Before we get going…• How confident do you feel about finding and applying for graduate jobs during the pandemic?

Page 4: Graduate Job Hunting Strategies during the Pandemic · Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting: • Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’,

The impact of the current climate on  the graduate labour market

• The Institute of Student Employers (ISE) has reported that over a quarter of companies surveyed are either reducing or suspending their Graduate hiring plans.

• A recent poll by YouGov found that almost two thirds of University students approaching graduation had job applications paused or withdraw since the coronavirus with 80% of the students surveyed being concerned about finding a job post graduation

But… it’s not all bad news. Many employers are still hiring students or offering alternative opportunities.

Page 5: Graduate Job Hunting Strategies during the Pandemic · Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting: • Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’,

Remember… employers are under pressure too

• Do your research – try to understand their current situation

• Be patient

• Be sensitive

• Be understanding

Strategic job hunting

Page 7: Graduate Job Hunting Strategies during the Pandemic · Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting: • Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’,

3 main ways to job hunt

1. Apply for advertised roles

2. Tap into the ‘hidden’ job market

3. Get creative!

Page 8: Graduate Job Hunting Strategies during the Pandemic · Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting: • Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’,

1. Applying for advertised roles

Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting:

• Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’, ‘online’, or ‘home’ (or even ‘covid’ or ‘coronavirus’ as some jobs board have a note on listings that have been confirmed as still recruiting)

• Sort the vacancy results by date and look for vacancies added from April onwards

• Contact the organisation to check – use this as a chance to ask Q’s to demonstrate your interest

Remember… just because an opportunity doesn’t say it can’t be done remotely, doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t an option. So don’t be afraid to check with the employer whether this will be a possibility, if the current lockdown persists.

Making your applications stand out

Page 26: Graduate Job Hunting Strategies during the Pandemic · Tips for finding vacancies that are still recruiting: • Filter options by job type, then use search terms like ‘remote’,

Essential to a good CVTailor it!

• Start with the job description and person specification

• Identify all the skills/attributes/experience required for the role

• Think about your best examples of when and how you’ve applied the skills they’re looking for (Evidence)

• Address as many requirements as you can, mirroring the language used in the job description

Think of it like a dating agency! You won’t get a ‘match’ if what can be seen on your CV doesn’t correspond with what they say they are looking for.

Presentation Notes
It’s even more important in the current climate to tailor your applications and show the employer you’ve taken you’re motivated enough by the role to spend enough time target your CV cover letter or application form at the role they are advertising.
