NEW YEAR DAY GREEK SUPERSTITIONS
Primary School of Pteleos, Magnesia, GreeceeTwinning2015-2016
On the first day of the year we break a pomegranate in front of our house door. The more the
seeds fall and spread on the
ground, the more luck the people of
the house will have!
On New Year’s Day you must wear new clothes, or at least something new, if you want it to be a
lucky year!
The first person to visit your house on
New Year’s Day must not be
blond with blue eyes! S/He will bring you very
bad luck!
If you owe money until New Year
Day, then you are going to owe
money for the rest of the year!
On the first day of the New Year, the first person to enter your house must carry sweets
and step inside your house with
his/her right foot!
If you have a fight on New Year Day,
then you are going to fight
throughout the New Year!
On New Year’s Day we cut a
sweet pie which is called
‘vassilopita’. Whoever finds a coin in his/her piece, s/he will
be the lucky person of the
year!
When the clock strikes midnight and the New
Year comes, kiss someone you love and
wish him/her Happy New Year for good luck and a year full of love!
