JMR completes V8ST round one with two cars in the top ten!

We are all catching our breath after competing in the most exciting and competitive V8 touring car series to hit New Zealand since the Nissan Mobil 500 days in the ‘80s! The opening round of the V8Su-perTourers at Hampton Downs last weekend saw the biggest crowd for a domestic series in a long time with 20,000 eager fans turning out over the weekend. And they sure got to see great racing – some of the best racing we’ve all seen in a long time. We all wondered if the cars would produce good racing considering they are all very similar, but that concern was unfounded as all three races saw positions changing every lap.

From my perspective, we didn’t produce the results we were ultimately looking for, but we learned a great deal about the cars that we can take into round two. I have not diced so hard with other cars in a very long time – my battle with Andy Knight in race two was a highlight, especially since I stayed ahead of him after swapping sixth and seventh positions around ten times!

With such a poor performance in qualifying – Steve 10th and I was 13th – we were always going to be behind the 8-ball. On Friday our cars were working extremely well, with Steve setting the fifth quickest time and I was sixth and just 0.2s off the fastest time. However on Saturday morning we were given a minimum weight for the cars just 30 minutes before qualifying. We weighed our cars and found them to be more than 20 kg lighter than other cars, which reflects well on the excellent build process by Jason Liefting and the JMR team in Taupo. But as we had no time to add properly-bal-anced weight with lead or ballast, we had to use fuel to come up to the minimum weight, including the driver, of 1,390 kg.

We decided to change the cars’ suspension set-up to counter the extra weight at the back of the car and it just did not work. The cars were relatively easy to drive on Friday, and then they were both a real handful! I didn’t even look at my qualifying time until the end of the session, just knowing the car was awful to drive and the lap times would be too uncompetitive.

From this point on we slowly made improvements to the cars over the three races, but never made the quantum leap back to Friday’s performance. This was a classic example of a series of small things that lead us down the wrong path with the car set-up and we just never recovered enough. With the beauty of hindsight we now know exactly were we need to be to be back on the case for the second round at Ruapuna at Easter.

I need to thank Steve Richards and the whole JMR team – no one ever once gave up on producing a finish worthy of our efforts. In race three I finally cracked the podium in car #47 – after starting eight, I finished second in the open-ing weekend’s feature race and gained valuable points for the championship, and very importantly our first V8Su-perTourers trophy! Meanwhile Steve drove from virtually the back of the field to place the #556 car fourth – it was a ‘cleaver’ drive through the field during a race that saw many of our competitors throw away strong finishes.

So, not the overall result we were looking for, but an amazing weekend nonetheless. Finally I’d like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters who have backed us with the new V8SuperTourers series. It’s breathed life into New Zealand motor racing at the top level and it is set to continue with strong interest from the fans and media alike. It’s great to have you with us!

See you all at Ruapuna at Easter!

Welcome, continued...

Round 1 wrap-upQualifyingBeing able to earn championship points adds yet another incentive to qualify well for JMR. Regrettably, as John explained in his section, the late notification that all cars would be weighed before qualifying meant JMR wasn’t as well prepared as the team normally is.

With Steve’s tenth quickest time of 1:05.040 he was just 0.568 seconds away from Kayne Scott on pole and only one-hundredth of a second behind Eddie Bell in ninth – shows how closely matched these cars are! With the 13th fastest time, John was less than seven-tenths of a second behind Scott. As John has said, it’s going to come down to fractions of seconds to win in V8SuperTourers.

Race 1The rolling start provided challenges for Greg Murphy, up beside Scott on the front row and that confusion fed down the field to catch out several competitors including Steve was shoved into the dirt, then spun and had to claw his way back up the field. Meanwhile John took advantage to improve from 13th to eighth by lap two and had a good chase on his hands with Ant Pedersen. John finished ninth and Steve 13th, and then the team had another late night working on the cars to try and find that ‘sweet spot’ they both had on Friday.

Race 2Starting from the position where they finished the first race, there was only one way to go for JMR – and that was forward! Steve seemed to have a target painted on him, getting tagged again and losing the rear diffuser, but steadily he bought the #556 car up place by place to finish tenth. From ninth, John improved after the first safety car intervention to engage in what was described by commentators as the ‘battle of the race’ with Andy Knight for about six of the 25 laps. John eventually bought #47 home in sixth place. Interestingly both JMR cars laid down their fastest lap times in the last few laps of the race, while most other competitors did their quickest laps around lap four or five.

Race 3The starting grid is determined by points from qualifying and the first two races, so John started in eighth and Steve in 11th. With the first two races done, it seemed like half the drivers took a ‘silly pill’! Dramatic was one way to describe these 30 laps; brilliant racing is another as the 20,000-strong crowd cheered on their favourites. John was through to fifth by the end of the chaotic first lap and soon Steve made it into the top ten. When Murphy took Scott out on lap ten, Jonny Reid grabbed the lead with John chasing hard from second place. After the safety car around lap 20, Reid got a jump as John chased him down. Then Scott McLaughlin pulled a decisive move on John and Pedersen, before Pedersen also got past John, the leaders now Reid, Pedersen, John with Steve having carved through to seventh. After another safety car, the restart was all on. Reid lost out to one-two-three cars, leaving Pedersen in the lead and John second as Steve shot through to claim a well-deserved fourth place.
