The ASEAN Foundation was established at ASEAN’s 30th Anniversary Commemorative Summit held in Kuala Lumpur in December 1997 to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries.

Since its founding, the ASEAN Foundation has carried out activities in the areas of social development, science and technology, environment, and culture and information. These are all human development activities ranging from training and skills development, seminar, workshop, exchange, network building, fellowship, and information dissemination.

Recent ASEAN Summit mandates and emerging challenges facing ASEAN had resulted in a re-alignment of the Foundation’s priorities and functions.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN, that now include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam, was established with the aims and purposes to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region; and to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.

To make ASEAN relevant to its people, ASEAN should be viewed by its common people as something valuable, and more importantly, addressing the real needs that they face in their daily lives. The ASEAN Foundation is one of the instruments to help achieve this.

ASEAN

The focus is now oriented towards the following areas:

i. Enhance greater awareness about ASEAN by demonstrating its relevance and benefit to the ASEAN peoples;

ii. Focus on youth as the target group and their role in building as well as sustaining an ASEAN community, both at present and into the future since they will be the movers, shakers and drivers of ASEAN in the years ahead; and

iii. Promote greater access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) by various social groups as a mechanism to empower people and at the same tim e help reduce the gaps and disparities still prevailing in the region.

The ASEAN Foundation funds projects submitted by institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations from ASEAN member and donor countries. Proposals are accepted all year round. Requirements and details of project proposal submission are available in ASEAN Foundation website (www.aseanfoundation.org).

ASEAN Foundation

ASEAN Foundation two-fold mission:» To promote greater awareness of

ASEAN, and greater interaction among the peoples of ASEAN, as well as their wider participation in ASEAN’s activities through human resources development; and

» To contribute to the evolution of a development cooperation strategy that promotes mutual assistance, equitable economic development, and the alleviation of poverty.
