Grant County, Wisconsin, offersso much in the way of scenic drivetime that you could be a residentand never finish discoveringdelightful new paths to its innerbeauty.

Our northern boundary ismarked by the dark and ever-changing Wisconsin River. StateHighway 133 and County HighwayC wind alongside its undevelopedpublic lands. Camping is allowedon state-owned islands andshores. The lower Wisconsin Riverprovides explorers miles ofsecluded backwaters, islandsand sandy beaches to discover.

To our west is the legendaryMississippi River. Several stateand county highways take youto many boat landings and toopportunities for hiking, camp-ing and wildlife observation. The bluffs that line our rivers andstreams are adorned with a variety of tree, plantand flower species.

Don’t forget the abundant wildlife. Deer areespecially evident during early morning andearly evening times – so proceed with caution.

The Great River Road winds through 60 milesof beautiful Grant County and its riverside com-munities. Stop to stretch your legs at either ofour famous state parks – Nelson Dewey orWyalusing - both of which feature trails, rest-room facilities, camping and picnic areas foryour enjoyment.

Our unglaciated and pastoral landscapes can beinvestigated more closelyby state-designated RusticRoads. Some in Grant Countyinclude Scenic, Sleepy HollowRoads and Liberty RidgeRoad. The Irish Ridge Roadbetween Potosi and Cassvillewill also fill you with beauti-ful views that won’t easilybe erased from your memory.

Love rural life? If youdon’t mind sharing the roadsduring planting and harvestseasons with tractors andhorse-drawn buggies, you’vecome to the right place! It’s well worth your patienceto view the patchwork offields, hardwood stands andstreams that earmark ourgreat county.

The brick buildings of ourrural communities are a desti-

nation in themselves. Stop and say “hello,”whether you are staying in or passing throughGrant County. We’re sure the qualities that givethe Midwest its good name will be evident in thepeople you meet.

Grant County’s history is evident everywhereyou go. Old churches and farms, cemeteries, breweries, one-room school houses and minesdot our landscape as monuments to our found-ing fathers. Museums adorn many of our towns, with stories of “days gone by” ready to be told toevery willing ear.

Experience RuralWisconsin Life In 1900

At StonefieldHistoric Site

Nelson Dewey, Wisconsin’s first governor farmed this land. Hehad high hopes for this pastoral stretch of land nestledbetween the Mississippi River and the spectacular limestonebluffs that tower above it. He called his beloved riverside agri-cultural estate Stonefield. While his farming enterprise fadedinto history, the name he gave it lives on at a historic site thatpays homage to Dewey and the history of agriculture inWisconsin.

Return to Stonefield’s historic roots on a guided tour ofGovernor Nelson Dewey’s home site, offering a sweeping vistaoverlooking a re-created 1900 rural farming village beside theMississippi River.

Visit a 1900 farmstead and stroll quiet village streets linedwith thirty historic shops and businesses. Explore the StateAgricultural Museum, which tells the story of Wisconsin’sagriculture from before farm mechanization, through the riseand fall of wheat farming and the advent of the dairy indus-try, and into the 20th century. See Wisconsin’s largest collec-tion of historic farm implements ranging from incrediblydetailed miniature McCormick patent models to full-size trac-tors, reapers and threshing machines. The museum’s exten-sive exhibits include an Allis-Chalmers Model U tractor, thefirst rubber tire tractor produced, and the 1896 McCormickAuto-mower, the oldest existing tractor in North America.

Step inside Governor Dewey’s historic 1870 stone barn andperuse the museum shop’s full line of books, note cards, candies, arts-and-crafts items and other souvenirs harkingback to Wisconsin’s agricultural heyday.

Stonefield is one of the newest Great River Road InterpretiveCenters and features a new exhibit, “River Connections,’which tells the story of the site’s connections to theMississippi River.
