British consumers are among the most likely of the 18 groups surveyed to prefer to buy things “used” or pre-owned rather than brand new. They have become more likely to do this compared to 2008. However, they are among the least likely to prefer to repair something that is broken rather than replacing it.

They are among the most frequent users of their own bags when shopping. However, British consumers are the second least likely group to buy environmentally friendly products, and are more likely than the 18-country average to think environmentally friendly products are not worth the extra cost.

Their households contain close to average numbers of TVs and computers compared to the other groups surveyed.

British consumers are the most frequent consumers of imported foods, and among the least frequent consumers of locally grown food, of the 18 groups surveyed.

Their consumption of self-grown food, as well as of organic or natural food, is below the 18-country average.

In comparison to the other surveyed groups, British consumption of fish and seafood is above average, but their consumption of beef is below average.

British consumers are among the most likely of the 18 groups surveyed to use natural gas to heat their homes, and are much more likely to use this than other energy sources.

There has been an increase in British consumers’ reported purchasing of “green” electricity since 2012.

Consumers in Britain are among the least likely to wash laundry in cold water to save energy. They are also among the least likely of the consumers in the 18 countries surveyed to have installed energy-saving appliances in the past year.

Consumers in Britain report above average use of local public transporta-tion in comparison to other surveyed consumers. British consumers are also among the most frequent users of regional trains.
