Facts about The Great Lakes• This chain of 5 large freshwater lakes form the largest lake group in the

world, covering an area of 95,000 sq miles. Once vital to fur trading and regional development in the early history of Canada and the United States, the Great Lakes remain a significant transportation route for iron ore, steel, petroleum, grain, American automobiles, and, much more. The Great Lakes have a total shoreline near 10,000 miles, over 350 species of fish, and provide drinking water for over 40 million people.

• Lake superior 82,000 sq km, 31,698 sq miles in size, is the largest fresh water lake in the world. It is about 350 miles long and 160 miles at its widest point. The deepest point is 1,332 ft, while the average depth is 500 ft. Shoreline: 2,730 miles .

• Lake Huron 59,600 sq km, 23,011 sq miles in size, is 206 miles long and 183 miles at its widest point. The deepest point is 750 ft, while the average depth is 195 ft. Shoreline: 3,830 miles.

• Lake Michigan 57,800 sq km, 22,316 sq miles in size, is the largest freshwater lake the United States. It is 307 miles long and 118 miles at its widest point. The deepest point is 925 ft, while the average depth is 279 ft. Shoreline: 1,640 miles

• Lake Erie 25,700 sq km, 9,922 sq miles in size, is 240 miles long, and 3,857 miles wide. The deepest point is 210 ft, while the average depth is 48 ft. Shoreline: 871 miles

• Lake Ontario 18,960 sq km, 7,320 sq miles in size, is about 193 miles long and 53 miles at its widest point. Because of a low elevation above sea level and depths, it doesn't freeze in winter, unlike the other lakes in the chain. The deepest point is 802 ft, while the average depth is 283 ft . Shoreline: 871 miles

My perspective • Hi my name is Nande Bolton. Im the CEO of N.K.B Exports. I live

in Canada. I sell personal need items. People order them from me all throughout the world, and the way I get their items to them is by ship. My products are shipped all across the great lakes so that they can be delivered and sold in the U.S

• Once you take away Canada's access to the great lakes, I have to start paying more to get my products shipped by plane or other methods. Once my products get into the stores. The consumers have to pay more to buy my products, and I don’t think that’s right or fair. I feel that taking away Canada's access to great lakes is taking away the ability for my company and other companies to sell items for a fair price. It is also messing with Canada’s economy.

• If you don’t take away Canada's access to great lakes. I will give the environmental protection program 5% of my profits from my business to help with the pollution problems. I will stop anyone I see from polluting the water, and I’m confident that other Canadian companies would be willing to do the same.

Why are the great lakes vital to Canada's economy?

• Canada is the worlds wealthiest nation. It is also the top ten trading nation. In 2008 Canada’s imported goods were worth more than $442.9 billion of which $280.8 billion was from United states , $11.7 billion was from Japan, and $11.3 billion came from china. Canada makes most of their money by shipping's goods and if you take away their access to great lakes they will no longer have the ability to ship goods across the world and they would no longer make as much money as they just to because they would have to pay the expenses to get the goods to their destination by plane.

• The Great Lakes economic region, comprised of the U.S. states bordering the Great Lakes, the upper Mississippi and Ohio watersheds, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, has a storied economic history.

• Canada has the tenth largest economy in the world. Canada’s economy will be affected if you take away Canada’s access to great lakes cause that’s were most of there money comes from and if you take away their access to great lakes they will lose money.

How does the location of great lakes to Canada make shipping

products easier or less expensive?• Traveling across the great lakes is the only way that Canada

can get their goods transported to their destination for a fair price, and it would make it more expensive because Canada is going to have to pay the expenses to get the goods delivered buy plane , and they already have to pay for their problems with the great lakes.

• Canada makes most of their money by shipping goods across the world, and if you deny their access to great lakes not only will they have to pay more money.

How much revenue is generated for Canada through trade via the great

lakes?•

More than $400 billion in trade goods now flow across the border every year. In the last decade, Canada has even become the largest supplier of energy to the U.S., surpassing the Middle East. Exports include uranium and hydroelectric power, as well as oil and natural . As a result, the countries have created a number of mechanisms for dealing with cross-boundary environmental matters including air, water and migratory wildlife. In particular, policies on water have enjoyed much cooperative environmental management.

Harmonious relations between the United States and Canada have long been a source of pride for both countries. The U.S. is Canada’s largest trading partner, constituting 85% of our two-way trade with other countries.

What cultural affects might happen due to denied access to great

lakes?• Language and Religion: Due to the diverse cultures, Canada has two official

languages, English and French. There is no official religion as such, although Catholics form the largest religious group. There are a number of people in Canada who have declared to have no religious affiliation. Although, there are many other groups that follow Protestantism as a religion .

• Literature: Canadian writers have penned many works that belong to different genres. The literature of Canada basically reflects the cultural melange seen out here. Some of the early works were divided as per the region of Canada. But there also were authors who gave a humorous touch to serious content. Apart from humor, one can notice the frequent reference of nature in the texts. A number of authors have been awarded for their contributions in literature.

• Music: Music in Canada has seen many developments in styles along the way. Many rock groups or musicians from Canada have even made a mark on the global map. From folk music to alternative rock, Canadian music continues to entertain people. The diverse styles are also a result of the mix of cultures. The 1980s was particularly considered an important period as pop and rock music flourished. This was also a time when the media influenced the popularity and spread of music. Music videos helped to popularize tracks amongst people. In the recent times, Caribbean music has found quite a fan following in Canada.
