Green IT : Optimum use of ICT to manage sustainability of Enterprise operations and Supply Chain as well as its products, services and resources.

“Green IT: The New Industry Shock Wave” By Gartner Inc, ICT industry accounted for 2% of worldwide CO2 emissions.

Emissions came mainly from data centers having servers, monitors and other components.

A desktop computer- 100 watts power/hr or 2.4 KWhs/day.

Coal needed for this- 714 pounds/year, burning of which releases a ton of CO2

For every 100 KW of energy supplied to a data center only 3 KWs are used efficiently

The Other side

IT industry helps to bring down 98% of CO2 emissions by non IT industry.

Examples: Substitution of Travelling by Teleconferencing, Telecommuting and minimization of transactional delays with e-governance

Acc to “K. Raghuraman”, head of Green IT at Wipro Green: It is about opportunities for IT companies to generate green revenue by reducing carbon footprint of IT as well as non-IT industries

IT for Green :When IT is used to reduce Carbon footprint of non IT industry

Small wastages at IT has led to ICT industry contribution to Global warming

Page 6: Green IT matters at Wipro Ltd

GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming is the increase of Earth's average surface temperature due

to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane etc. caused

due to emissions

IPCC (1988) by WMO and UNEP published series of reports on climate

change laying foundations for measures to counteract such change

It brought Business enterprises into alert about environment regulations

Since Feb 2003, EU has revisited regulations on Waste Electrical and

Electronic Equipment

Since July 2005, Restricted use of hazardous substances and promotion of

recycling in Electronic products

Eco-design requirements for energy using products

Since Oct 2007, Us has put emission limits on utility, transportation and

manufacturing industries.

Kyoto Protocol: International agreement adopted in Japan in

1997 to set a cap on GHG emissions for 37 industrialized

countries and 27 EU nations so as to reduce it to 5% against

1990 levels over 2008-2012.

As of 2009, 186 countries had ratified Kyoto protocol including

India.

A large no. business houses have taken CSR initiatives -

networking with NGO’s with grassroot expertise to take care of

delivery ends

The goal is to take care of those at the bottom of the pyramid.

IT INDUSTRY: AN OVERVIEW It is worth US $1.36 trn in 2008 compared to US $ 1 trn in 2001

Hardware constitutes 40% of IT spending: Application systems, client

systems, storage and peripheral systems

Impact on Environment:

Use of toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead and diphenyls in hardware

components generates non degradable e –waste.

Acer and Lenovo were the first to eliminate usage of hazardous chemicals

from their PC’s.

Wipro in 2006 took steps to track product lifecycle from manufacture to

final disposal.

Wipro is among the only 3 companies in India to implement “take back

services”.

Software comprises of System software and Application

software

Today Software companies are putting in place code

review processes for their programmers

It has led to Green software development i.e. the

development of programs which can be executed with

minimum processing capabilities.

Services sector in India started in mid 1990’s when

Software companies started doing data entry tasks for

their clients in U.S.

ITES companies had maximum opportunities for driving IT

for Green. They can provide solutions for clients which not

only reduces carbon footprints but is helpful in making

new products and can increase their revenue.

COMPANY BACKGROUND

Wipro was established in Maharashtra to manufacture

hydrogenated vegetable oil

It diversified into lighting and hydraulics manufacturing

before getting into IT

Wipro in 1980 became a global corporation in IT enabled

services headquartered in Bangalore

It has 4 business segments: IT services, IT products,

Infrastructure Engineering and consumer & lighting

Page 12: Green IT matters at Wipro Ltd

Contd... It generates 70% of its’ revenues from clients in U.S and E.U

It remain insulated from environment regulations in these countries

because of its’ offshoring model.

Efficiency improvement initiatives taken at Wipro:

Six Sigma (1997)

Lean(2004)

Agile(2005)

-One of the earliest companies to get ISO 14001 certificate

-Net energy consumption at Wipro has come down from 360 KWhs to 309

KWhs

-Meets 52% of its’ water requirements through rain water harvesting and

recycling

Page 13: Green IT matters at Wipro Ltd

In its’ Bangalore campus, waste from cafeteria turns into

Methane for lighting burners

Harvested rain water is used to cool air conditioning towers

Waste paper is recycled into writing pads

Micro windmill lights bulbs throughout the campus

All flouroscent lamps replaced with LED bulbs

Since 2003, it has cut water usage in all it’s offices by

nearly 66%

CSR AT WIPRODebuted in CSR through “ Wipro applying Thought” in

schools in 2001

Networked with 30 organizations in 17 provinces in India, it

conducted a regular Education Programme for school

Principals to help them with skills to generate a facilitative

environment for change processes

Also conducted special programmes for teachers to

increase the quaity of primary education in India

Wipro-cares , an in-house programme meant for

employees and their family members to participate in social

causes.

Page 15: Green IT matters at Wipro Ltd

Contd... Eco-Eye, a charter for ecological sustainability in 2008

It had a governing council, consisted of senior managers which

had direct support from top management

Goals:

Green procurement policy: To ask its’ top 50 suppliers to

disclose their GHG and water footprint

Customer Stewardship: To help customers reduce their carbon

footprint

One Wipro model: Offer solutions with IT for Green, Green IT,

clean energy, water and lighting

COMPULSION FOR GREEN IT AT WIPRO Compulsion

Element Drivers

Regulatory

Kyoto protocol Kyoto Protocol (2008-2012) exempted countries like China and India from GHG emission reduction targets

E-waste India has a draft policy on e-waste which will soon become a regulatory policy.

Physical

Weather Global warming has resulted in extreme weather conditions around the world, impacting Wipro‘s business

Rise in Sea Level

The IPCC has predicted a minimum rise in sea levels of 2 feet by 2100 which can have a severely damaging impact on the infrastructure assets of Wipro which has operations in several coastal cities in India.

Human Health Outbreaks of malaria and dengue are likely to be more common in tropical countries like India due to global warming, affecting Wipro‘s workforce and its operations.

General

Energy Scarcity India experiences an average deficit of 14% in peak hours and 9% in non-peak hours. The increasing gap in demand- supply can result in high operational costs to the company

Water Scarcity India‘s demand for water will exceed supply by the year 2020, at present, India uses an estimated 829 billion cubic yards of water annually and in the near future, this will rise to exceed the 1.4 trillion cubic yards that it can supply.

Demand Scarcity

Operations of customer segments like Insurance, Energy and Utility can be impacted by climate change. It may increase their cost of operations and reduce the volume of their business with Wipro.

GLOBAL COMPETITORS

IBM: In 2007 unveiled “Project Big Green” focussing on

efficient use of energy in 30 mn sqft of data centers

The goal was to double their computing capacity without

increasing their carbon footprint

It has positioned it’s financing business segment “IBM

Global Financing” as a provider of Green Wrapper for

financing data centers to achieve energy efficiency.

HP owned e-waste recycling plants was the first step in

reclaiming not just steel and plastic but even toxic chemicals

It also audited it’s vendors for eco-friendliness

SAP AG had also in 2009 put its’ focus on sustainability for

both its’ own operations and solutions for customers
