GREENFIELD HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT

JUNE 9, 2019 9:00 & 10:30 A.M. SERVICES

We love kids! But sometimes services are too long for even the happiest child. So ... • For infants we have nursery care in the Church House, first floor.

• For children from 3’s through 7th grade, we have a wonderful Church School program during our 9:00 hour.

• And if your kids get squirmy, the Church Parlor has toys; the service is amplified in the Parlor and the seats are comfortable!

Prelude Pavane Gabriel Faure

Call to Worship

Choral Introit (10:30)

* Hymn of Praise For the Beauty of the Earth Hymnal, no. 56

* Opening Prayer, said together:

Gracious, giving God, already we have sung our gratitude:

for the beauty of the earth,

for the joys of ear and eye,

for love which surrounds us from our birth.

We pray that what we have sung we may truly feel:

gratitude for every gift of our lives.

Forgive us for those times when we lose sight of your goodness.

Forgive us when forget that you are the source of all love.

On this day when we say 'thank you', our first thanks is to you. Amen.

(silence for individual prayers of confession)

CHURCH NOTES

Welcome! Today is ‘Thank you Sunday’! In our worship services today we offer our thanks to some of the people who are our ‘unsung heroes’ – making our church life and

ministry as rich and full as it is. And we are thankful that you are here with us today!

Visitors: We are glad you are with us today. Want to know more? Take a bag

home from our Visitors’ Table, just outside the front door! If you are interested in

joining this church, please just speak with Alida!

At our 9:00 a.m. service, you have been greeted by Deacon Jason Dies and

Junior Deacons Andrew Jones and Skylar Wingate. At our 10:30 a.m. service,

you have been greeted by Deacon Jason Dies, Junior Deacons Maggie Burns

and Brooke Byrne, and our Junior Greeter Julianna Zold. Junior Deacons

assisting with Church School are James Richard, George Wyckoff, Zachary

Amendola, Hudson Houghton, and Maddy Baker. Our crib room helper today

is Chloe Whelan.

A note about children in worship: We love them! But if you’d prefer to enjoy worship on your own, our Church Nursery for infants-toddlers is across the

street in the Church House. Special beepers/pagers are available to parents so

that they may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child

misses them! If your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use

of the Parlor (through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and

through the side doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to

play with toys and a speaker which carries the service!

Fabulous Fellowship: After the 9am service, please join the Fellowship Board

in the Church House Memorial Room (across the street) for refreshments and

fellowship.

The flowers on the communion table are given with thanks for all our unsung

heroes today.

At our Sacrament of Baptism today, we welcome Nathan Patrick Ashley.

Nathan was born on October 9, 2018. His mom is Patricia Ashley and his

grandmother is Laura Ashley. Nathan’s godmother is Shannon Laukhuf. The Deacons present a white rose to the family in honor of Nathan’s baptisms

today.

CHURCH AND COMMUNITY NOTES

Alida’s recruiting adult leaders for the Appalachia trip!! We still need about

5 more adults to accompany our 225 teenagers to West Virginia June 29th-

July 6th, for a life-changing week of service through the Appalachia Service

Project. It’s a week of home repair for families in need – but you do not need to be a skilled carpenter!! All we need is your willingness to work alongside our

teens. Please take a look at the Adult Leader information on the ASP page of

our church website (greenfieldhillchurch.com/asp) … and if you like what you

see, click on the online adult advisor registration!

Interested in the Greenfield Hill Church trip to

India? Each year Alida leads a group of teens and

adults to visit the work of Friends of Christ in India

(FOCI), our own non-profit aiding India. This year's

trip takes place from Dec. 27 to January 7. An

introductory meeting takes place on Monday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the

Church Parlor (at the back of the Sanctuary).

Christmas in... May? YES!! We are already thinking about our annual Advent Devotional and are looking for 42 church friends to write reflections for the booklet. After Labor Day, we will give you a scripture passage to look at, and then you write a brief (150 words or so) devotional and a short prayer. People love it and you will enjoy doing it! Truthfully it will be a meaningful and fulfilling experience. Sign up today by emailing the church office at [email protected], or let David know!

TWIN SINS Racism Anti-Semitism

David’s winter sermon “Twin Sins” (January 13, 2019, greenfieldhillchurch.com/sermons-online/) called us as Christian people to heed God’s call to turn away from two destructive evils that have caused so much hurt.

Is there a path forward? Reading, learning, thinking help.

David is looking for 20 individuals or couples to read two tough books on race over the summer. Then join together in September for a conversation with David and Alida. Both books are by serious evangelical Christians, an elderly black Mississippi Civil Rights veteran and a young white North Carolina pastor. Their faith compels their hope.

The cost is $30 for the books, and they will be available next Sunday. Will you volunteer? Let us know ASAP.

Regarding anti-Semitism, another effort is in the works. More info soon.

“My America” Goes to Washington David’s essay has drawn thoughtful and exciting response from

hundreds of readers and a dozen groups.

Now it is going to our nation’s capital. Thanks to a wonderful donation from a dear friend, My America is being sent to every

Senator and every member of the House of Representatives.

What can you do? First, pray it along! From an office person to senior staff to the Congressperson, may the way be open. In our weekly Bible Study God’s call to Isaiah is to get people to see and to hear and to understand. May this little essay help that to happen. Second, would you like our Connecticut elected officials to receive a copy? Any donation can help that happen. Third, give one to someone you know would care enough to think it through. Remember, it is a free gift.

CELEBRATING THE BAPTISM OF

NATHAN PATRICK ASHLEY

Introduction

Parent Prayer (Patricia): Kind God, I ask you to bless my journey of faith with

Nathan. With the help of his church family, I promise to teach him the way of

love taught to us by Jesus. By your guiding hand, may he be led to a strong and

sure faith in you. Amen.

Godparent Promises (Shannon):

Do you promise to be a loving friend to your godchild, and faithful

companion on his life’s journey? I do.

Will you show him, in word and deed, what it means to live as a child of

God, caring and compassionate? I will.

And will you listen to his questions, share in his wonder, and help him to

find God in every moment of his life? I will!

Congregation’s Prayer: Nathan, with joy we take you into our hearts. Here in

this family of faith, we will pray for you always, and surround you with our

love and our hope. By our promises today we are bound together

forever. Amen.

Baptism

Song of Welcome:

Welcome, Nathan, welcome, see our hands reach toward you,

Did you hear our promise to care, to teach, to love you?

Welcome, Nathan, welcome, to God’s house today

Now you are invited to learn, to love, to pray.
