Emerging Challenges in Higher Education
HIGHER EDUCATION Emerging Challenges
• Increase in access to information • Easy access via ICT – access to more available options
• Movement of peoples • Cross-border employability – Quality Recognition required
• Brain drain
• Demands of post-industrial economy • Specialised skills / disciplines required
• Thus, there is an increase in competitive environment in
higher education.

Disparity of education
development!!
Disparity in Development scale
HIGHER EDUCATION Disparity in Development
• The well-equipped ones may benefit from these changes through:
• advanced technology
• financial capability
• well-established infrastructure
• Disparity in development may cause the less-equipped the loss of
opportunities including in developing institutions, faculty and
human capacity.
However, to embrace the emerging challenges in higher education,
international cooperation is a more viable approach:
• cross-border issues need multi-lateral cooperation
• International cooperation bring mutual benefits
• Strong partnership may be further forged through the network
• This would lead to further and deepening cooperation in the future and
bring forth more opportunities.
Opportunities through regional cooperation….” ASEAN”
• Regionalisation • Suitable for those which may face difficulties for structural
adjustment
• Region integrating into single blog brings positive effects for
reformation and development:
• Pool of human resources
• Knowledge / experiences / ideas sharing
• Expansion of possible cooperation areas
• Utilise each institution’s strengths and expertise
• Increase volume of interactions and exchanges
• Closer cooperation will help build partnership and enable the
region to develop and grow together.
HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES through cooperation
• Changes in the global interconnectivity of
universities due to internationalisation • Growth in information and communication
technology and its effects on competition and collaboration in a global market
• Increasing drive around the world to develop knowledge societies based on high-skilled human resources and globally responsible leaders
Importance of Graduate studies
New paradigm of our future leaders
Sustainable World
New paradigm of our future leaders To develop
globally responsible
leadership, it needs to re-think
the entire management
education framework
Leadership development is life-long learning process!!! 1. Having awareness
2. Being actionable knowledge & guided practices
3. Doing independent application 4. Enabling skilled performance
Collaborative action learning and research platform
Enabling research in service of society locally and globally
• Research will need to adjust both its purpose and methods to serve society needs by encouraging the creation of solutions which address local and global trans- disciplinary challenges.
• The shifting in research emphasis means that scholars will direct their attention away from analysing historical events in flavour of future-oriented research.
• By engaging in an on-going dialogue with a wider range of stakeholders, researchers will be able to jointly identify research topics and add value by ensuring academic rigor and a critical academic perspectives.
Enabling research in service of society locally and globally
What is next?
Keys of Concern towards research collaboration for regional integration: 1. Willingness to working together under Inter-regional
Collaboration for socio-economic development?; 2. Finding the right partners with common area of
interest and system & quality recognition; 3. Equal partnership with mutual benefit; 4. Financial, policy and academic team support
(bottom-up/top-down approach); 5. Possible working together for seeking international
support!
What is next?
• Enhancing ASEAN’s Connectivity:
– FTA for regional sustainability
– Transportation for movement of goods and services
– Telecommunication of business and people
– ICT for business, education and other development
– Energy infrastructure for better use and distribution of resources
– National and regional-level challenges to build infrastructure
– Harmonisation of higher education quality in ASEAN

– Benefit or cost of MRAs to Thais beyond 2015
– Multicultural working behaviour among ASEAN Member States: what we learn from and how to adapt with!!!
More interesting research topics to be considered!!!…….
