JOINING AIGA

Joining the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) gives you an inside look into the industry and we encourage all of our students to sign up early on. AIGA gives you the benefit of being able to network with fellow students and professionals, and also hosts an array of free lectures and seminars for members. In addition, the UMSL AIGA chapter takes a yearly trip to Chicago and student members generally have more opportunities to meet prospective employers.

DESIGNER LECTURES

Every year, UMSL design faculty arranges a multitude of lectures in which designers from around the country visit with students and are able to talk about what they do— how they got the big job and tips for the real world. In addition to these lectures, students and faculty create a range of posters specifically for each event. These lectures allow an opportunity for students to get involved with their department well as a chance to talk one-on-one with professionals.

In addition to the UMSL AIGA trip, design students also have the opportunity to apply for a selective program that allows them to visit New York or Los Angeles and experience first-hand high profile design firms and studios. Students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and submit an application in order to be accepted into the program.

DESIGN BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT

DESIGN BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT

All students want to know, "Realistically, what can I do and where can I go once I graduate?" Truth be told, we have graduates all across the country— working in New York to attending graduate school in California. Here's just a sampling of where they are now:

PORTFOLIO REVIEW

DURING THE SOPHOMORE AND JUNIOR YEARS OF THE GRAPHIC DESIGN PROGRAM, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PASS A PORTFOLIO REVIEW IN ORDER TO CONTINUE ONTO THEIR SENIOR YEAR.

WHAT IS DUE? Sophomore Year: 4 projects (including a mini-thesis from GD IV)Junior Year: 6 projects (3 from AP2 course, the other 3 TBD – as your best work from other classes)

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION: All sections of Advanced Problems in Graphic Design 2 will include a comprehensive portfolio review as an entrance requirement for Senior Seminar. The portfolio review is a standard, required process for credible design departments throughout the United States. Instituting portfolio review is a valuable tool to strengthen your work— to help you be competitive with other candidates for the job market. We support your growth and have your best interest in mind.
