With all my heart, I believe that living a life of gospel faith brings freedom, joy and purpose. Thats something everyone around us needs, and its something we have to offer here at Yorba Linda Presbyterian Church. So let me see you dance! With you in ministry, Pastor Lynn.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” John 10:27-28

My sister is getting ready for a big presentation at work on leadership, and she’s using a YouTube video called “How to Start a Movement.” It’s a three minute clip of a guy dancing at an outdoor concert. He is anything but cool: he flails around exuberantly, waving his hands, rocking his hips back and forth, now and then lurching into an awkward flip. But he’s absolutely free and totally joyful; he’s got the spirit of the music, and it turns out to be contagious. After a while, another dancer joins him and he is welcomed as an equal. That second dancer waves an invitation to his friends to join them, and they do. Then a few more, and within three minutes a whole crowd has formed, jubilantly dancing together.

The narrator draws an interesting conclusion from this three minute study in starting a movement. First, leadership is over-glorified. It was the first follower who made it all happen. Second, he draws attention to the way the first follower was welcomed. He was an equal, free to follow and free to add his own improvisations. He says this: “If you really want to start a movement, then have the courage to follow, and to show others how to follow. And if you see a ‘lone nut’ doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.”

You and I are not followers of a ‘lone nut’ at an outdoor music festival. We are part of a movement that began over two thousand years ago. We are followers of Jesus Christ, God’s son, who came to bring eternal life for all who will believe in him. But perhaps we have underestimated the influence that joyful, exuberant followers can have on those around them. Over and over again in the scriptures, God’s people are called to be strong and courageous. Christ invites us to be bold in the ways that we follow his word. So invite others into the dance. As they join us, welcome them as equals, giving them the freedom to improvise as they serve Christ. When you see someone doing something great, join in. With all my heart, I believe that living a life of gospel faith brings freedom, joy and purpose. That’s something everyone around us needs, and it’s something we have to offer here at Yorba Linda Presbyterian Church. So let me see you dance! With you in ministry, Pastor Lynn.

October is Mission Month

If we do our job right, it will be hard for you to miss that October is Mission Month at YLPC. I am moving into my new responsibility as Elder for Mission just as the committee moves from its usual busy to turbocharged! I am deeply impressed by all the work the members of the Mission Committee are involved in, and even more in awe of their passion and commitment. I find it notable that while the members are actively involved in Hot Meals, HIS Picnic, Habitat for Humanity, Yorba Linda Food for Families, Blood Drives, Blessing Bags, and Interfaith Council (and I’m sure I left something out!) they are far from burned out. They are, in fact, burning with purpose to serve those in need. Each is finding their own way to serve and new ideas are bubbling up daily (just take a look at my overflowing inbox)!

While the dictionary defines “mission” in a religious sense as an action involving good works, travel to foreign lands and evangelism, it also notes that a mission can be defined as an important assignment or task. The former concept is intimidating and not for everyone. But I believe we can all find our own mission, and that the Mission Committee can help those looking for an opportunity to serve to find their own passion and niche. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for each of us to emerge from Mission Month with a new sense of the variety of service opportunities that are available to us right in our own backyard?

Thank you, Roxanne Ford

Children’s Ministry

Emmaus Road Sunday School

In September, children began a three part series on the story of the life of Moses. The first week we focused on the birth and life of Moses through his time as a shepherd in Midian found in Exodus 2 and 3. In the Imagination Station, children created edible Moses basket treats while learning about Moses' journey down the Nile. In the Interpretation Station, children listened, sang, and moved to several songs, which tell the story of Moses. In the Information Station, children played a life-sized board game to review the events in the life of Moses. The story of Moses is #'s 45-48 in The Children’s Bible in 365 Stories.

Spiritual Practice: Hearing God's Call

The Bible is full of examples of God speaking to his people in dramatic ways – burning bushes, dreams and visions, angel visitations, in clouds of smoke and pillars of fire. How do we hear God’s call today? How do we listen for God’s word in our own lives? Help your children understand that God is with us today, just as he was for Moses. He still speaks today! God’s voice is heard in many different ways:

1. Bible 2. Preaching 3. Worship 4. Hymns, music in worship 5. Sunday school/Bible study In the next few weeks, identify the ways God is speaking to your family. Will you answer His call?

World Communion Sunday

On Sunday, October 1, children will remain in Worship for the entire service for World Communion.

Youth Ministries

Our youth ministry kicked off this fall by revisiting summer with an afternoon at the beach. It was great to have families slow down and have fun together. We all had a great time and are looking forward to more fun days together. Our youth ministry is growing and changing and with that we are trying some new things. This year, our program will look a little bit different. Students will still be provided with time to grow in their faith, serve in his name, and have fun together. We will continue our current Sunday School schedule where students engage in Bible study and fellowship. We will also continue to have special events for students to get together and celebrate life.

A key component of our new structure is bringing families together to do church together in new and exciting ways. We will also be taking the Jr. High and High School students to camp on the same weekend this Winter. They will be housed in separate cabins but will enjoy mealtime and programming together. If you missed our fall parent meeting and would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact Michelle Almeida at [email protected].

I am so excited to see what this year has in store for our youth group! Please see below for upcoming events.
