the beam with an adhesive epoxy for flexural

strengthening of beams. In our testing program, six

beams were tested. Two were simply reinforced, two

were pre‐cracked reinforced beams retrofitted with

CFRP and two beams were un‐cracked reinforced

beams retrofitted with CFRP sheets. After performing

the tests, the strength of beams retrofitted with CFRP

sheets showed 75‐80 percent more strength than

simple RC beams. In addition to that, beams

retrofitted with CFRP sheets decrease the deflections

up to 80 percent at same loading condition. Also there

was significant decrease in crack widths of beams

retrofitted with CFRP sheets. Results showed that pre‐

cracked and un‐cracked beams represent similar

Title: Laboratory Characterization of Hot Mix Asphalt

(HMA) using Strength and Stiffness Parameters

Brief: Low stiffness and instability of Hot Mix Asphalt

(HMA) are often attributed to low performance which

can be controlled by optimal combination of

aggregate, bitumen content and their types/ grades.

The resilient modulus is one of the performance

parameter for mechanistic analysis of pavement

responses under dynamic loading. This project

evaluates the strength and stiffness parameters of

HMA by preparing the specimens of dense graded

mixes (NHA Gradation B: ¾ inch maximum aggregate

size) by Marshall and Gyratory compaction methods.

Three different penetration grades bitumen i.e. ARL

60‐70, ARL 80‐100 and Polymer modified bitumen

(PMB) were used for the preparation of mixes. The

indirect tensile strength test (IDT) and Resilient

Modulus tests were conducted on these specimens in

Universal Testing Machine (UTM‐25). The analysis of

experimental results revealed that the specimens

prepared by using PMB and Marshall comp active

effort showed high strength and stiffness as compared

to other penetration grades bitumen. The outcomes of

this project will help the highway agencies to improve

the mix design methodology.
