusual and
daring creations—the Italian Concerto composed in 1725—a piece which
captures the vibrant spirit of Vivaldi’s concerti grossi within a single keyboard
instrument. ~Michael Crowley
