Color Bangor run will take place in late April and benefit theAmerican Folk Festival

The American Folk Festival has announced the first color fun run totake place in Bangor. The run, called Color Bangor, will take placeon April 26, and will incorporate color, running and walking, andhigh energy. The run will be similar to other color-themed runs thathave taken place throughout Maine and around the country, including "The Color Run" and "Color Me Rad."

We have seen color runs in a number of cities in Maine, and it wassurprising to me that we have not yet seen one in Bangor, saidHeather McCarthy, Executive Director of the American FolkFestival. "These runs are enormously popular, extremely fun, androoted in an long-established Hindu and Indian tradition called theHoli or Festival of Colors. That tradition makes it an even better tie-in with the cultural experience the American Folk Festival brings tothe Bangor Waterfront every Summer."

Color Bangor is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26. It will

be a route that will incorporate the Bangor Waterfront. Participantswill start the route wearing a white Color Bangor T-shirt. At eachkilometer mark, a variety of colors will be launched onto runners, resulting in a colorful display on the runners' shirts and themselves asthey cross the finish line. The "colors" are non-toxic coloredcornstarch, FDA approved and perfectly healthy to use in thismanner.

This is not a road race that will be comprised of only seriousrunners, said McCarthy. "The main objective for Color Bangor is

The Bangor Public Library RenovationTentatively Scheduled for June

    FMI: BangorPublicLibrary.org

Library Officials Estimate Ground Breaking on Interior Renovationin June

The Bangor Public Librarys Building Committee estimatesthat the next phase of the $9-million Yes for the Libraryrenovation and redesign campaign will break ground in June. The project, comprised of fixing the 101-year-old roof, upgrading the interior, and an adding to the Librarysendowment fund, is quickly approaching its fundraising goal.

Im happy to announce that we have under $100,000 left toreach our goal, says Lisa Frazell, Director of Marketing andDevelopment for the Library. We are so thankful for the

outpouring of support from our community, from individuals, businesses and organizations. We just need a few moregenerous gifts to help the Library bring about its vision thatwill better serve everyone in the Bangor area.

The copper dome and roof project will be wrapping up in amatter of weeks and then the interior phase will begin. Withenthusiastic approval from the citys Historic PreservationCommission and a nod of approval from the statecommission, the Building Committee is working on the finalplans, which it hopes will lead to construction starting inJune. The interior redesign, developed by Scott Simons

Architects (Portland), addresses the needs of todays patronswith an eye to having an agile building that will also servefuture generations of library users. A glass atrium will be themost prominent feature of the redesign. It will grace the 1997Robert A.M. Sterns addition. The Childrens Department willrelocate from the first floor to the third floor, while the LocalHistory Room will move from the third floor to the secondfloor. Drawings and floor plans are on display at the Library.

We are so close to our goal, says BarbaraMcDade, Library Director. We know the Library has thesupport of our community and hope that those that havent

been able to donate yet, can step up now. We really needeveryones help. For those that are interested, giving can bemade over time. See the Librarys website for pledge periodsand other ways of giving. For those who donate a minimumof $1,000, the name of their choosing will be etched onthe Librarys glass donor wall. This feature is planned to be inor near the new glass atrium and will be a reminder for futuregenerations of all who helped make the library free and opento all.
