aniaorullPresident, Trek Travel

t is hard to believe we are coming up on our 10th year in business here at Trek Travel. When we first started in 2002, we were inspired by our passion for cycling and travel. We love riding our bikes and living the good life and we want to share it with the world. We felt then, and still do today, that there is no better way to connect to a region than from the seat of a Trek bike.

I would personally like to thank all those who have traveled with us, and welcome those of you who are considering joining one of our trips of a lifetime. To do so, we are dedicating the 2012 season to celebrating our 10-year anniversary and love of cycling around the world. Read through our Anniversary Page to find out about exciting events like our Trek Travel anniversary parties, contests and giveaways, special President’s Trips, as well as Special Edition Anniversary vacations to Tuscany, California Wine Country, Provence and the Tour de France. In celebration of our past, we are bringing back some of our classics like San Juan Islands and Ireland. Looking to the future, we are unveiling new trips like North Carolina, and our extremely economical Ride Camps. With all of this, 2012 is shaping up to be Trek Travel’s best year yet!

Trek Travel’s “best year yet” wouldn’t be complete without our brilliant and engaging guides and staff, who I would also like to thank for their dedication, passion and “fun and flexible” philosophy over the years. Since we opened for business, these amazing people, combined with our unique destinations, have made each and every one of our trips the vacation of a lifetime.

Now, I invite you to turn the page and enjoy our exceptional trips for 2012 as you ponder what magical destination Trek Travel can take you to.

If you have any questions or suggestions I’d love to hear from you, so please feel free to send me an email at [email protected].

Cheers!

Jon Salmon“Every chance I get, I travel with Trek Travel because it

gives me exactly what I want from a vacation! I want to

ride, but without the hassles of traveling with a bike. I want to stay in great places and eat great food, but I don’t

want to become a travel agent. I want to immerse myself in

the location, but I don’t want to ask directions. Trek Travel

lets me experience the trip, and they take care of all the

logistics that I don’t want to deal with.”

Custom, Private and Group trips with Trek TravelCustom, Private or Group trips are as easy as lounging on the beaches of Mallorca. Gather

your group, pick a destination, choo se a date and leave the rest to us. When Jon Salmon came

to us looking for a private trip that balanced riding and relaxing, we sent them to California

Wine Country. They had such a great time that they went again the following year. Since then

they’ve travelled with us to the San Juan Islands, then to Provence and now to the Costa Brava.

Whether you crave a group trip to the California Wine Country, a custom trip

designed just for your group along the beaches of Normandy, or a private trip with your crew

to conquer the Classic Climbs of the Alps, just give us a call and we’ll take it from there. California Win

“While walking toward the cloister that had the famous frescoes of St. Benedict at Monte Oliveto Maggiore, in a lower courtyard I saw an elderly, small-statured man struggling with a ladder; I had no idea how he was going to lift it up against a

wall. I opened a gate and offered assistance. He didn’t speak much English and I sure don’t speak either Latin or Italian. Using the international pointing language, we succeeded in trimming an overgrown vine and picking up the debris. When we finished, he pointed at himself and said, ‘Father’ and I pointed at myself and said, ‘Presbyterian.’ He smiled and I left to have lunch with the Trek group. I never mentioned the experience except to my wife, but it was definitely a highlight of the trip. The week was

one of the highlights of my life. Riding up the hills of Tuscany continually reminded me how lucky and blessed I am.” — John

Costa Brava has rich contrasts represented in the art of Salvador Dali and the ancient archeological sites of the Iberian Peninsula.

Penny Gatward from the beginning For me, Costa Brava is a region remarkable for its rich

contrasts—Ancient but Modern, Vibrant but Calm, Proud and

yet Welcoming—evocative combinations instantly familiar and yet full

of unexpected twists! From the wooded green hills and steep cliffs

to the tranquil blue depths of the Mediterranean, this “wild coast,”

boasts areas of outstanding natural beauty and diversity—by turns

enchanting, challenging and serene.

And as for the riding… it is truly enchanting! No wonder this area has long been a cyclist’s

paradise—sweeping along the rise and fall of the hills, the shaded climbs and winding descents

trace ridges and valley roads to the sea past myriad fields, vineyards and Medieval towns and

castles… If the rides don’t take your breath way–the scenery certainly will!

Whenever I guide this trip, I am always reminded of why I love guiding—the pleasure of

experiencing wonderful sights and sounds, the joy of sharing precious moments and watching

as acquaintances become firm friends.

Whether you are an a rider keen on pitting yourself along the routes of the pros,

meandering through ancient villages; a spirit who favors discovering new places and

cultures; or something somewhere in between I heartily recommend the Costa Brava as

destination which has everything which is why I live there!

Jake Young from the beginning My favorite part about guiding in Mallorca is

the stunning views that accompany every ride,

whether an open field of sheep or the wide open

Mediterranean Ocean crashing against the cliffs.

Oh, and the paella. Our Luxury Mallorca trip

is suited for every level of rider, including those

who want to challenge themselves. If you want to push things a bit more, we now offer

Ride Camps, and also an über version of our Luxury trip called the Classic Climbs

of Mallorca. Our trip picks up in the biggest city on the island, Palma, and takes you

immediately into the heartland. You get to experience the luxury, country charm of the

inner island, and then work your way to the coast, staying on or near the beach, and

experiencing the best in food and culture along the way. Be prepared for some of the

most stunning views you have ever seen.

Past trip guests who have travelled to Mallorca agree with me 100% that this is

a hidden gem, and it easily bested everyone's expectations. The Europeans

discovered Mallorca long ago, and it is time for North Americans to see what

all the hype is about.

Since we started in 2002, our goal has been to exceed guest expectations. But, in 2004 when we flew 300 Tour de France Trek Travel

guests off the top of Alpe d’Huez by helicopter to savor the birds-eye mountain view of half a million people slowly inching down the

21 switchbacks by bus we wowed you! Since then exceeding simply isn’t enough…we like to wow you!

It is such an intrinsic part of our culture, we award a prize to the guide who had the best Wow of the year.

When Chateau Belleroy, owned by

the Forbes family, was closed to the

One of our guests on a Custom Costa

Brava trip mentioned she always wanted

to learn to Flamenco. Our guides

Renee and Philippe organized a surprise

Flamenco performance and lesson on

the final night of the trip.

Two of our guests decided to spontaneously

extend their trip and tie the knot. Super

guide Jake became super wedding planner.

Plane tickets were changed. Wedding

arrangements for a ceremony at

Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio were made

and Jake even witnessed their special day!

Guests marveled at the Tuscan

guide, Jeff, who organized an

impromptu helicopter ride on

our Luxury Tuscany trip.

On a Custom Bordeaux Wine trip,

we took it to a historic level

and had three of our wine

aficionado guests inducted as honorary

members of the St. Emilion Jurade,

an ancient brotherhood of

wine dating back to 1199.

Guests on our Tour de France trip

were wowed when they crossed the

“This was my first road cycling adventure. I have been an indoor ‘spinner’ for several years. My biggest concern was that I would be holding others up during the ride. You do stress in your brochures

that everyone can ride at their own pace and this was so true! I was surprised with my own capacity and actually did quite well.”

“I think that the guides set the tone of the trip with the very first picnic. Everything was consistently high-caliber after that. My favorite was the ‘social hour’ prior to meals.

Always surprisingly classy and fun to meet other guests after daily rides.”

Shannon Armstrong from the beginning Santa Barbara is a stunning place to ride and relax on so many

levels and one of my favorite places to guide. The warm weather,

sun filled days, awesome riding and luxurious accommodations have

coerced me back year after year. Our trip starts in the beautiful wine

and ranch country of Santa Ynez Valley. Surrounded by coastal

mountains, this area offers quiet, undulating country roads

perfect for riding.

It's a perfect place to ride whether you are a beginner or an expert. After a few days in the northern

region of Santa Ynez, we head down to sunny Santa Barbara. This vibrant city located on the

Pacific coast has often been called the American Riviera. Sun-drenched days and coastal rides are

paramount. All of these great days of riding are topped only by what many guests come to the area

for—exquisite Central Coast Pinot Noir wines, decadent meals, luxurious hotels and fun nightlife.

We often finish our days with great food and wine while chatting about our day’s fun adventures.

Many guests love walking around the numerous boutiques and shops of State Street or diverging into

an 18th Century Spanish Mission. To finish off our day we stay at two of the regions best hotels.

Offering spa services and unbelievable customer service, more than a few of our past guests have

skipped the day’s ride to get some well-earned R&R.

“TT’s ‘Cycling Vacations of a Lifetime’ catchphrase could at best be

cliché and at worst pompously wrong.....but with your involvement

researching, designing and running trips, the experiences are indeed

memorable for a lifetime. TT guides can both lube a bike chain and

recommend a precocious cabernet, but it's more than just skills, it's a

cheery attitude and personality and you ooze both.” —John Groton

y Guiding PhilosophyWe live in an age where we work long hours, commute through ridiculous traffic and go, go, go. When we

finally get time off, we get a few weeks. Time is precious and as a guide, I’m very aware of what an honor it

is to host people on their time off work! Of course I’m there to weave them into this new culture, but more

importantly, my job is to nurture their soul. Early in my career I discovered that the first task is to get guests

out of the work mind and into the cultural mindset of the region. I was guiding in Provence and the Rockies

and when people there ask you “What you do” they are referring to your passions—skiing, climbing, cycling,

etc. So, I started to play a game in which guests were not allowed to reveal or discuss work for 24 hours.

They loved it and what I saw was the beginning of the vacation transformation that I soooo love. People grow

as they embark on a new adventure, and discover or rediscover parts of themselves that were buried under the

stresses of life. Perhaps it is trying to speak French to a local, or riding up Mont Ventoux, or seeing a live

mountain goat for the first time. Giggles abound, eyes sparkle and when their partner turns to me and says,

“I haven’t seen this side of my partner for years!” I know I’ve achieved my goal.
