Clyde’s, Bored Room take top awards

Top businesses in the Boundary were honoured on Thursday night at the Grand Forks Curling Rink for the Community Futures Boundary Business Excellence and Commu-nity Awards for 2015.

The event was MC’d by Jay Alb-las of Community Futures and fea-tured short speeches by both Wen-dy McCulloch, president, and Lyle Burt, chair of the board. There were around 130 people in attendance. Food was supplied by Twisted Forks Catering and served by grads from GFSS.

Also held during the event was the City of Grand Forks volunteer appreciation awards.

Organizer Susan Green, Com-munity Futures business analyst, said the event has been going on since 2000.

“It began as a small event to rec-

ognize Community Future’s clients and has progressively grown to what it is today fostering partner-ships between organizations, busi-nesses, volunteers and employees,” she said. “The event was opened up to all businesses in the Bound-ary area and co-sponsored by the Boundary Country Regional Cham-ber of Commerce five years ago. Two years ago the City of Grand Forks asked that we add their vol-unteer awards to the night.”

Green said the awards night is meant to encourage and recognize the small business community and volunteers without whom our small communities couldn’t exist.

“It’s also a great networking op-portunity for businesses as there is no other event like it. Once a year businesses, volunteers and small organizations get together to cel-ebrate local achievements.”

Voting on the awards were Boundary area residents.

Winning volunteer appreciation awards were: (from left) Derek Taylor, Lesley Matthews representing Ed Matthews, Sheila Dobie, Nancy Gillmor, Dan VonBank, Pam Smith and Peter Stoochnoff. Missing was John Westaway. In the front are city representatives Mayor Frank Konrad and Councillor Christine Thompson. Craig Lindsay photos

EditorialiNSIGHTYOUR NEWS VIEW

It was a pleasure to attend the Busi-ness Excellence and Community Awards last week at the curling rink. Once again, Community Futures and their partners put on a great show. It really is an excel-lent opportunity to mix and mingle with different business owners and others in the community. There were also a num-ber of volunteers honoured by the City of Grand Forks, deserving of the entire com-munity’s appreciation.

Congratulations from the Gazette to all the winners. Our community is very for-tunate to have such great people here and our businesses certainly reflect that.

When someone goes into a store, wheth-er local or tourist, they want to be helped by someone knowledgeable as well as friendly and courteous. We all remember great service we’ve had. We also remem-ber those times when we’ve had service that wasn’t so good. People tend to not return to those stores. Fortunately, in the Boundary great service is the norm.

Congratulations to businesses, volunteers

HOW TO REACH US

Grand Forks is a happening place this fall

After a bit of a fall lull fol-lowing the fires and smoke in August, news and events in Grand Forks and the area are picking up.

Most of the chatter around town and on social media re-cently has been about the fed-eral election. Although it was touted as the longest election in history I really don’t think most people really paid atten-tion until about two weeks ago.

Locally, we can expect to have our own byelection

within a few months. The only question is whether we will be electing one councillor (to replace Michael Wirischagin) or two. The city is hoping to have a decision from the Su-preme Court regarding Julia Butler’s removal soon so if she is removed they would like to have both open council spots on the same byelection. It would be an expensive an-noyance to have to have two byelections.

So what else is going on around town?

Thursday was a busy day with a self-advocacy group’s first ever conference on over-coming barriers. Kudos to the group who came up with the idea and put it together them-selves.

There was the grand open-

ing of the Trails of the North Fork Project at Bluejoint Rec Site, which I didn’t actually attend as our editor went, and finally in the evening there was the Business Excellence Awards. The curling rink was once again packed as nomi-nees and others nibbled on tasty treats and chatted it up.

Serving the treats, which were prepared by Twisted Forks Catering, were mem-bers of the GFSS grad class. The grads will be hosting their spaghetti feed fundrais-er Wednesday at the school. They’re also planning their Christmas craft sale, which goes at the end of November.

That’s right, Christmas events are just around the corner but first we hit Hal-loween.

Besides trick or treating, there are a couple of local events that are always pop-ular. The Freaker’s Ball at Christina Lake on Oct. 30 and the Rotary bonfire at Angus MacDonald Park on Hallow-een (Saturday night) always draw big crowds.

Already sold out is the 24th annual wine tasting event at gallery 2 on Nov. 28. The event is another great so-cial outing for the who’s who of Grand Forks.

When you throw in all the great arts and music events in town such as open mic nights at Happy Days Diner as well as Lisa’s Bistro at the Lake and the Boundary District Arts Council performance series, you’ve got a real hap-pening fall.

Opinion

Letters to the editor Whistleblowers in disdainI first heard about Jessica Ernst almost a decade ago when I saw a short

video showing her flaring a bottle of water from her well. She was demon-strating what had happened to the water supply for her community as a re-sult of heavy hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for methane gas in the region.

As an oil patch environmental con-sultant for three decades, she knows a lot about gas and oil extraction and un-derstands the fracking process that is known as an “unconventional” way of obtaining oil and gas. She claims that throughout her career her objective was always to get operators in the oil and gas industry to do better.

Fracking is a highly controversial process where water, sand and sev-eral unnamed chemicals are pumped under high pressure into shale rock through drill holes. The process breaks the rock and creates channels for natural gas and oil to flow into larger pools that can be easily tapped.

There are a multitude of risks involved where fracking is done including ground and surface water pollution, air and noise pollution, small earth-quakes that trigger bigger ones and public health issues such as respiratory problems.

One need only talk to people in northeastern B.C. or northwestern Al-berta where fracking has been going on for years to learn of its dangers to humans, farm animals and wildlife. Most recently the process had trig-gered small earthquakes in the northeast.

Ernst is a resident of Rosebud, Alberta, a rural community about an hour’s drive northeast of Calgary with a population of 88 people, accord-ing to the 2011 Census.

Ernst is now engaged full-time in the pursuit of justice after the shal-low aquifer that supplied residents of Rosebud became contaminated with methane gas and unknown chemicals as a result of fracking operations in the area by EnCana, a huge international company.

What interests me most about Ernst is the fact that she would blow the whistle on the gas company she worked for as an environmental consultant and the Alberta government because she wanted justice to be done both in Alberta and all other provinces and territories in Canada.

Ernst sought restitution in court for the fouling of her well water and the water of her neighbours. She filed a $33 million suit against the former energy regulatory body for Alberta, Environment Alberta and EnCana.

In court the Alberta government argued that it had no duty of care to landowners with polluted water and that the government had statutory immunity.

An Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench justice ruled that Ernst could not sue the regulatory body because it is immune from private legal claims under Alberta law.

Ernst was not satisfied and took her case to the Supreme Court of Cana-da. Her claim is that the refusal to hear her is a breach of her rights under the Charter of Human Rights. A Toronto law firm is handling Ernst’s lawsuit.

Will Koop, co-coordinator of the B.C. Tapwater alliance, is reported to have stated, “Jessica Ernst has made a strong case. Her collection provides excellent and technically friendly working tools, enabling the public to draw their own conclusions from the critical information. This is not just an invaluable document for North Americas, but for the world.”

After reading several reports about Ernst’s work as a whistleblower I have developed a deep respect for her diligence in pursuing her case. I have also wondered why corporations, politicians and ordinary citizens treat whistleblowers with such contempt when they are performing such an important function in society.

Ernst could have done what hundreds of other people around Alberta have done and signed confidentiality agreements when their water was contaminated, their livestock died, family members became ill, air was pol-luted and grass and trees suffered.

Ernst’s evidence should raise serious concerns about government policy makers and regulatory bodies that dismiss the environmental and human health impacts of hydraulic fracturing. Her case also raises concerns about the power and control that governments have given to big corporations in the gas and oil industries. Her work should be heralded, not dismissed.

Fall fair a success once again

Let’s act to reduce deer numbers

Donation extremely generous

Editor, The Gazette:Well, another Rock Creek

Fair has come and gone, and despite the cool start on Sat-urday morning, the weather cooperated quite nicely for the rest of the weekend, resulting in a very successful fall fair.

I would like to commend the board of directors, volun-

teers, local businesses, service clubs, communities, and ex-hibitors for the great effort you all have put in over the past year to make this fair a huge success.

It is very encouraging to see the number of young people attending work bees and events at the fairgrounds.

Keep it up, for you are the future of the community and this great event.

Once again, a huge “thank you” to all of you, and here’s looking forward to next year’s fair.

Bill Bosovich, President,Rock Creek and Boundary

Fair Association

Editor, The Gazette:How much more munici-

pal and provincial tax dollars do we have to spend before the Dear Committee and the city council take some real action to reduce the number of deer living in the city?

How long has the Deer Committee been active, eight

or nine years? How many fewer deer do we have?

It would seem this is prob-ably the best time of year to round up a couple of dozen or more and release them up the Burrell or Granby. What about getting the local wildlife asso-ciation involved to volunteer some time to the roundup and

release? This could keep the cost down.

Come on, Deer Commit-tee and city council, let’s have some real action to reduce the deer population in the city.

Ray Hanson,Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette:The Rotary Spray Park

(now under construction) will be a tremendous asset to the community and our thanks should go to all those involved in its development and fund raising. Our children, and maybe the odd adult, will revel in it.

In my opinion, the picture on the front page of the Oct. 7 Gazette depicts how a small group can work together to enhance the community spirit; $10,000 donated to the park from just a few of our fellow citizens of the Sunshine Valley is impressive and very gener-ous.

I can imagine next year when, after the cricket match-es, the players will move over to the spray park, meet-up with their families, and then refresh themselves with the cooling waters.

Students predicted NDP win

is regionalized,” said Robinson. “In some parts we feel very confident and others not so confi-dent and in other areas we’re just in a quandary. We couldn’t really calculate how it would go un-til we went up 2,000 and started holding there.”

Both Benson and Robinson had very long days working to manage scrutineers and coordi-nate the election night gathering.

Benson said they had worked in the office for 77 days organizing efforts for the campaign.

“We tried to get a good group of people to work here and we did,” he said. “We did just as well this year as Alex (previous MP Atamanen-ko) in his last election. The polls show that Grand Forks is an NDP stronghold and we have to hold on to that because in two years we have a provin-cial election.”

Robinson said it was important for the NDP to have an office in Grand Forks. “A presence is always noted,” he said. “We were the only party that had an actual office in the Boundary. I think that helps so the people believe we are taking

care of it. Rural ridings are very difficult to orga-nize. The more you can break it down the better it is. You get way more done face to face. People appreciate talking to you in person.”

“I think he’ll serve the people very well,” said Robinson. “I believe one of the reasons he did win was because Alex did serve the people well. Not only that but you look at Canning’s persona. He’s very caring. You have the feeling he’s going to do something very special.”

In the Kootenay-Columbia region, which now includes Nelson and Salmo, Wayne Stetski of the NDP won a narrow battle with incumbent David Wilks of the Conservatives 37.2 per cent to 36.8 per cent.

Liberals won the most B.C. seats with 17 (40.5 per cent of total), while the NDP had 14 (33.3 per cent) and Conservatives had 10 (23.8 per cent). Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, once again won her riding in Saanich-Gulf Islands for the lone Green Party victory.

A couple of schools in the region conducted their own student votes for the federal election. The two schools, Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) and Christina Lake Elementary (CLES), were pretty close to the actual vote.

After learning about the voting process and Canada’s electoral system, students from Grades 1 through 7 at CLES took part in a nation-wide student vote.

The Grade 6/7 class presented platforms from each of the five candidates running in the South Okanagan - West Kootenay riding. After the student body listened to the speeches, they then voted in an actual simulated vote using all of Election Canada materials including voting screens, ballots, and ballot boxes with seals, poll-ing stations and designated election officials.

The following was the result of the 59 CLES students who participated.CLES Vote Summary:Richard Cannings — New Democratic Party = 18Connie Denesiuk — Liberal Party of Canada = 13Brian Gray — Independent = 8Marshall Neufeld — Conservative Party of Canada = 4Samantha Troy — Green Party of Canada = 16Total number of valid votes = 59Total number of rejected ballots = 1

Here is a summary of the actual vote in our riding from CIVIX Student Vote: www.student-vote.ca/results/district_results/7/1/59029.

At GFSS, all the students in the school from Grade 8 to 12 voted on Oct. 15 for their favourite candidate. The students had to a chance to hear from four of the five candidates (except indepen-dent Brian Gray) during their own all-candidates forum on Oct. 7.

GFSS Vote Summary:Richard Cannings — New Democratic Party = 41 per centConnie Denesiuk — Liberal Party of Canada = 33Samantha Troy — Green Party of Canada = 14Marshall Neufeld — Conservative Party of Canada = 11Brian Gray — Independent = 1

The national results for the Student Vote, which involved 6,000 schools and 850,000 stu-dents, saw the Liberals win a majority with 223 ridings won. Conservatives were second with 69, while NDP held 40 and the Green Party four.

Dispute ends in slashed tires

Mischief on GranbyOn Oct. 13, Grand Forks RCMP were called

to a report of a case of mischief where two tires were slashed on a vehicle out on Granby Road near Grand Forks.

“It appears that two males got into a dispute over some money and one of them slashed two tires on a 1992 Plymouth Voyager,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz. “At this time the matter is still be-ing investigated.”Marijuana found in vehicle

On Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m., a vehicle was ob-served speeding on North Fork Road just outside of Grand Forks.

“The vehicle was pulled over,” said Lanz. “When the police approached the vehicle they could smell the strong odor of marijuana. All the occupants of the vehicle were arrested and the vehicle was searched.”

Nine point five grams of marijuana were found in the vehicle.

“The driver of the vehicle was given a 24-hour prohibition for being under the influence of a drug,” said Lanz. “The vehicle was impounded for 24 hours.”

The driver is a 19-year-old male from Calgary, Alberta.

Wannabe thief scared offOn Oct. 14 at 10:10 p.m., police received a re-

port of a person attempting to steal items from a vehicle parked on 62th Avenue.

“The owner of the vehicle observed a person in their vehicle,” said Lanz. “When the suspect noticed they were being watched, they pulled their hoodie over their head and departed the area.”

Lanz said nothing was stolen from the vehicle.Theft from vehicle

On Oct. 14 at 9:37 p.m. police received a call regarding a theft from a vehicle parked behind Second Street.

“A person went into the vehicle and stole a duffel bag, which contained personal items,” said Lanz. “The duffel bag was identifiable. The police attended one location off Highway 3 and when doing enquiries regarding the stolen bag, the bag was noticed outside of a residence.”

Lanz said that as a result of the investigation, a person was identified as having possession of these items. The suspect, a 34-year-old female living in Grand Forks, was arrested and later re-leased on a promise to appear for a theft under $5,000.

POLICE BRIEFS By Craig Lindsay

$30,000 for a SUV vehicle replacement for 2015 but it was clear it was not enough for an electric vehicle. Council was told that prices start around $38,000 and range to $45,000 for entry models with range extenders to travel over 250 kilome-tres.

During discussion on the topic, Councillor Ross questioned why the city would go ahead with the purchase of the electric vehicle after Tes-la reneged on the free charging stations.

“I’m not comfortable tonight approving the purchase of this vehicle for an additional $15,000,” she said. Ross added that she didn’t know why council needed to approve an electric vehicle right away.

Reid told council the electric vehicle would

not be a Tesla vehicle. He said the city is looking at provincial incentives as well.

“We just want to make sure we have enough to get an electric vehicle. There are Chevys and other (electric vehicle) models we’d like to pur-sue,” said Reid.

Allin said that purchasing a new vehicle for the city was already approved by council for the financial plan.

“Now we’re undertaking an electric vehicle opportunity and how that would work with our fleet and to reduce our carbon footprint,” he said. “To make sure we were walking the walk, so to speak, in regards to our carbon neutrality. That is the request for the additional funding in the bud-get. But there is not a hurry on it at this time.”

Grand Forks City Council met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13, rather than on Monday due to the Thanksgiv-ing statutory holiday.Tax exemptions

Council unanimously voted the first three readings of bylaw No. 2018—2016 permissive tax exemptions.

Nine churches in Grand Forks are exempted at an es-timated value of $1,783.77 in 2016.

There are also several recre-ational and non-profit organiza-tions exempt from the payment of expected city property taxes including: Grand Forks Curl-ing Club (estimated 2016 prop-erty taxes exempted $8,457.01), Grand Forks Masonic Building Society ($387.41), and Royal Canadian Legion ($3,831.54).Strata conversion

Council voted unanimously to approve the strata conver-sion application of a commer-cial/residential building locat-ed at 7330 Riverside Drive.

Valley Heights Develop-ment made the application for preliminary approval of a strata conversion for four apartments upstairs and three commercial units on the ground floor.

The backgrounder states that the property is desig-nated as being commercial/downtown heritage develop-ment permit area and zoned commercial core. The building is considered “existing non-conforming” in that the apart-ments upstairs are 50 per cent of the building and the current

zoning bylaw for the com-mercial core states that not more than 30 per cent of the

principal building shall be used for apartments.

“The applicant has gone through extensive renova-tions,” said Sasha Bird, man-ager of development and engi-neering for Grand Forks. “They have provided the required documentation including the site one profile and everything that’s required by the Strata Act.”Development Variance Permit

In conjunction with the strata conversation applica-tion, council also unanimously approved an application for a development variance permit at 7330 Riverside Drive.

The permit would allow an increase in the ratio of apart-ment to the principal building from 30 per cent to 50 per cent to allow for the current four apartments upstairs to remain and to comply with the zoning bylaw.

Councillor Krog brought forward the motion and com-mented, “To take that building and create what is there now from what was there before is pretty impressive and that’s just the initiative we need in this community.”Ticketing amendment de-ferred

Council deferred the final reading of the municipal tick-eting and information bylaw amendment due to the fact that there was a schedule missing in the agenda.

The motion, which would allow better control and en-forcement of the watering re-

strictions bylaw, will be voted on at the next council meeting.

Water meter bylaw deferred

Council once again deferred a decision on final reading for the water regulations bylaw be-cause they wanted to wait until they had everyone at council (Chris Hammett was absent). The bylaw would extend the timelines for water meter in-stallations without penalty to Dec. 31, 2015 and cleans up some language and billing con-cerns.

Council planned to vote on final reading at the next regular meeting; however, they were notified by Councillor Ross that she would be missing the next two meetings.

The motion will be brought forward again for final reading at the Nov. 30 regular council meeting.Election bylaw approved

In preparation for the up-coming by-election necessitat-ed by the resignation of coun-cillor Michael Wirischagin, council unanimously approved existing bylaw No. 1999 as the elections procedure bylaw. The city is legislatively obligated to have an elections procedure by-law in place at least six weeks prior to the start of the nomina-tion period.

The cost of the byelection is estimated at approximately $8,000 to $10,000.RDKB report

bal report on the RDKB. Krog stated he at-tended a BEDC (Boundary Economic De-velopment Committee) meeting in Grand Forks on Oct. 6.

Krog said there were several topics discussed including the Rural Dividend,

which was announced at the UBCM and gives up to $75 million to communities under 25,000 for transitioning their econo-mies. “We will be talking further about how that is going to roll out in Grand Forks,” he said at council.

Another focus at the BEDC was trails. “We’re trying to implement a region-wide trails strategy with a region-wide trails master plan,” said Krog.

Krog said the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) was the “poster child” for trails and that the RDKB

would be studying their success.“They have an extensive regional trail

system in the RDOS,” he said. “It’s a true regional one in which all municipalities and electoral areas participate in. They did an comprehensive trails master plan as well.”

The trails plan cost the RDOS $50,000 in 2011 and included extensive consultation, Krog added.

He said the RDKB board would like to see a master plan for the trails as well as complete mapping, and possibly an app for phone/tablet.

Krog also noted that he had talked with Alan Stanley, RDKB manager of environ-mental services, who asked if the city had found an alternate site for the recycling bins at the fire hall.

“The fact that the new fire truck is here, they’re looking at removing the bins so they can have the access,” said Krog. “I know the fire department is anxious to be able to access the lot properly. As per right now I haven’t been able to find any site that would be suitable for the taxpayers of Grand Forks to pay above what we already pay for waste

management.”Councillor reportsKonrad

In his written re-port to council, Mayor Frank Konrad stated that on Sept. 12 he and his wife attended the Cops for Kids Ride dinner at Omega Res-taurant.

He said, “It was an honour to have been invited representing the city and being able to realize that another great group of people are doing so much for our communities.”

Konrad noted he attended the Union of British Columbia Mu-nicipalities (UBCM) conference in Vancou-ver from Sept. 20-26. “What an interesting, informative time it was,” he wrote. Thompson

Councillor Chris-tine Thompson wrote in her report to coun-cil that she attended meetings of the Tran-sition Housing Project Steering Committee on Sept. 15 and 16.

“The work of the committee is coming along nicely and a re-port to council will be forthcoming fairly soon,” she said.

Thompson, along with councillors Ross and Hammett and CAO Doug Allin, also attended UBCM.

She reported that she presented Grand Forks’ resolution B102 dealing with mari-juana derivatives. She was pleased to report that it was was over-whelmingly support-ed.Ross

Ross wrote that she continues to meet with concerned citizens re-garding water qual-ity and impact of live-stock in the Kettle and Granby Rivers.

She would like to see the environment committee continue to work with appropriate groups and organiza-tions in preparation for 2016 Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) AGM and UBCM AGM in order to bring a collective resolution forward.

About 50 people gathered at the Blue-joint Rec Site Thursday for the grand opening of the “Trails of the North Fork” project.

An initiative of the Grand Forks ATV Club, the club part-nered with National Trails Coalition and Ministry of Social De-velopment and Social Innovation to com-plete “Trails of the North Fork,“ which saw Bluejoint Rec Site completed and sign-age erected over ap-proximately 500 kilo-metres of trails in the North Fork region.

The Grand Forks ATV Club has been proactive in fulfilling its vision, which was set out when it was formed in 2008.

At that time there was a movement to create a Wildlife Man-agement Plan for the Gilpin, Morrissey, Stewart Creek areas. This area includes a large number of hect-ares of south-facing slopes, the Gilpin Grassland Provincial Park, grazed range-land areas, multiple forest tenure holders and in addition is used by many different groups as a recreation area.

active in preserving the environ-ment and wildlife habitat, pro-tecting our rights and privileges to access Crown land, promot-ing safe and responsible opera-tion of ORVs, planning events and organizing rides and meet-ings for every trail enthusiast to attend.

The club is dedicated to pro-moting safe riding on marked trails for all riders, youth and se-niors alike. The majority of our members want to get out, ride and see the beautiful areas in British Columbia on recognized trails in a safe and responsible manner.

The club’s membership over the years since 2008 has grown to approximately 100 members. The club has supplied many rid-ers with a certified ATV safety course, has held many commu-nity gatherings promoting safe and responsible use of the re-gions outdoors, and presented guest speakers on wildlife, inva-sive species control and regula-tions pertaining to the use of For-est Service and non-status roads.

In 2013 the Boundary Coun-try Trails Agreement was creat-ed. This agreement is the first in B.C. to be signed by many trail users, municipal governments and others promoting collabo-ration and cooperation when making decisions on trail issues in our region.

The GFATV Club brought all partners who were interested together in the fall of 2013 with the intent of developing an edu-

cational project in the Morrissey, Gilpin and Stewart Creek areas.

There had been problems in these areas with users not knowing where private proper-ty boundaries were located and regulations on trapping rights. The trails were not marked and there were many species at risk in the area that users were not aware of.

The area is used heavily with many attributes but the club felt there was a very large educa-tional component missing and that over 90 per cent of the users would respect the area’s sensi-tivity and diversity if they were made aware of what the issues were. The partners agreed a pro-posal should be developed and presented.

The club felt that first there could be areas created (staging sites) where outdoor toilet facili-ties could be provided, educa-tional material could be placed, equipment safely unloaded and loaded, users could park safely off the road, and awareness seminars could be held.

There are many Forest Ser-vice roads old and new in the proposed area with no signage for users to know where to go, what areas are sensitive, what times of the year wildlife needs more awareness, how users can support conservation efforts, and many more education op-portunities could be presented by other interest groups once staging areas where developed.

In spring of 2014 a proposal

was presented to interested partners and was well received by all that attended. Public meetings were then held for comment and the proposal was modified to reflect public con-cerns.

In early April and May other public events were held show-ing maps of the proposed trails and allowing for more input and participation by the many partners and the community.

With the confirmed invest-ment from the partners, the GFATV Club was able to secure a Job Creation Grant through Ministry of Social Development and Social. The funding was to develop trails, signage, develop three staging areas, place five heritage benches and clear over 134 kilometres of existing Forest Service roads.

In 2015, with the partners’ help. there will be educational workshops for the many users motorized and non-motorized promoting respect for the wild-life, environment and private property as well as different ten-ure holders in the area.

Current membership of the club is 100.

The Grand Forks ATV Club continues to feel that being pro-active in the management of our natural resources is far better than waiting until the problems are insurmountable. There will always be those who are part of the problem but we feel that through education we can affect positive change.

New spacious rec sites (inset) and a large staging area and interpretive centre (above), along with signage along 500 kilometres of trails, marks the completion of the Trails of the North Fork project.

hosts conferenceA group of local self-advocates put

on a conference on Thursday in Grand Forks at the Gospel Chapel gym. There were sessions on the use of service ani-mals, technology and apps, and adap-tive adventures.

The advocates came up with the idea for the event and organized the whole conference with advisement from Chris-tine-Ann Baker and Michelle Lee.

“They did all the planning them-selves,” said Baker. “They came up with the speakers and did all the booking with advisement from Michelle and my-self.”

Baker said the idea came out of the advocates attending conferences in oth-er towns.

“They decided it would be a good idea to have one in Grand Forks because Grand Forks needed to understand what self-advocates do and why we’re here,” she said, “and just give a general under-standing of who we are and what we do. Even with disabilities and diversities we can do a lot for the city.”

Baker said the group hoped for a few more attendees but she said the atten-dance was decent for the first year.

“We would like to continue it,” said Baker. “It took a year to plan it so we’ll look at it and decide how often we can run it.”

Dave Bachmier talked at the Over-coming Barriers conference about his experience with PTSD and how having a service dog (Pinnar) has helped him.

The Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) junior boys travelled to Penticton this past weekend. The Wolves finished fifth in a 10-team tourna-ment. Coach Helen Argue said the boys played extremely well considering they were missing two of their veteran players.

“We also had three players that were playing their first ever volleyball tournament,” she said. “We placed third in our pool which put us in the play-off round where we finished fifth overall.”

ORV registrationmandatory on Nov. 1SUBMITTEDto the Grand Forks Gazette

Off-road vehicle registration and safety provisions are mandatory on Crown land effective Nov. 1, 2015, following passage of regulations in support of the Off-Road Vehicle Act.

The new regulations will promote safe and responsible use of B.C.’s backcountry, and include provisions on number plate placement, rules for child operators and safety equipment requirements. Operating standards include:

• Helmets: Helmets must be worn when operating an off-road vehicle (ORV).

• Seat belts: If a manufacturer has installed belts, then the belt must be worn during the operation of that vehicle.

• Lights: ORVs must use lights during low visibility condi-tions when riding on Crown land 30 minutes after sunset or 30 minutes before sunrise. If lights are not installed by the manu-facturer, temporary lights can be attached to the ORV.

• Children: Children must be supervised when riding on Crown land and be riding an appropriate sized ORV as recom-mended by the manufacturer.

For more detailed information on the new ORV regulations there is a detailed FAQ at: for.gov.bc.ca/mof/orv/.

Over the years the Baby’s Best Chance program has had many amazing young women step up to the plate and become volunteer peer mentors with their program.

These women have done so many things to enhance the program and support pregnant women and new mothers. They have created won-derful resources, assisted workers in organizing for groups and commu-nity events, presented workshops at conferences, and provided support to other women.

This month five current peer mentors completed an online breast-feeding course with a few more still working to complete them. Linda Manzon, public health nurse and Interior Health breastfeeding cham-pion, has mentored them through 21 modules of breastfeeding infor-mation.

All these women have a desire to support women to learn about breastfeeding and overcome any challenges that may be encountered.

Jessie Denisoff who has breastfed four children, attended many Breast-feeding Cafés and more recently has been facilitating a few of the cafés, says, “I enjoy offering breastfeeding support to other women and believe that having the extra information from this course will benefit me and those I support in the future. You can never have too much information or resources.”

Rachel Neumann, a local pharmacist and mother of two, says she took that course and wishes to be a breastfeeding peer mentor because she is passionate about breastfeeding and as a pharmacist under-stands the health ben-efits for both mother and baby, and as a mother because she knows what a hard job being a mother is.

Two peer mentors

are from the West Boundary: Jen-nifer Mallach from Rock Creek and Jessi Bryan formerly from Green-wood.

Jessi says, “I struggled with breastfeeding recently, so it’s very appealing to me to have new knowl-edge that I can share with moms that might be helpful.”

And Melanie Shenstone from Christina Lake has also completed the course because she’s known moms who have had challenges and found it emotionally crushing so she wants to help women in her community with their breastfeeding goals. Plus she loves the connection that breastfeeding has given her and her son.

The whole Boundary is covered with breastfeeding-educated peer mentors and we’re hoping this will improve the supports for women and our breastfeeding rates in the Boundary for better long-term health for moms and babies. Way to go, ladies, and keep at it those who are still working towards complet-ing this course.

Please call the Glanville Centre if you have questions Kristy Kuromi or Cynthia Garnett 250-442-2267 or the public health nurses at 250-443-3150.
