From courgettes to spinach; toma-toes to blackcurrants, most gardeners will recognise the sinking feeling that creeps over you when you have had such a good harvest that you cannot face picking, cook-ing or eating any more. And even if you haven’t grown them yourself, it is easy to end up with too many fruit or vegetables after just one visit to the local pick-your-own centre or a trip to a country hedgerow.

With the help of this book you will be able to make the most of any glut. It contains over 250 recipes for using fresh produce in new and exciting ways, and also explains how to pickle, preserve, dry, bottle or juice your surplus fruit and vegetables so that they can be enjoyed throughout the year.

In 2008, the bestselling The Transition Handbook suggested a model for a community-led response to peak oil and climate change. Since then, the Transition idea has gone viral around the world, from Italian villages and Brazilian favelas to universities and London boroughs. In contrast to the ever-worsening stream of information about climate change, the economy and resource depletion, Transition focuses on solutions, on community-scale responses, on meeting people and on having fun.

The Transition Companion picks up the story today. It tells inspiring tales of communities working for a future where local economies are valued and nurtured; where lower energy use is seen as a benefit; and where enterprise, creativity and the building of resilience have become cornerstones of a new economy. It combines these remarkable stories with practical advice on the tools needed to start and maintain a Transition initiative.

FUTURE MONEYBreakdown or breakthrough?

James Robertson

Future Money explains in plain language and convincing detail how money is now working to propel us toward the self-destruction of our species – and what we should do about it. Money is not itself the problem, but, in the way it works at present, it affects us as a diseased blood or brain system affects a living person.

The world’s financial experts and leaders in politics, gov-ernment and business, and most mainstream academic and media commentators, have shown in the past few years that they are not yet able or willing to diagnose and treat the problem.

The book clearly shows how the money system works and how it could be reformed so that it acts for the benefit of people and society rather than the opposite, and describes the obstacles that currently prevent a reform of the money system.

The author James Robertson, who has been described as ‘the grandfather of green economics’, worked in the Cabinet Office and as a researcher for British banks. In the 1970s he was one of the co-founders of The Other Economic Summit and the new economics foundation. His other books include The Sane Alternative, Future Wealth and Future Work.

CONVERGENCE WITH NATUREA Daoist perspective

David E. Cooper

OCTOBER 2011Green BooksISBN 978 0 85784 023 3 216mm x 158mm160pp £10.95 pb

In this book David E. Cooper explores our relationship to nature – to animals, to plants, to natural places – and asks how it can be shaped into an appropriate one that contributes to the good of people’s lives as a whole. Religions and philosophies have much to say about our relationship with nature, and Chinese Daoist philosophy has long been regarded as among those most sympa-thetic to the natural world. Daoists seek an attunement to the Dao (the Way), which is characterised by a sense of flow (water being a favourite metaphor), spontaneity, non-interference, humility and patience – virtues which contrast with the aggressive and exploitative values of a modern world increasingly subject to economic imperatives.

Like the best of contemporary nature writing, the classic Daoist texts reveal a yearning for convergence with nature, nostalgia for a lost intimacy with the natural world, disillusion with humanity or its products, and a feeling for nature’s mystery. The author explains how these attitudes are rooted in Daoist philosophy and explores their implications for our practical engagement with natural environments. He also discusses a number of ethical issues, including hunting, intensive farming, and environmental activism, that must be addressed in any efforts to heal our relationship with the Earth.

The author David E. Cooper was Professor of Philosophy at Durham University for many years and has been a visiting professor at universities in the United States, Canada, Malta, Sri Lanka and South Africa. His philosophical interests range from environ-mental ethics to aesthetics, from the philosophy of language to Asian thought, from the history of phi-losophy to the philosophy of religion, and he is the author of many books.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFULIN THE 21ST CENTURYThe legacy of E. F. Schumacher

Schumacher Briefi ng No.17

Diana Schumacher

During the 35 years since the publication of Fritz Schum-acher’s seminal bestseller Small is Beautiful: economics as if people mattered, many of his prophetic warnings have come to pass. Yet little is remembered of the man himself, the sources of his spiritual inspiration or the remedies he prescribed for a collapsing environmental and financial world order. Small is Beautiful in the 21st Century traces Schumacher’s legacy through the activities and outreach of those pioneers who, over the years, have been working on practical solutions to our interrelated global crises. In particular, it describes how several flourishing organisa-tions, some large and some small, have remained closely linked with his ideas and work, and have since become associated as the Schumacher Circle. The particular contribution of Fritz Schumacher was to bring a profound wisdom and humanity to bear on the practical challenges of our time, and the Briefing both illuminates Schumacher’s thinking and shows the ways in which each of us can help to turn our present crisis into the opportunity to build a more kind, just and ecologically sustainable society.

The authorDiana Schumacher OBE has served on the executive councils of numerous charities, including the new economics foundation, the Green Alliance, the Schumacher Society and the India Development Group. She was co-founder (and remains a Trustee) of the Environmental Law

Foundation.

THE BEE-KIND GARDENApian wisdom for your garden

David Squire

Bees have been a major part of our lives for thousands of years, because they are pollinators of both food and ornamental plants, and without them our ability to feed ourselves would be at great risk. In earlier centuries, honey was the major provider of sweetness in food as well as the basis for mead, an age-old drink fermented with yeast from a mixture of honey and water. It is not surprising that bees and honey have become interwoven in many aspects of our lives, from honeymoons to ‘telling bees’ about deaths and marriages in families.

The Bee-Kind Garden gives a wealth of information about the intriguing lives of honeybees, and includes many amusing and illuminating stories about the role that they have played in human history. The book explains how crucial bees are to our food chain, and describes how you can attract them to your garden.

With beautiful woodcuts and illustrations throughout, this book is a charming gift for naturalists, gardeners and bee-keepers alike.

The author David Squire has a great interest in bees. He is a gardening expert and the author of more than 80 gardening books. Having enjoyed bee-keeping in earlier life, he now focuses on creating his own beautiful, bee-friendly garden.

CHANTERELLE DREAMS, AMANITA NIGHTMARESThe love, lore and mystique of

mushrooms

Greg Marley

Throughout history, people have had a complex and con-fusing relationship with mushrooms. Are fungi food or medicine; beneficial decomposers or deadly ‘toadstools’ ready to kill anyone foolhardy enough to eat them? In fact, there is truth in all these statements. In Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares, Greg Marley reveals some of the wonders and mysteries of mushrooms, and our conflicting human reactions to them.

This fascinating and fresh look at mushrooms – their nat-ural history, their uses and abuses, their pleasures and dangers – is a splendid introduction to both fungi them-selves and to our human fascination with them. From useful descriptions of the most foolproof edible species to revealing stories about hallucinogenic or poisonous, yet often beautiful, fungi, Marley’s long and passionate experience of these dark and mysterious denizens of our forest floor will both inform and inspire.

The author Greg Marley is an avid student and teacher of mycology, as well as a mushroom identification consultant to the Northern New England Poison Control Centre and owner of Mushrooms for Health, a company that provides education and products made with Maine medicinal mushrooms. He is author of Mushrooms for Health: Medical Secrets of North-eastern Fungi. He lives and mushrooms in Rockland, Maine.

LIVING HOMESStone masonry, log and strawbale

construction

Thomas J Elpel

The house of your dreams does not have to be expensive. The key is all in the planning. How much a house costs, how it looks, how comfortable it is, how energy-efficient it is – all these things occur on paper before you pick up even one tool. A little extra time in the planning process can save you tens of thousands of dollars in construction and maintenance. That is time well spent!

Living Homes takes you through the planning process to design an energy- and resource-efficient home that won’t break the bank. Then, from the footings to the roof, Thomas J. Elpel guides you through the nuts and bolts of construction – for slipform stone masonry, tilt-up stone walls, log home construction, building with straw bales, solar water systems, masonry heaters, framing, plumbing, grey water, septic systems, swamp filters, concrete / fly ash counter tops, painting, making your own terra tile floors, windows and doors, and more.

Living Homes was completely reorganised and revised for the new sixth edition, based on five additional years of building experience with low-cost, high-efficiency construction methods. Get the latest ideas on how to build a high-performance house that will stand the test of time! This edition includes 15 pages of new material covering the latest stone masonry advice, plus revised and expanded tips and techniques throughout the book.

The author Thomas J. Elpel started his building career from a tent in 1989: he and his wife started to build their passive solar stone-and-log dream home, although they had little construction experience and even less money. Elpel has continued to refine his ideas on low-cost, high-efficiency construction ever since, designing and building, or participating in the construc-tion, of several additional stone, log, and strawbale buildings.

THE NEW FOOD GARDENGrowing beyond the vegetable garden

Frank Tozer

This ground-breaking new book expands the concept of food gardening to embrace the whole garden. The New Food Garden is centred around the intensive vegetable garden, but doesn’t stop there – it puts hedges, ponds, pathways, lawns, roofs and walls to work as additional growing space for food plants. And the author doesn’t just look upon the garden as a place to grow food: it should also be beautiful, comfortable and efficient. His ultimate aim is to change the way we approach the garden so that it feeds, heals and nurtures us.

Schumacher was a key figure in the development of environmen-talism in the twentieth century, and has left an enduring legacy. He was one of the first to recognise the impossibility of continu-ous growth in a finite world, and warned against the world’s increasing dependence on oil. His particular genius was to bring together the theoretical and the practical, and this fascinating biography shows how his understanding changed and evolved as a result of his rigorous and questioning search for truth.

ECONOMICS UNMASKEDFrom power and greed to compassion and the common good

Phillip B. Smith & Manfred Max-Neef

“Smith and Max-Neef have done something remarkable and necessary – they have set the self-deceptions of main-stream economics and the real world on to a collision course.” Andrew Simms, nef (new economics foundation)

Economics Unmasked presents a cogent critique of the dominant economic system, showing that it works mainly to bring about injustice and is also responsible for the merciless onslaught on the global ecosystem. The book outlines the foun-dations of a new economics – where justice, human dignity and reverence for life are the guiding values. Contrary to the absurd assumption of mainstream economists that economics is a value-free science, a new economics must make its values explicit.
