’‘The Secret Garden was what Mary called it when

she was thinking of it. She liked the name, and sheliked still more the feeling that when its beautiful old walls shut her in, no one knew where she was. It seemed almost like being shut out of the world in some fairy place...

In 1898, Frances

Hodgeson Burnett

moved into Great

Maytham Hall where

she lived for the next

decade.

Watching a robin in the garden one day, she noticed a wooden door hiding in the undergrowth on the wall. Prizing the door open she found an overgrown, neglected garden in a serious state of disrepair.

!e garden had originally beencreated in 1721 and over thecoming years Frances painstakingly brought it back to life, "lling itwith rose bushes.

She could often be found, dressedresplendently in white, writing inthe gazebo on the south eastern side of the garden pictured on the front cover of this brochure.

Her time spent here formed themain inspiration for, perhaps, her greatest work of all; ‘!e Secret Garden’.

The Secret Garden

‘ ’And the roses - the roses! Rising out of the grass...climbing up the walls and spreading over them with long garlands falling in cascades...

Great Maytham Hall was designed in 1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens who some believe to be Britain’sgreatest ever architect.

A proli!c worker, Sir Edwin wenton to create the New Delhi quarterin Delhi that included themagni!cent Viceroys House (nowthe Rashtrapati Bhavan). Amongthe many famous works he createdin Britain is the smaller but highlysigni!cant Cenotaph in Whitehall.

Sir Edwin called upon the servicesof his great friend, Gertude Jekyllto design the gardens you see todayat Great Maytham Hall.

Following years of prosperity, the main house was requisitionedduring the war by the army. Postwar, the estate declined with thehouse laying derelict for some years. In 1965 the Country HouseAssociation bought it and began therenovation process. Sunley Heritagecontinued the restoration of themain house and in 2008 it wasbeautifully converted into !fteenluxury apartments. "e new CoachHouse Mews development by Jarvis& Jarvis completes the estatesreturn to its former glory.

"e illustrious architectural heritageof the estate continues with the newCoach House Mews having beendesigned by Sir Terry Farrell CBE,one of the worlds leading architects. No less prominent than Sir EdwinLutyens, Sir Terry’s famous worksinclude the MI6 Headquarters onthe Albert Embankment, CharingCross Station and the KK100Tower in Shenzhen, currently the tallest building ever designed by a British architect.

Coach House Mews enjoy a uniquearchitectural heritage that ensurestheir place in history as well asbeing a sound, long terminvestment.

Jarvis & Jarvis now have the greatpleasure of o#ering for sale these 5 mews houses set in the stunninggrounds of this wondrous, country estate.
