Situation: In 2009, Drs. Tiffani Bailey Lash and Tashni Dubroy launched a new multi-cultural hair line, Tea and Honey Blends to compete with the ever changing ethnic-beauty market. Inspired by their work in the laboratory as full-time chemists, the duo created products that were made with non-harmful ingredients that encouraged optimal hair health. THB’s main revenue is sold mostly online on their site, www.teaandhoneyblends.com with three independently-owned salons in North Carolina exclusively carrying the 7-piece system as well. The problem with launching a line was the apprehension from consumers unwilling to buy a product not associated with a major corporation. Historically, women are eager to try new products but are “brand loyal” to certain favorites. Strategy: In order for the line to gain as much awareness as possible, a rigorous marketing plan was enacted to engage Tea and Honey Blends’ target audience in a unique fashion. Using a triple method of placement on social media networks and blogs, creating a virtual press kit to gain news coverage, and “get to the people” by attending women-focused events where they can attract potential new and repeat users. Result: The recipe worked and in just a few short weeks with media placements and traffic to the site soaring, Tea and Honey Blends’ name has begun to make an impact in the hair industry. Revenue has soared 30% in the last six months of this year and expansion opportunities are on the horizon to be sold in regional retail markets in 2011.

About Us

Tashni- Ann Dubroy, PhD Co-Founder

Tiffani Bailey Lash, PhD Co-Founder

Tea and Honey Blends was cofounded by Dr. Tiffani Bailey Lash and

Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy. As young women of color engaged in

Chemistry, they decided to utilize their knowledge of innovations in

science to provide a unique hair care product line designed to suit the

needs of hair tresses with varying textures in the ethnic market.

Both founders are committed to encouraging young women to

pursue careers in science. Dr. Tiffani Bailey Lash's interest in the hair

care industry was aroused in her teenage years. When faced with the

decision of choosing a major in college, she opted for Chemistry to

learn more about cosmetic science. Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy, a native of

Jamaica, had a natural tendency towards concocting chemical

formulations. With a mother who styled hair she was surrounded by

the hair industry at an early age. The two met while pursuing their

doctoral degrees at North Carolina State University and realized they

had a common vision: to formulate a line of products that would

enhance the natural beauty of ethnic hair, without the need for harsh

chemicals.

After years of formulating the right blend of natural ingredients, the

ladies have developed a product line that truly promotes healthy hair

and have received acknowledgment from stylists and their clientele. In

2009, they took their vision to the consumer market and now Tea and

Honey Blends is the fruit of their labor.

The Hair Catalyst System

The Tea and Honey Blends Hair Catalyst System is a three part system. Tea and Honey Blends Stimulating Shampoo is used in step one to cleanse hair of oil build up. We have combined the antiseptic properties of tea tree and the soothing smell of peppermint to create a shampoo that is unmet in its quality. Tea and Honey Blends Nourishing Conditioner is used in the second step to add moisture and soften the hair. The third step in the Hair Catalyst System is the Silk Protein Leave-In Conditioner to lock in moisture.

Special “Teas”

Tea and Honey Blends Gleam is a lightweight, non-oily formula that helps repair split ends and eliminate frizz. It produces a luminous, silky, brilliant finish without buildup. Tea and Honey Blends Gleam smoothes and leaves hair glossy with special blends of silicones and a sunscreen to help protect from UV and environmental damage. Our Gleam Serum is perfect for natural; color treated, permed, or relaxed hair. Tea and Honey Blends Sparkle is a lightweight, high shine spray that infuses dull hair with a light reflecting gloss. Our special mixture of silicones acts as a shield that prevents heat, humidity and other environmental factors from affecting your hair. Just apply Tea and Honey Sparkle Mist lightly to hair before encountering humid environments.

Testimonials Crishawn A. - chemically untreated hair I have been using Gleam regularly and I really like it. I actually used it last night. It keeps my hair shinier and my hair has not frizzed (even during my work out). Shani S. - chemically untreated hair I have used the Curl Definer twice after conditioning my hair and before I cornrow. I like that it is not as greasy as other products. I have not used it as a daily product yet. I place Gleam on the ends of my hair in the morning. I have noticed that I don't have as many tangles when I take my hair down. Melanie E. - chemically untreated hair My hair is naturally coarse and very curly; I was quite amazed with the results after using the shampoo and conditioner. While washing, this product blend added moisture and detangled my natural hair. I am very pleased with this product! Melinda V. - chemically treated hair Tea and Honey Blends has been the best product for my type of hair! The first time I used the products, I immediately noticed a difference. THB made my hair feel light, non-greasy, and strong! I was surprised to notice that the shampoo detangled my hair. I can comb through my wet, shampooed hair, with scant residual hair in my comb and only needed a quarter-size drop to bring my hair to a full cleansing lather. Additionally, the conditioner made my hair feel like silk! After using THB and straighten my hair, my hair looks light, free-flowing, and shiny, just like when the Dominicans [Salons] do my hair, but of course, for a fraction of the price. I get my dollars worth every time; this has definitely been a great investment! Tea and Honey Blends is the next best thing!!!

Tea and Honey Blends takes on Paul Mitchell’s design squad with tea tree hair products manufactured and produced by African American women

Tea and Honey Blends is a new line of premium hair care products, made from natural extracts, that leaves hair smelling and looking beautiful. Tea and Honey Blends takes on Paul Mitchell’s design squad with tea tree hair products manufactured and produced by African American women Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy and Dr. Tiffani Bailey Lash created the line for multicultural hair of varying textures, but they’re not competing with the usual suspects. “People are asking us if our competitors are Carol’s Daughter or Miss Jessie’s. No. We’re looking at Paul Mitchell. We’re pursuing product manufacturing and cosmetology education,” Lash says. The THB founders, who met while pursuing chemistry PhDs at North Carolina State University, were unsatisfied with the hair products that were on the market, in particular, those marketed to women of color. Several commercial shampoos do an excellent job cleansing the hair and scalp, but strip moisture from the follicles. “We were able to tap into that and create a product that locks in moisture and still has the antimicrobial effects of Tea Tree,” Dubroy explains. Tea and Honey Blends delivers this experience through a three-step Hair Catalyst System: The Tea Tree Stimulating Shampoo thoroughly cleanses hair. The Tea Tree Nourishing Conditioner moistens and softens tresses; and the Silk Protein Leave-In Conditioner locks in moisture. Stylists recognize Tea and Honey Blends as a premium product because it shares the Tea Tree component with many successful products, yet stands out by adding moisture. The THB Catalyst System is only a segment of the healthy hair products produced by this exciting upstart. The line includes styling aids and a collection of products for chemically treated and untreated hair. The line can be purchased at select salons and on-line at www.teaandhoneyblends.com Learn more at www.teaandhoneyblends.com

Situation: Howard University’s Career Service Office has always been a great resource for undergraduate and graduate students to find employment upon graduation, but many students did not know that the office located in the School of Communications was for all students to use. After rebranding itself as the Center for Career Education, Development and Research a few years ago, I wanted to give back to my alma mater by creating a program to educate students on life after college and the many job opportunities that are out there despite the shaky economy. Strategy: In early 2010, I contacted the Assistance Director of Employee Relations, Mr. Bernard Moon to pitch him the idea of a panel discussion on creative careers featuring Howard University Alumni. He approved the concept and I was in charge of planning the program slated for a fall 2010 date. From content design to contacting and choosing speakers from a diverse audience and creating the brochure for advertising I was there every step of the way to make sure the event was a success. Result: After six months of planning and a surprise sponsorship from the office of alumni relations, on September 30, 2010 5 panelists convened to talk about the many different career options available upon graduation. Students were very eager; asking many thought-provoking questions while gaining insight to the tough but great road ahead.

Situation: In 2009, I created the monthly e-zine, Style & Substance, to spotlight up-and coming creative in all disciplines. It started off as a labor of love and quickly turned into a group effort when I added journalism students from colleges throughout the U.S. and Canada to contribute lifestyle stories as well. Online media has become saturated with an array of celebrity and gossip-centric sites, yet there are not many available that focus on the rise to success instead of the destination. Strategy: Daily, I would scour the internet and magazines for burgeoning talents in a creative fields and corporate America. To date I have interviewed, fashion designers, MTV’s first Twitter VJ, photographers, musicians and scientists to name a few. Result: After helming the reigns of this site for two years, I was asked to attend Essence Magazine’s Annual Women’s Conference to cover the event in November 2010. It was an honor and a privilege to be in the company of so many successful and inspiring women that have created a brand or a needed product. In early 2011, I will revamp the message and content of the site to focus on uplifting young women of color to reach their goals in, health, career, finance, love and life!
