From the team behind 2015’s runaway bestseller Irelandopedia comes a dazzling new adventure through Ireland’s history.
From the earliest settlements right up to the present day, take a trip through time and meet courageous Celts, rampaging Vikings and rebellious Republicans. Historopedia looks at wars and disasters; introduces artists, explorers and leaders; and shows us castles, cottages and tenements. There are also some dragons, mythical figures and TV characters along the way!
This breathtakingly exciting book discovers Ireland, era by era, as you’ve never seen it before. So get ready, time travellers, it’s time to discover the story of Ireland from then until now!

It was a time when your brother persuaded you to eat the grease behind the cooker by telling you it was caramel, your house was blown up by lightning, your dad mixed up the toothpaste and the ‘arse cream’, and you fell asleep on Sunday nights to the sound of your neighbours – who were all named Paddy – drunkenly singing ‘Magic Moments’ in the good front room. All of this while trying to stop your wonky eye from giving the game away.
Adventures of a Wonky-Eyed Boy is a unique and hilarious memoir of Irish childhood, which will be recognised by many with a sense of nostalgia and disbelief for how times have changed (perhaps not for the better!). Reading like fiction but all the funnier because it’s true, with fantastic illustrations by Nicky Phelan throughout, Adventures of a Wonky-Eyed Boy is Ireland’s answer to The Wimpy Kid.

A little over 18 months ago, Peter Varga began a photo project that would change the course of his life. Inspired by the success of the world-famous blog, ‘Humans of New York’, he began to walk the streets of Dublin, interviewing and photographing those he met along the way, and uncovering the powerful stories that hide in plain sight as we rush about our lives, too busy to notice. What transpired was a collection of portraits and stories that capture the vibrancy and diversity of Dublin life.
From tales of inspiration and joy to those of heartbreak and loss, all of human life is in this best-of collection from Peter’s library. Presented in a beautifully produced hardback format, Humans of Dublin promises to open readers’ eyes to the humanity that can be found in city living.

Pigín lives in Howth, a beautiful seaside town on Dublin Bay, and he is a very popular pig about town. He is friendly, curious, impeccably dressed and has the nicest manners a pig could possibly have. Join Pigín and his friends, Sammy Seal, Sally Seagull, the Badger of Ballsbridge and the fairies who live in Howth Castle, on their many adventures. In these three stories, Pigín learns how to swim, goes on a magic carpet ride and even gets to meet the President of Ireland! But best of all is Pigín coming home to tell Nanakit all about it.
Straight from Kathleen Watkins’ magical imagination, these stories were originally created for her five grandchildren and are now brought to life in a timeless collection of children’s stories beautifully illustrated by Margaret Anne Suggs.

Here, Dr Ian Gargan draws on personal experience to map the fine line between right and wrong.
Based on real-life interviews and psychological evaluations, Gargan attempts to give a human voice to those incapable of speaking for themselves and to account for the tangled threads of circumstance and mental dysfunction that can propel once normal people to the brink of horrifying acts … and beyond.
The Line is a moving meditation on a life spent at the violent limits of human experience and a mirror held to the dark heart of human nature that will appeal to fans of Making a Murderer and Serial.

How to Be MassiveAOIFE DOOLEY
AU T H O R
Aoife Dooley’s ‘Your One Nikita’ started as a web series based on life on the northside of Dublin. Aoife illustrates some of her experiences growing up in Coolock, while also taking elements from her family and friends and sometimes earwigging on the bus. It has been shared by FM104, Spin 1038, Q102, her.ie and So Sue Me blog. It has also featured in The Irish Times, Stellar Magazine, Offset and The Ray D’arcy Show.

Through her popular Instagram account, ‘Your One Nikita’, illustrator Aoife Dooley has made the spice bag part of our everyday language. Informed by her experiences growing up in Coolock and affectionately parodying fiery working-class Dublin women, it provides the inspiration for her hilarious and brilliantly observed first book, How to be Massive.
Its central character is the irrepressible Nikita. You’ve seen her around town: always within 100 metres of Penneys (where she likes to spend her ‘eurdos’), her hair done up in a ‘hun bun’, sporting her ‘masso’ runners and her thigh tattoo. Here she shares her illustrated guide to being massive, from masso make-up to stunnin’ accessories, the vital difference between your ‘going out’ and ‘staying in’ PJs, as well as life hacks such as places to hide your naggin and how to whiten your runners with toothpaste. How to be Massive is primed to be the Christmas stocking filler gift book for 2016.

Jules Coll was a slim child, which was misleading in a way, as she spent her formative years doing little other than consuming vast quantities of sugar and plotting to secure her next fix. It wasn’t until her late teens, when hormones started to play havoc with her metabolism, that Jules’s diet began to take its toll. Year on year, pound by pound, her weight began to climb upwards until she was tipping the scales at 19 stone.
Self-esteem at rock bottom, her love life on life support, Jules decided it was time to contemplate a radical change. Flabyrinth is the story of Jules’s escape from maximum insecurity prison. As well as sharing her journey from thin to fat and back again, it’s a hilariously refreshing and honest take on what it feels like to be a girl.

In his second book Ronan Moore, author of Irishology, has created a humorous and irreverent guide to every county in Ireland: Galway, where rainfall is measured not in millimetres but in days; Limerick, which is like the Keyser Soze of Irish counties with a name far more notorious than the place ever was; and, of course, Fermanagh, which regularly tops the list of Irish counties that people forget when trying to name all 32.
With a keen eye and sharp wit, Ronan Moore takes us on a cheeky tour of Ireland, pointing out the finest features of our fair isle along the way.

T H E M AT H E M AT I CA L M AG I C I N T H E E V E RY DAY
Mathematics isn’t just for academics and scientists, a fact meteorologist and blogger Peter Lynch has spent the past several years proving through his popular Irish Times newspaper column and blog, ‘That’s Maths’.
Here he shows how maths is all around us, with chapters on the beautiful equations behind designing a good concert venue, predicting the stock market and modelling the atom bomb, as well as playful meditations on everything from the sums involved in coin-stacking to cartography. If you left school thinking maths was boring, think again!

1847 TURTLE BUNBURY
AU T H O R
Turtle Bunbury is one of Ireland’s most recognisable popular historians and a bestselling author, journalist, genealogist and television presenter. Author of the award-winning and bestselling Vanishing Ireland series and the critically acclaimed The Glorious Madness, he lives in Tullow, Co. Carlow, with his wife and two daughters.

Having grown up in an Irish country house built that year, 1847 has long proven the source of inspiration and fascination for historian Turtle Bunbury. In a bid to grasp the spirit of the age, in this book he has assembled the most remarkable stories from those 12 momentous months.
With his penchant for the quirky, it bristles with all manner of life and human endeavour. From the Irish soldiers who fought for Mexico against the United States, to Arctic adventurers, entertainers like Lola Montez and Tom Thumb, and inventors who were slaving over products that would become modern mainstays – such as the doughnut and the Christmas cracker – 1847 is a rollicking journey into the minds of an eclectic bunch of characters in an especially memorable year.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, thousands of Irish men and women arrived in Mexico and South America lured by the promise of adventure, fame and fortune. They and their children fought for independence and helped shape modern Latin America. Here, Tim Fanning, an exciting new voice in Irish historiography, uncovers their extraordinary tales of romance, adventure, war and rebellion.
Featuring armed revolutionaries such as William Brown and Bernardo O’Higgins, trailblazing women like Eliza Lynch and Camila O’Gorman, and Ambrose O’Higgins, the viceroy of Peru, this is the story of how they and many others helped fashion the New World and sowed the seeds of Ireland’s revolutions to follow.

‘A H OUSE TO WHIC H THE BEST OF
IR ISH AUT HORS C AN BRING THEIR
MANUSCRI PTS ’
When Michael Gill founded Gill & Macmillan in 1968, The Irish Times described it as ‘a welcome enterprise’ and hoped it would become a home for the best of Irish authors.
Since then we’ve been honoured to publish the works of great writers and experts such as Noël Browne, Garret FitzGerald, Tom Garvin, Éamon de Buitléar, Myrtle Allen, Susan Jane White, Francis Brennan and Matt Cooper.
We’ve been there in good times and bad, publishing the books you choose to read on every aspect of Irish life: from the 1960s bestseller Prayers of Life to How Stormont Fell; from Rachel’s Favourite Food to The Encyclopaedia of Ireland; from the heady high of The Pope’s Children to the popular reissuing of Soundings in 2010, when perhaps we all needed a bit more poetry in our lives; from Jim McGuinness’ powerful Until Victory Always to Irelandopedia, which celebrated every county in the country, to this year’s bestselling book so far, Roz Purcell’s Natural Born Feeder. Each book, in its own way, captures a slice of life, a slice of the times we live in.
But it was really Michael’s great-great-grandfather who started our story. In 1856, Michael Henry Gill, then the printer to Dublin University, purchased the publishing and bookselling business of James McGlashan, forming McGlashan & Gill, which then became M.H. Gill & Son, then Gill & Macmillan and, in 2016, simply Gill. The bookshop, popularly known as Gills – referenced in James Joyce’s Ulysses – was located on Dublin’s O’Connell Street for 123 years until it closed in 1979.
Whether it’s printing, publishing or bookselling, we believe reading matters. We’ve always believed in Irish talent and we’ve always believed in the curious mind of the Irish reader. If we’ve managed to help produce something from one to satisfy that of the other, it’s been a good day at the office.
Thanks for reading.
