Identity and Our Brand

National Louis University has been a leader in professional education for 125 years, innovating to transform individuals and their communities since its illustrious beginning as Elizabeth Harrison’s Training School in 1886. Everywhere I go, I hear examples of how our faculty, our students, and our alumni are positively shaping their professions and communities. We want to do everything we can to reinforce that positive image and introduce NLU to those who have yet to learn about our outstanding institution. The National Louis University graphic identity system—the combination of symbols, colors, and typefaces that constitutes our “look”—plays an important role in reinforcing our messages of access, innovation, and excellence. Consistent and correct use of our name treatment and symbols will communicate that we are one unified university joined in these commitments.

These guidelines cover all approved variations of graphic identity elements, as well as editorial and design specifications, which may be used to represent National Louis University. Please consult the guidelines whenever you are creating any item that represents the university or one of its colleges, campuses, or units. If you have any questions or needs that go beyond these basic tools, staff members in the department of Marketing and Communications can help.

Our Symbol and Seal

Our new graphic identity is anchored by the National Louis University Symbol, com-posed of elements in use at our University since its founding era. The triangle and wreath motifs have evolved from the 19th century when we adopted as a symbol of our mission the wooden play forms and words of the early childhood education pioneer Friedrich Froebel, who exhorted: “Come let us live with our children.” By the early 20th century, our teacher candidates proudly wore the triangle and wreath as graduation pins. And when we entered our contempo-rary era, these symbols were joined with our new name to maintain continuity with our treasured past.

Today’s NLU Symbol includes historic ele-ments modified to reflect a cleaner, more contemporary image and to reproduce more effectively in today’s marketing and communications applications. The Univer-sity’s founding date remains prominent. The Symbol, always used in combination with other elements as described in these guidelines, is the only mark approved for use by campus departments.

The 1990 Seal is reserved for limited use by the President’s Office, primarily on official university documents, such as contracts, deeds, and academic diplomas. It can be used, with authorization, as a design element on certain ceremonial communications, such as formal invitations. All such uses require prior approval from the Department of Marketing and Communications.

The Signature

The NLU Symbol is joined with a distinctive ty-pographic rendering of our name to form our standard signature. The relationships and pro-portions of all the elements in the signature have been carefully crafted for maximum visual impact and ‘readability’. Do not alter any of the compo-nents from the supplied reproduction art.

The only approved variations of the standard sig-nature are show below.

Digital art files for the complete set of signature is available in all of the common document for-mats for use by communication professionals. In-formation for how to obtain any of these files can be found on page 16.

Color Reproduction Standards

The NLU signature is typically reproduced in ‘NLU Blue’ and ‘NLU Grey.’ Specific pro-duction limitations may require the use of a single-color version. Color specifications are built in to the supplied reproduction art to assure consistent results. Do not alter or edit color designations in individual art files.

Typography

Default (Windows/Mac)With the goal of creating more visually distinctive communications, a new palette of typographic options has been devel-oped for communications designers. This complementary set of faces consists of a primary font family, a secondary family, and a default family.

The default set of typefaces has been se-lected for common ‘desktop’ communica-tions where Windows-Macintosh cross-plat-form compatibility is a priority.

All users should be aware that fonts are pur-chased as licenses for individual computers and that distributing fonts to other users is unlawful. For more information on the avail-ability, distribution and licensing of the NLU font sets, please contact the Depart-ment of Marketing and Communications.

125th Anniversary Identity

In recognition of National Louis University’s 125th anniversary year, we have developed a unique anniversary logo for use on select-ed NLU public communications. This logo supplements but does not replace the stan-dard NLU graphic identity elements.

Several application examples of the anni-versary logo are shown on page 15.

The NLU anniversary logo has been de-signed to reproduce in NLU’s primary colors of NLU BLUE and NLU GREY. Variations are also available specified for 4-color process and digital applications.

Unlike the standard NLU signature, the an-niversary logo is a secondary and temporary identity element. As such some creative flexibility is allowed in reproduction and ap-plication, such as use of silver foil-stamping in place of the NLU GREY, or embossing and debossing techniques in special initia-tive communications such as invitations. Consult with NLU’s Department of Market-ing and Communications when considering any special-case options.

Do not alter any of the components of the 125th logo without approval from the Depart-ment of Marketing and Communications.

The NLU 125th Anniversary Logo is a secondary identity element and should not be emphasized over the standard NLU identity signature. Allow generous space between the 125th Logo and the primary NLU brand Identity. In most cases, adequate separation of identity elements can be achieved by applying the 125th Logo as a footer. Applica-tion of the anniversary year logo requires approval of the Department of Marketing and Communications.

Editorial Guidelines

Name

Use the full name, “National Louis University,” when first referring to the University in text. Subsequent references in text can be either “National Louis” or “NLU.” Please note that the official name of the University no longer contains the dash between “National” and Louis.” Do not refer to the University or the National College of Education as “National.”

Style

NLU follows Associated Press (AP) style in all publications and web projects.

Degrees

Always refer to an NLU degree with its full official catalog title.

For example:

“Bachelor of Science in Management” or“B.S. in Management”NOT “Bachelor’s in Management”

When calling a degree a generic name it should be a lower case degree in posses-sive form.

For example:

“bachelor’s degree in management”NOT “bachelor’s in Management”

“Sara has an associate degree.”NOT “Sara has an associate’s degree.”

Degree name credentials are not used for any listings other than doctoral level recipi-ents. The term “Dr.” is not used in publica-tions unless the doctor is a medical doctor. In a listing of peers, when medical doctors are mixed with Ed.D. and Ph.D. owners, the medical doctor will be listed as “MD.”

For example:

“Joe H. Smith, Ed.D.”NOT “Dr. Joe H. Smith”

• Use one space after a period “Enroll now. Begin Classes today.” NOT double space

• Do Enroll use a space before or after an “em” dash. For example: “ Today was rough—20 students were out sick.”

Use of State Abbreviations

Use the U.S. postal regulation for the abbreviation of a state.

For example:

For Illinois: use “IL” not “Ill.”

Use Consistency in Abbreviating in location names

Always apply consistency in the abbreviation of location names.

For example:

For NLU’s Chicago campus:“122 South Michigan AvenueChicago, Illinois 60603”or“122 S. Michigan Ave.Chicago, IL 60603”

Phone Number Usage

Use periods to separate the digits of a phone number.

For example:

“888.nlu.today” or “800.443.5522”NOT “888-nlu-today” or “(800)443-5522”

Times and Dates

Use the day of the week, and date when listing an event. Times should be shown with lower-case “am” or “pm” without a space af-ter the time shown. Only one “am” or “pm” should appear unless the event begins in the morning and ends in the afternoon.

For example:

“Tuesday, June 1, 2010 from 1-3pm” or“Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 11am-2pm”NOT Tuesday, June 1st from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
