This 100th Anniversary year has been an exciting year, both in celebrating our history and planning for our future. One theme that has resounded all year long is: giving from the community has always been a constant thread in the fabric of Beebe Healthcare.

Today, with the need to expand to serve our growing community and continue to be the state-of-the-art healthcare center in Sussex County, philanthropy continues to be the answer to fund innovation, to build and renovate top quality facilities, to purchase capital equipment, as well as to retain and attract the best physicians, nurses, and team members.

In 1916, the Beebe brothers, Drs. James and Richard, were the hands that healed but also were the first hands that built Beebe—literally with sand from Lewes Beach! In 1921, the first benevolent gift-givers, Benjamin and Helen Shaw, gave a generous gift to expand Beebe from a three-bed hospital to 35-bed facility and, in 1927, donated another wing to increase beds to 60 in memory of their daughter Natalie Townsend Shaw. We continue to be grateful for their generosity and so many others who have followed their lead and strong example.

As you know, Beebe has a five-story wing planned for our Lewes campus. We are actively working with architects to design and plan this expansion to support the increased demand for private inpatient rooms. Additional facilities are also needed for electrophysiology and catheterization procedures, as well as a new hybrid lab in the operating room to support the growth of non-invasive vascular procedures, to meet the growing community needs and to have facilities to support Beebe’s expert cardiologists and vascular physicians.

We are your neighbors in the community and easily accessible to you and your families. Beebe Healthcare reaches well beyond Lewes with satellite outpatient facilities in Rehoboth Beach, Milton, Long Neck, Georgetown, Milford, Millsboro, and Millville. Beebe will continue to expand outpatient care near you and is exploring adding an emergency facility in the South Coastal area. Also, our Tunnell Cancer Center is in need of an expansion to accommodate additional oncologists and to support our patients.

As in the past, philanthropy will be needed to make these projects a reality. These projects will not only transform the facilities but will continue to transform how we deliver healthcare for our families and future generations.

Thank you for your continued generosity and your investment in Beebe.

sincerely,Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE President and CEO, Beebe Healthcare

F O U N D E D I N 1 9 1 6 , Beebe Healthcare continues to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2016. To mark this significant milestone, we created a leadership giving club—the 1916 Club. Members of the club donate $1,916 or more each year to the Annual Fund and receive invitations to special events. In 2016, there were 174 members generously contributing more than $387,000 annually.

Our goal is to continue to grow the 1916 Club in the years ahead, building a dedicated group of strong supporters of Beebe Healthcare for the next 100 years! Excellent patient care is only possible with your generous support. We invite you to join this leadership society by donating a gift of $1,916 or more to the Annual Fund . Thank you for supporting your local, non-profit, community healthcare system!

[ letter O F gratitude ]

dear F R I E N D S O F B E E B E M E D I C A L F O U N D AT I O N , Thank you for investing in Beebe Healthcare and for choosing to support your local, non-profit, community healthcare system!

All year long we have been celebrating the centennial of Beebe throughout the county with events, parades, health seminars, book readings, and community activities where we have heard countless people share how much they love Beebe and how proud they are to support Beebe. For 100 years, Beebe has offered excellent care to the residents and visitors of Sussex County, and that is truly a cause for celebration! During these 100 years, countless donors have supported the mission of Beebe and contributed to Beebe’s growth from a three-bed hospital to a modern healthcare system. It truly is a testimony of the strong commitment our community has to Beebe.

You will notice that this year’s Beebe Medical Foundation “Annual Report” has been transformed into a “Gratitude Report.” This new report focuses on donors who share their hearts and stories of why they believe in Beebe and give to Beebe. Through the Celebrate Excellent Care program, many shared with us a personal story about the extraordinary care they received at Beebe. If you would like to share your story, please let us know.

Every gift donated , no matter what the size, is sincerely and greatly appreciated and acknowledged . We are proud that for every dollar we raise, only 12 cents goes to fundraising expenses, and all donations are put to work right here in Sussex County!

Enjoy this new report of gratitude about the generous giving to your local, non-profit, community healthcare system. Thank you to all who have given! And if you have never given to support Beebe, we kindly invite you to consider making a gift today. Please feel free to contact us at (302) 644-2900 or go to www.beebemedicalfoundation.org and donate online today.

“ I D E C I D E D T O have the knee replacement surgery at Beebe because I

was well aware of the national recognition that Beebe’s joint replacement program has received for more than a decade.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Stephani Allison and certified registered nurse anesthetist Maureen Syntax were aware of my anxieties and showed tenderness, compassion, and thoughtfulness, which helped me to relax and not be afraid. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Harriott was there for me, before and after the surgery. Knowing he would always be there to provide excellent care brought me a great sense of peace. You just don’t see this type of care at other hospitals. Every department and every person at Beebe I touched showed exceptional consideration to me, my choices, everything. I found it remarkable. Even the Beebe Home Care physical therapist came out on a Saturday to assess me so I could begin care on Monday. That knocked me out. Everyone made sure that I understood everything, every step of the way.

With this extraordinary, advanced care, I am proud to contribute to Beebe and proudly share my story .”

“ I ’ M A B E E B E B A B Y and I’m proud to have started another generation of Beebe babies by bringing my four beautiful children into this world right here in our hospital in Lewes. Each pregnancy, from prenatal care, ultrasounds, the Expecting Parents class, and the delivery of our children, was a positive experience at Beebe. The staff at the Women’s Health Pavilion was truly exceptional and always went the extra mile to make my husband and me feel comfortable. The nurses took me under their wings, fighting through every contraction and enjoying all the elation in welcoming our new addition. They even went so far as to check on us after their shifts and to introduce us to the next shift’s staff before they left. We couldn’t think of a more positive way to acknowledge them than by making a generous donation to support all of the great work they do in the community.”

Christian and Julie decided to give a wonderful gift to celebrate their four Beebe Babies. Christian recently joined the Beebe Medical Foundation Board .

[ the giving H A N D S society ] Employees give through the Giving Hands Society. New in 2016, the Giving Hands Society provides an opportunity for Beebe Team Members to give back to the Beebe community by making a donation of any amount to the Beebe Medical Foundation Annual Fund. Beebe Team Members donating $100 or more a year receive a commemorative 100th pin and magnet in honor of Beebe Healthcare’s centennial year. Employee giving has increased more than 300% since the society was established.

“ F R O M T H E M O M E N T it was suspected that I had lymphoma, until the day I rang the bell at the end of chemotherapy, everyone at Beebe Healthcare, and more specifically at the Tunnell Cancer Center, felt like old friends. My husband, Murray, was welcomed by the staff and volunteers, and, more importantly, included in my consultations with the doctors and with my treatment procedures. Everyone kept him up to speed every step of the way. As Executive Director of CAMP

REHOBOTH, I have found that Beebe is a great partner with the LGBT community and strongly supports our initiatives and events . We are truly blessed to have an award-winning cancer center in Rehoboth that not only provides excellent clinical care, but true love, inclusion, and compassion.

I am very happy to donate to the Beebe Medical Foundation in honor of my care, knowing well that Beebe needs the strong support of our community so Beebe can continue to meet the community’s growing needs .”

“ O V E R T H E Y E A R S I have had 11 operations at Beebe Healthcare. The first surgery was performed in 2004, and the most recent one in February 2016. In 2006, I was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer and at that time there were only 25 hospitals in the United States that performed operations for this type of cancer. Beebe was one of those hospitals with the surgeries being performed by Dr. James Spellman! I wanted to recognize Dr. Spellman’s work, so I initiated one of the first Celebrating Excellent Care gifts by making donations over a three-year period to assist with obtaining equipment he needed to perform his surgeries more efficiently. I am very grateful for the care I continue to receive at Beebe Healthcare and that I am able to lead an active life! It is my pleasure to give back to a hospital that has given me so much.”

The Beebe Medical Foundation recently welcomed Bob Schnepfe to the Shaw Society. Members of this planned giving society choose to remember Beebe through the establishment of bequests. Bob is also a member of the newly formed Loyalty Society, celebrating donors who have given to the Annual Fund for three consecutive years or more.

“ T H E C A R S H O W A T I N D E P E N D E N C E is one of the premier car shows in the area. In previous years we chose to contribute to a large national charity, but after a discussion about the effectiveness of those donations, we decided to give closer to home and chose Beebe Healthcare’s Tunnell Cancer Center to be our recipient. We believe this donation will more directly benefit our friends and neighbors.”

Third party gifts such as proceeds from the Schell Brothers 4th Annual Car Show at the Independence 55+ Community in Millsboro provide an excellent and fun source of community support for Beebe Healthcare! We are grateful to all businesses and organizations that have designated Beebe as the beneficiary for proceeds from their events.

T H I S Y E A R T H E B E E B E A U X I L I A R Y presented its largest annual gift to Beebe Healthcare. The donation of $311,000 will be used to fund a new Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab at the Medical Center in Lewes, planned for fiscal year 2017.

“Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) treats heart arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats. EP studies most often are recommended for patients with symptoms of heart rhythm disorders. Every patient is a VIP in the cardiac unit and it makes us proud to know that we can provide this service at Beebe so that members of our community do not have to travel for this important medical treatment.”
