RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) is a Grade 5, 6 and 7 group from Hutton Elementary School that has been working tirelessly over the last few months to spread kindness throughout the community.

The missions are called “storms” and some of these have included “Kindness Tickets” on car windshields at Extra Foods and a “Ropes for Hope” art project.

This was done in collaboration with Green-wood Elementary where fl ags of encouragement were made for the community of Westbridge which was devastated by the fi re.

Last week the students dressed up and “stormed” local streets “trick-or-treating” for non-perishable food items, which were donated to the local food bank. The students were seen with a wagon in tow carrying food items from neighbourhood houses to the school where a

food donation bin is set up outside the offi ce. This bin will remain outside the offi ce for one

more week as more donations are encouraged to come in before taking all the goods to the food bank.

The students have identifi ed how good it feels to spread kindness and most importantly, the in-

trinsic reward of giving to others. As a group we wish to spread as much kindness, support and encouragement as possible to our Grand Forks community.

Tourism in the Boundary region is an undeveloped gold mine, according to local MLA Bill Barlee. “Both Grand Forks and Greenwood have retained their character and that will serve them very well in the future,” says Barlee, re-ferring to the importance of developing soft adventure and historical tourism in the area.2000

Grand Forks Secondary School was evacuated Monday, the result of a bomb threat. According to principal Doug Bryden, the handwritten threat was found on the wall of a bathroom. The building was declared bomb-free later in the day; students had been sent home.2005

Air quality in Grand Forks is among the worst in B.C. And, according to the report Particulate Matter in British Columbia, Grand Forks, Merrit, Ver-non, Prince George and Williams Lake showed some of the highest concentra-tions of particulate matter in air shed sampling from 1992 to December 2000.2010

The Granby Wilderness society host-ed the planting of 1,600 trees on the shore of the Kettle River in the South Ruckle area. Funding was thanks to Tree Canada and Majesta. Project coordina-tor Jenny Coleshill said the benefi ts of the program is that it provides habitat for birds and other animals, prevents soil erosion and creates a buffer from roadways.

Man fails to make court appearanceOn Oct. 26 at 9:30 a.m., a male was re-

quired to appear in Grand Forks Court for a trial.

“The male failed to appear in court at the required time and a warrant was issued for his arrest,” said Cpl. Richard Lanz of the Grand Forks RCMP detach-ment. “The male was later arrested in the day and brought back.”

Lanz said a Justice of the Peace hear-ing was held and the male was released to appear in court at a new date. The male, a 53-year-old Grand Forks resi-dent, is possibly facing a new charge of failing to appear.Stolen vehicle found

On Oct. 27 at 4:16 p.m., police were called to a vehicle that was parked on Hardy Mountain Road. “Upon inves-tigation, it was determined that the ve-hicle had been stolen from a residence on Central Avenue in Grand Forks,” said Lanz. “The registered owner of the ve-hicle has been contacted.” Stealing bottles

On Oct. 28 at 3:11 a.m., a report was received of two males stealing bottles from the downtown area of Grand Forks. “As a result of the investigation, two males were located and arrested for pos-session of stolen property under $5,000,” said Lanz. “One male was searched and

some morphine pills were located on this male.”

Both persons have been charged for having sto-len property, while one male was also charged with possession of morphine.

The males are 53 and 55 years of age and are both residents of Grand Forks.Police attend possible assault

On Oct. 28 at 5:10 p.m., police were called to a possible domestic assault in progress.

“Police attended and a male was ar-rested and brought back to the detach-ment,” said Lanz. “During the investi-gation, it was determined that the male was breaching his conditions to have no contact with the female. As the male was being lodged into cells, a small amount of methamephetamine was located on his person.”

The male, a 42-year-old, has been re-leased for court for breaching his pro-bation order and possession of meth-amphetamines. He was released from custody with a promise to appear.

Later that evening, at 10:35 p.m. as a result of the previous reported assault, the female was located and also arrested on the assault, “as it was determined that she was the aggressor in this matter,” said Lanz. “Once the female was arrest-ed and brought back to cells, drugs were located on her person such as metham-phetamine, marijuana and OxyContin.”

The female, a 34-year-old, will appear

in court for these matters.Halloween havoc

On Oct. 31 at 11:40 p.m., police were called to an inebriated male who tried to get into a residence on 19th Street.

“The male was banging on a person’s door at which he didn’t belong at,” said Lanz. “Police attended and found the male, who was very intoxicated and was arrested and lodged in cells.”

The male, a 22-year-old Grand Forks resident, was released the following morning with a violation ticket for being intoxicated in a public place.Man tries to enter house

On Nov. 1 at 5:45 a.m., police were called to a suspicious person being at a residence trying to get in.

“The male departed this residence and was later located by Highway 3 and Nursery Road,” said Lanz. “The male had been drinking and was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place. Further checks were conducted and the male was wanted for unendorsed warrants out of the Lower Mainland.” Lanz said the male, a 28-year-old from Vancouver, was also on conditions to ab-stain from alcohol. Lanz reported that other than the one arrest, Halloween was pretty quiet for the Grand Forks RCMP. “We haven’t got any calls for mischief or anything like that,” said Lanz.

Halloween is over and the costumes have been put away for another year. It seems each year the number of actual trick-or-treaters diminishes. Not to lament, but when we were younger the streets were packed with hundreds of little devils, angels, ghosts and goblins all going door to door looking for can-dy. When we were done we used to go home and dump out our bags and count our haul. Then we’d eat most of it and go to bed with a tummy ache.

For several reasons, the time-honoured tradition appears to be dwindling. Nowadays, from a young age, children have it drilled into them not to talk to strangers and not to go anywhere without either pa-rental permission or checking in every five minutes.

Knocking on strangers’ doors and then eating candy they hand out for nothing would seem to contradict that careful and safe “bubble” lifestyle.

Of course, there are other reasons including the abundance of other, safer alternatives. The Rotary bonfire is one local one. Most communities now have some sort of Halloween gathering which has candy and costumes and fun games.

With plenty of adults around, the controlled events are much safer. But whatever are we going todo with all that leftover candy?

What really is the best thing since sliced bread?

There have been many great inven-tions in the last 100 years or so from the washing machine (1908) to the televi-sion (1924) to the pacemaker (1926) to the ballpoint pen (1938) to the jet air-liner (1958).

In fact, sliced bread was invented in 1928. What did they say everything was the greatest thing since sliced bread before that? I have no idea.

The nuclear reactor was invented in 1951 and the laser came nine years later.

Medical inventions could be the most beneficial as who can imagine life before X-rays (1895), penicillin (1928) or blood transfusions (1907). Actu-ally the writers of the HBO series The Knick do a pretty good job on a show about a hospital in New York near the turn of the 19th century. Basically any-thing regarding medical treatment be-yond a bandage ends up being a casu-alty. They use a foot pump to vacuum blood out. It’s kind of gory.

The first X-ray image was produced by German physicist Wilhelm Ront-gen, who did it by accident. Rontgen was trying to see if cathode rays could penetrate glass. He forgot to put a screen in front of one of the glowing tubes and it left an impression on a piece of cardboard. When I mess up at work all I ever get is an earful.

Rontgen named the rays that caused the glow X-rays because of their un-known nature. He took a radiograph (the first X-ray) of his wife’s left hand on Dec. 22, 1895.

The discovery transformed medi-cine almost over night. Of course, back then it was a little different than now. It apparently took 90 minutes to get the image whereas now it takes 90 milliseconds using modern X-ray ma-chines. Who could keep still for that long, especially if you had a broken bone?

The machine also produced a radia-tion dose more than 1,500 times great than today’s dosage. Back then the effects of radiation weren’t very well known.

Other famous inventors of the time Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison both did their own tests of X-rays and ra-diation. In fact, Edison’s assistant Clar-

ence Dally liked to test the X-ray tubes on his own hands causing him to first lose his arms (by amputation) and then his life to skin cancer.

Many other scientists, physicians and inventors also told stories of burns, hair loss and worse in technical journals of the time.

Thankfully, nowadays the exposure time and amount of radiation is much less.

As for other life-altering inventions, beer traces back to ancient Mesopota-mia. It took a little while for mankind to invent television and hockey so peo-ple had something to do while drink-ing said beer.

Electronics has probably had the most impressive progression in histo-ry. The first computers were invented in the 1940s and would fill a room.

The first electronic programmable computer, called ENIAC, came out in 1943. Programs had to be written into it and mechanically set into the machine with manual resetting of plugs and switches. The high speed memory was limited to 20 words (about 80 bytes). ENIAC cost $500,000 and weighed 30 tons. It wasn’t until a couple of decades later that humanity saw real progress to today’s age where we can check

The first computer game (Space-war) came out in 1962; the ubiquitous mouse was invented in 1964; the origi-nal Internet, called ARPAnet (no rela-tion to Skynet) came out in 1969; the first mobile phone came out in 1977; the first home computer, the IBM PC, was released in 1981; the actual World Wide Web started in 1990; and Wi-Fi, which allowed cell phone users to ac-cess the Internet from most places, 1997.

The cell phone is probably my pick for top invention of the last 50 years. To basically have a computer in your pocket that is able to access the Internet from almost anywhere using either Wi-Fi or phone networks. Texting has also come a long way and made communi-cation much easier for people whether friends or family. I remember the old days of the rotary dial phone and no answering machine wondering if that special someone called back or if your friends are going out but you haven’t seen them. Now if you don’t hear from someone in five minutes you wonder if they’re mad at you, or if they’re just busy, or maybe they’re charging their phone. I guess that’s progress.

Category 3 open fires are once again per-mitted in the Boundary Fire Zone of the Southeast Fire Centre, due to a decreased risk of wildfires.

Although all categories of open fires are now permitted throughout the Southeast Fire Centre, the BC Wildfire Service is asking the public to remain vigilant with any fire use. Homeowners and industry personnel are en-couraged to take the following precautions:

• Ensure that enough people, water, tools, equipment and a fire suppression system are on hand to control the fire and to prevent it escaping.

• Do not burn in windy conditions. The

weather can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible ma-terial and start new fires.

• Establish an adequate fuel break around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material.

• Never leave a fire unattended.• Make sure your fire is completely extin-

guished and the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave the area for any length of time.

Anyone planning to conduct Category 3 fires or large-scale industrial burning must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717.

RDKB board receives thanksThe Regional District of the

Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board of directors met in Grand Forks on Oct. 29 for their regu-lar montly board meeting.

The board heard a presen-tation from Neil Muth, CEO of Columbia Basin Trust, who gave an overview of the trust’s current initiatives and future plans. After hearing from Muth, the board discusses a number of different issues pertaining to the region. Board receives thanks from Christina Lakers

The RDKB board of direc-tors received a letter from Mike Fairweather, chair of the Chris-tina Lake Waterfront Property Owner’s Society, thanking the RDKB for its work in hosting meetings and providing in-formation through the RDKB website concerning the risk to persons and property from the wildfires from Washington State and southeast B.C. this past summer.

The group also asked the board to pass on thanks to the American and Canadian fire-fighters who were actively involved in helping to con-trol fires from the Kettle River (Stickpin) complex and the fire on Highway 3 on the lower por-tion of the Paulson Summit that briefly closed Highway 3. Kootenay Boundary Animal Control filed their monthy re-port with the RDKB for Septem-ber. In Grand Forks, there were 21 calls and six written com-plaints. The breakdown was 21 for dogs, four for livestock and two other. One animal was im-pounded, while there were two tickets, two warnings and three licences issued. No booze in RDKB fire halls

The RDKB board of direc-tors approved a policy for al-cohol in RDKB fire halls and a staff recognition policy. The policy states that no alcoholic beverages will be allowed in any RDKB fire hall, except for

specific circumstances as out-lined in the policy. Staff recognition

The board also approved a policy for employee recogni-tion. The staff recognition poli-cy recognizes RDKB employees for extended periods of service to the regional district as well as on retirement or recognition. Board receives GF rec com-mission minutes

The RDKB board received the draft minutes of the Grand Forks and District Recreation Commission from Oct. 15.

New business from the min-utes including filling vacant positions on the board, which is recruiting for a new mem-ber from Area D/Rural Grand Forks and one from the City of Grand Forks.

Other new business was a budget review of the 2016 pre-liminary budget, which will be updated and ready for the rec commission’s Nov. 12 meeting. Two per cent was approved for the five-year-plan so no approval was required for the 2016 fee increase.

Rec staff reported meeting with Graham Watt about the Learning Garden, which is be-ing built outside the Grand Forks Aquatic Centre. At this time they are working on grants and ongoing funding for fencing. The group has received materials for the storage shed/water meter shed. Public hearing minutes presented

The minutes of the public hearing for the RDKB zoning amendment bylaw No. 1579 were presented. The amend-ment would amend electoral Area D/Rural Grand Forks zoning bylaw No. 1299.

At the public hearing, RDKB planner Carly Rimell provided a summary of the proposed zoning amendment for 3250 6th West Road to rezone the subject property from Industrial 4 to Estate Lot Residential 3 within Area D/Rural Grand Forks zoning bylaw No. 1299 from

the board adopted the amend-ment. The property being re-zoned (Lot 3, DL 700, SDYD, Plan KAP38) will be moved from the current Industrial 4 to Estate Lot Residential 3. Building bylaw contravention received

The board of directors re-ceived a staff report from Mark Andison, general manager of operations/deputy CAO, re-garding a building bylaw con-travention for a property on 6279 College Road in Area D. “In this case, the owners con-structed an addition to a single family dwelling on the prop-erty without the benefit of a building permit,” said Andison to the Gazette.

Andison added that the owners applied for a permit but never got the final inspec-tion completed. “There will be no action taken as a result of the board’s resolution last week other than to put a notice on title but that leaves the door open,” he said. “The board could take further action but at this point its just putting a notice on title.”

Andison said having a notice on title on a property makes it difficult for property owners to sell the property because banks won’t usually issue a mortgage because they know there has been some construction that has gone on on the property without a building permit.

“Usually they come back to us in the future trying to rec-tify the issue,” he said. “At that point, they’ll try to resolve any issues with the building per-mit.” Rock Creek medical marijuana

Edna Humphries of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C. and Yukon branch was at the Service BC office in Grand Forks on Oct. 28 to present staff members Karin Nuyten and Gina Burroughs with a community leadership award.

“The award is to recognized your leadership, dedication and support of organ donation,” said Humphries.

Service BC in Grand Forks has registered 46 organ donors.

According to the kidney foundation, right now there are over 500 patients in B.C. waiting

for a life-saving organ transplant, and almost 400 waiting for a kidney. Sadly, many of these pa-tients will die waiting.

Humphries said that the need for organs is far great than the available supply.

“The kidney foundation’s latest polls show that 95 per cent of British Columbians support organ donation yet only 19 per cent of people have registered their wishes,” said Humphries. “We have to close this gap.”

Fashion show a benefit for new Habitat build

Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC will be holding a benefi t fashion show to support the efforts to rebuild one of the homes lost in the Rock Creek fi re.

Volunteer organizer Cindy Fairs stated, “This event is a way for Habitat to be involved to help in the reconstruction of rebuilding not only a home but a community.”

The event, as Fairs describes, “is a way for us to get involved by pulling the surrounding communities throughout the region together to support all those who were impacted by the fi re of Rock Creek.”

Heather Smith of the Yellow Door Boutique in Greenwood is working in partnership with Habitat to produce a quality event that will include men’s, women’s and children’s fash-ions.

A silent auction will be held showcasing items donated such as Big White Ski passes, resort packages from the Coast Ca-pri and Prestige Inn, a wine tour for two from Distinctly Kelowna Wine Tours, memora-bilia donated by retired hockey player Kevin Sawyer, and other items that have been donated by many other generous sup-porters.

Refreshments will be served and an eclectic show of a clas-sical performance by Peri Best

and her entourage will be per-formed. Emcee Bob Dupee of Christina Lake will lead the event and local politician Linda Larson, MLA for the Boundary-Similkameen, and regional dis-trict directors Vicki Gee and Grace McGregor will be attend-ing as will many others from around the region.

HFHSEBC has to date built 20 homes within the region with the Rock Creek home to be the 21st.

The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 3 - 6 p.m. at the McArthur Centre in Greenwood. Admission is by donation.

Habitat for Humanity South-east BC has been busy raising and coordinating donations in support of the rebuilding ef-forts for those people affected by the August Rock Creek wildfi res.

The Boundary community’s people and businesses have rallied to assist the many who have lost not only their homes but also livelihoods and a way

of life. Their swift response to the disaster has helped to al-leviate the burden and stress placed on the families who are trying to prepare for the com-ing of winter.

On Friday, Oct. 30, Rick Fri-esen and Bob Huff, with Habi-tat for Humanity, picked up a donation of insulation from the Roxul Inc. plant in Grand Forks.

The donation was enough to insulate the outbuildings (pump houses and animal shel-ters) that are being built by the

Fire Needs Committee volun-teers. The Boundary commu-nities and Habitat for Human-ity have always had incredible support from Roxul, and once again they have responded with a timely and generous do-nation.

As with many veterans, for Grand Forks resident Ed Boisvenue Re-membrance Day is a special time to remember those left behind.

Boisvenue was born in Gracefield, Quebec and was raised on a farm, which he and his siblings worked on. He joined the Armed Forces at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa in 1941.

“Back in those days you did not need any official training,” recalled Boisvenue. “I learned when I was 15 years old. When I joined the army, they had me training other men to drive the big trucks.”

Boisvenue trained in Debert, Nova Scotia. He was then stationed in Ottawa and later Kingston.

Boisenvue offered to go overseas during the Second World War. “The need was there, so I went,” he said.

Across the ocean, he drove heavy trucks in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany during the war. He served overseas for five years, re-turning home in 1946. He then came back to Quebec before working his way west.

Boisvenue married a lady in Scot-land and had two children with her, a boy and a girl. After her death he remarried this time to a war bride who was a widow with two chil-dren, also a boy and girl.

The couple then had two children of their own, also a boy and girl.

Boisvenue ended up in Grand Forks and he continues to be active in the local Legion branch. “I go to the Legion once a week to play darts and horseshoes,” he said.

“I have been a Legion member for 64 years.”

Boisvenue has received many medals and commendations over the years.

He was honoured with a Certifi-cate of Recognition in 2014 by the Minister of Veterans Affairs for the 75th anniversary of significant mile-stones of the Second World War.

Boisvenue was one of more than one million Canadians who served in uniform in between 1939 and 1945. Quite an amazing number given the fact that Canada’s popula-tion at the time was only 11 million. More than 45,000 Canadians lost their lives during the war and an-other 55,000 were injured.

“Canadians like you who served during this conflict selflessly rallied together in extraordinary ways to defend the right of all people to live in peace and freedom,” said Hon. Erin O’Toole, Minister of Veteran Af-fairs, in a letter to Boisvenue.

“It is due to your brave and cou-rageous service that the struggle against tyranny and oppression was won. Canada will never forget your valiant wartime service and your life-long dedication to our great country.”

The Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation is Canada’s fi rst national, non-profi t organization which aims at honouring all Canadian military personnel that laid down their lives to protect our nation’s borders, free-doms and the quality of life we enjoy today.

Starting in 2001 as a society, our founder and executive director Mark Norman noticed that we were begin-ning to lose touch with those who protected our communities from the Boer War onto present day.

With the hope of bringing the life back into the 117,000 names inscribed on cenotaphs throughout the coun-try, Norman set to work on creating a portrait for each individual soldier to be displayed in the home community.

In 2003, our foundation was grant-ed full charitable status by the Cana-da Revenue Agency, opening up the extended opportunity to create trib-utes for the entire country. For the next nine years, completing his work as a volunteer, Norman and other volunteers helped to create many oak-framed portraits for towns and municipalities throughout the coun-try that are still on display today.

In 2012, the foundation wanted to easily get this important history into the hands of our younger generation. With that thought, the In Memoriam section of our website was born.

This section houses the same in-formation and photos as the physical portraits, but is more easily accessed by school-aged children as well as families who are no longer in their home community.

Canada’s outstanding mili-tary history and reputation has been built by citizens from all corners of the country. When called upon, these men and women courageously vol-unteered to serve our country to protect our nation’s borders, values and the quality of life we all enjoy today.

It is with their persever-ance, determination and bravery that Canada is looked upon as a global leader in international affairs and the fi rst to serve others in their time of need.

The Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation would like to send its appreciation and thanks to all Canadian military personnel that served and never made it home, served and returned to our com-munities and those who are in active service for our country.

We thank you for the time you have spent away from family, the daunting situations you are and were faced with every day and for being a hero and role model to our younger generations.

On Nov. 11, 2015, we encourage every Canadian to give thanks to those who have helped and those who currently make our country one of the greatest places to live.

The Canadian Fallen Heroes Foundation is currently creating an individual lasting trib-ute, in the form of personalized memorials, for all 117,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for our nation by way of a personalized memorial.

Each memorial contains a photo and bio-graphical information on the soldier’s life be-fore the war, at their time of enlistment, their military career and unfortunate time of death.

We need the public’s help. Our organiza-tion requires community support to garner the photos and information of their local fallen heroes in an effort to say thank you not only on Remembrance Day, but every day of the year.

Ski film benefitkicks off season

Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society (PMASS) is proud to present a ski film benefit to start off the winter season.

All proceeds go to the Youth Snow Safety and Avalanche Awareness course and the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee.

The film showing is Warren Miller Entertainment’s 66th annual film, Chasing Shadows. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for youth 12 and under.

For 66 years, Warren Miller has been making incredible ski movies. His fall tours are where skiers and snowboard-ers awaken from the long hard summer. Passions are reig-nited; friends are reunited; and ski season officially begins.

Warren Miller once said, “A pair of skis are the ultimate transportation to freedom,” and this year, we’re chasing storms, snow, lines and the freedom they grant us. As skiers and snowboarders we chase a feeling, a memory, a storm, a turn— we’ve been chasing it our whole lives and we’ll keep chasing it a lifetime more.

Bruins crush GoldenDespite the fact that it was Hal-

loween eve, the Border Bruins handed out no treats to the visit-ing Golden Rockets; Instead, GF tricked the visitors into thinking they had a chance in the game be-fore crushing them 7-3.

The Border Bears got off to a quick start with two early goals, Dylan Haney and new addition Jordan Robertson. Golden tied the game with a pair of power play goals late in the first and early in the second period.

The Bruins then scored three un-answered later in the second stanza to pull away. Scoring were Dylan Haney with two, and hometown talent Brandon Savaia. Golden got another power play goal early in the third from Tanner Wit to cut the lead to 5-3. The Rockets would have no late rally as Bruins’ for-ward Chad Grambo scored twice to put the game away and give GF the 7-3 win.

“It wasn’t even something we had to talk about,” said head coach Emery Olauson referring to the team’s quick start. “With three home games in the month of October. With Golden coming in—We’ve played a tough sched-ule lately playing teams like Bea-ver Valley and Osoyoos—we just saw an opportunity and I think the

guys were pretty hungry for an op-portunity for a win at home.”

Olauson said the players were happy to get play in front of the home crowd and come away with two points.

Haney with a hat-trick and an assist picked up the team’s game star and was also honoured with the KIJHL’s Who’s Hot in the KI spot.

“That whole line played well,” said Olauson. “We joke that those three weren’t part of our club un-til just recently. We’ve had Dylan added after camp and (Jordan) Robertson we just added out of Co-lumbia Valley and (Chad) Grambo, another castoff. We’re thrilled with all three. They’re playing great. They’re playing on our top line as a young group.”

Olauson said the coaching staff is excited to see the growth of the young players as the season devel-ops.

Anthony Galliart picked up the win in net for the Bruins turning back 35 Rocket shots.

The Bruins return to action next Friday with a home game against Princeton.

Grand Forks is now five points ahead of Spokane for fourth a final play-off spot in the Neil Murdoch division.

The Bruins have a 6-win, 11-loss, 2-overtime loss record good for 14 points.

Fred Oglo� It is with great sadness

that the family of Fred Ogl-off announces his passing on September 14, 2015 at the

age of 84 years at Boundary Regional Hospital in Grand

Forks. He was predeceased by his beloved

wife Annie in 2008. He leaves be-hind son Fred and wife Peggy, son Harry

and wife Cheryl and 5 grandchildren.Fred was born in Crescent Valley but moved to

Midway to work at Pope and Talbot sawmill and raise a family. He loved fi shing and made many springtime treks to his favorite fi shing hole in Bella Coola.

Fred acquired a love for gardening and cooking in his later years. He is deeply missed by family and friends.

Predeceased by husband George, son Edward and brother George. Survived by two sons, Tim (Pat) Abbotsford, David (Kim) Nelson; one daughter Jody (Dave) Winlaw and two granddaughters Alexis and Halley.

Donna Oglo� OGLOFF: Donna Ogloff,

age 56, of Grand Forks, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 25, 2015, at

her home in Boundary Lodge.She was born June 20, 1959, in

Oliver, B.C., the daughter of Pete and Anne Ogloff. The family moved

from Midway to Grand Forks when Donna was three years old.

Donna attended school for special needs students and later attended Selkirk College, taking life skill, emergency fi rst aid and babysitting courses. She was interested in arts and crafts and worked at Broadacres making crafts for sale. Donna loved helping Mom and Dad in the garden. She planted many special things like roses and irises that are still growing well.

She volunteered at Sunshine Manor and Extended Care for over 30 years, and retired two years ago.

Donna was very active in Special Olympics for many years and enjoyed bowling, baseball, swim-ming and fl oor hockey. She attended Special Olym-pics events around the province and came home with many awards and medals.

She was an avid life-long fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and watched them almost win a chance to compete in their third World Series. The Vancouver Canucks was her favorite hockey team. Donna loved adventure and travel. She was a lifetime member of the USCC and enjoyed attending meetings, concerts and talent shows. She also enjoyed watching DVDs of past festivals, concerts and talent shows. Singing and music were very special to Donna.

She was predeceased by her grandparents (Nick and Mary Novokshonoff), her father “Popcicle” and her other grandfather (Pete Novokshonoff).

She is survived by her mother, Anne Ogloff, her sister Irene (Greg) Farris, her uncle Nick Novok-shonoff, her aunt Helen Horkoff and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The prayer service and viewing was held on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Forks Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015, at the USCC Centre. Donna was cremated and her ashes will be buried next to her father at the USCC Cemetery. Grand Forks Funeral Home took exceptional care of the arrangements.

Kathryn “Grace” TirkKathryn Grace Tirk

passed away at Boundary Hospital on October 25th,

2015. She was born January 2nd,

1933 in Lucky Lake, Sask to Herbert and Katie Woodruff and

moved to Oliver, B.C. in 1940.Grace married Jim Tirk January 11th,

1953 where they lived in Oliver until moving to Grand Forks in 1967.

Grace is survived by her son Bryce, daughters Debbie Styles and Louise (Rob) Woodward and daughter-in-law Carol Tirk, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren. Brother Don Woodruff, sisters Betty Surinak and Linda Schaffrick and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by parents, her husband Jim, son Randy and brother Dave Woodruff.

Grace was a life member of the Hospital Auxilia-ry. She loved to play bridge 2 to 3 times a week and bowled for many years. She enjoyed going to the local baseball tournaments and always had a very large garden.

Barbara PetersIt is with great sadness we announce the passing of

Barbara Peters on October 9, 2015. She was prede-ceased by her loving husband George, her parents Mathias and Barbara Hellman, siblings Cecilia, Nikolaus, Matthew, Elizabeth, Clare, Ann, Jerome, Son-in-law Carl. Barbara is survived by her daughter Patricia, Sons Bill, Bob (Tami), brothers Jacob, William, Vanny, sister Josephine, her grand children Robert (Stephanie), Karin (Glen), Shelby, Lucas, great grand-children Tanis, Thomas, Adrianna, Leiam.

Barbara’s fi rst love was her family, spoiling all of us with her amazing talent as a cook. There was always something homemade on top of the stove or in the oven, her garden was a showcase of different fl owers and vegetables with the help of Dad, no weeds stood a chance.

Mom’s second love was her Catholic Faith, which kept her strong to the end.

We love you and miss you, but know you are in a better place. A service to follow at a later date.

We have cast our votes, seen results

I saw Justin Trudeau cast his vote. I saw Ste-phen Harper cast his vote. I saw Tom Mul-cair cast his vote(that is, via the national news).

We have seen the re-sults: Trudeau and the Liberals taking 184 ridings winning a majority government, the Conser-vatives with 99 ridings, the NDPs with 44 ridings.

Most of us in this constituency (73.57 per cent of eligible voters of South Okanagan/West Kootenay) voted to send our representative to Ottawa: Mr. Rich-ard Cannings received that honour in our riding (Grand Forks Gazette, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015).

We have all had our say in this election. What do we do with the results?

We may be elated and happy. We may be disappointed and sad. We may be angry with our electoral system that does not fully produce the regional and party percentages. But we must admit that a fair and peaceful election has taken place.

I for one want to be very thank-ful for an election result that did not cause any bloodshed that is com-mon in other parts of our world, that allowed all parties registered to speak freely in debates and in the press, and that has spoken to wishes of the people concerning the government of the past and that of the fu-ture.

Having been to oth-er parts of the world and seen the results of corrupt governments, and the use of fire-arms by mafia groups to control money on the streets, I want to say I am thankful for our peaceful election process and peace-loving citizens across our vast country.

I am also thankful

that we are a multi-cultur-al society. As a Christian I can express my views and so can others with other world-

views, but we must all respect each other and seek the benefit of all.

I also believe in the power of prayer. Men and women sent to Ottawa hold a lofty office and re-

sponsibility. I want to uphold them in weekly prayer for their safety, sensi-tivity to the issues of our great land, keeping integrity

in the midst of difficult decisions and holding up the high standards of our founding fathers of Confed-eration.

I invite my fellow citizens of Grand Forks and area to do the same.

I am reminded of Paul in Roman times, even going through difficult experiences himself when he urged people for “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for...all in au-thority.

“For this is good and accept-able in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”(1 Timothy 2:2-4)

During these cool autumn evenings, many British Columbi-ans are starting to light their fi replaces or wood stoves to help keep their homes warm. However, people who cut or use fi rewood must ensure that it was harvested legally.

Before collecting fi rewood obtain a fi re-wood permit to ensure that your fi rewood col-lection adheres to lo-cal regulations, and to verify that fi rewood collection is permitted in the area from which you plan to obtain your wood.

Firewood collection permits are free and al-low British Columbians to collect and transport fi rewood from eligible crown lands for per-sonal use. Permits must be printed, signed and carried with you when collecting fi rewood. Firewood permits are available at your local natural resource dis-trict offi ce, or online at: www.gov.bc.ca/fire-woodpermits.

To fi nd out where fi rewood harvesting is prohibited on lands identifi ed for conser-vation and/or other public use values in B.C. contact your local natural resource dis-trict offi ce.

Firewood permits and their associated documentation describe the permitted areas, methods, and amount of fi rewood that can le-gally be harvested in the different natural re-source districts.

Cutting down trees on Crown land without an appropriate permit is illegal and could re-sult in a violation ticket or fi ne.
