SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the
Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the
Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to
become vital to both Judaism and Christianity.
Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are
too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remem-
ber that Christ has given them all they have.
Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of
Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples
on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of
the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom,
hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here
speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.”

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
On Friday, February 3rd, 2017 there will be
no anointing of the sick mass due to the Blessing of the throat Mass.
BLESSING OF THE THROAT
Everyone is invited to the blessing of the throat, which will be on Friday, February
3rd, after the 8:00 a.m. morning Mass.
Saint Blaise was a doctor in his profession
and he was martyred during the persecution by Diocletian. Tradition states that on the
way to being martyred, he healed a boy that had a splinter in his throat, and from then on,
he is recognized as the patron saint for those sick with throat illnesses.
MINISTRY DAY: RENEW AND REJOICE
We are inviting leaders and members of the different Ministries in our parish to attend
Ministry Day. Our parish will assist those who want to participate in this event with $15 to
help with registration. Early Registration ends on February 17th and is $35. The cost will be $40 after February
17th and at the door. A boxed lunch is available for $3 with early
registration only. Ministry Day will be held on March 18, 2017 at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton.

This presentation will be on how to apply for scholarships and the money available for scholarships called Stan Futures. You
will also obtain information about applying for other financial aid for college through FAFSA and Dream Act. This is so you can
help prepare your children to begin a higher education and obtain an Associate
or Bachelor’s degree.
Stanislaus Futures Scholarship ● Applicant must be a graduating senior
from one of the following High Schools in Stanislaus County: Central Valley High, Ceres High, Johansen High, Patterson High, Riverbank High, Turlock High, and Waterford High
● Applicant must complete the FAFSA and demonstrate financial need as determined by federal guidelines.
● Applicant must plan to enroll full-time at an accredited or qualified post-secondary school pursuing an Associates or Bachelor’s degree.
●Priority will be given to students who are the first in their family to attend college!!!
● Deadline to apply to our 2017 Scholarships is March 2nd.
● Annual award amounts will range from $1,000 to $3,000 depending on need.

The eleven parish elementary schools and two high schools in our Diocese will join with hundreds of Catholic Schools across the United States in observing National Catholic Schools Week. It begins the last
Sunday in January and runs all week, January 29 - February 6, 2017.

EL RESTO ELEGIDO Sofonías es uno de los profetas menos
conocidos del Antiguo Testamento. Hoy habla en la primera lectura sobre el juicio inminente. Pero el Señor dejará un “resto” en Israel. Esta imagen de un resto, de lo que quedará, será vital para judíos y cristianos.
La carta de Pablo a los corintios evidencia su profunda preocupación por los cristianos de allí. Están muy confiados, dice, muy seguros de sí mismos. Los insta a recordar que Cristo les ha dado todo lo que tienen.
El Evangelio de hoy incluye el comienzo del “Gran Sermón” de Jesús. Así como Dios le dio a Moisés la Ley en el Sinaí, ahora Jesús reúne a sus discípulos en un monte para enseñarles la nueva Ley. Cada una de estas Bienaventuranzas contrasta la humillación del presente con la gloria del futuro. La pobreza frente a las riquezas del Reino de Dios, el hambre de Dios frente a la satisfacción en el Espíritu, la persecución frente al Reino de Dios. la humanidad. Por todos los cristianos, para que, fieles a las enseñanzas del Señor, aporten con la oración y la caridad fraterna, a reestablecer la plena comunión eclesial, colaborando para responder a los desafíos actuales de la humanidad.
LA CAPILLA DEL SANTISIMO SACRAMENTO La capilla estará serrada el martes 31 de enero y el miércoles 1 de febrero. Se estará trabajando en el piso de la capilla. Gracias por su comprensión. MISA DE UNCIÓN DE LOS ENFERMOS No abra misa de Unción de los enfermos este viernes 3 de febrero del 2017 por razón de la Misa de Bendición de la Garganta. BENDICION DE LA GARGANTA Todos están invitados a la bendición de la garganta, será el viernes, 3 de febrero, después de la Misa de 8:00 a.m.. San Blás era médico de profesión y fue martirizado durante la persecución de Diocleciano. Cuenta la tradición que de camino al martirio, sano a un niño que tenía una espina en la garganta, desde entonces se le reconoce como patrón de los enfermos de la garganta.
