When inventor Edwin A. Stevens died in 1868, his will provided for the estab-lishment of the university that now bears his family’s name. Two years later, in 1870, Stevens Institute of Technology opened, offering a rigorous engineering curriculum leading to the degree of Mechanical Engineer following a course of study firmly grounded both in scientific principles and the humanities.

Over subsequent decades, Stevens grew by leaps and bounds, evolving from a relatively small four-year undergraduate college of engineering into a leading global technical university with particular strengths in key fields such as defense, maritime engineering, management and finance. The university produced two Nobel Prize winners and countless new technologies, including a new process for producing synthetic penicillin.

In 1971, Stevens opened its doors to women for the first time. In 1982, Stevens became the first major U.S. educational institution to require students to pur-chase and use personal computers in the classroom. At approximately this same time, Stevens also developed one of the nation’s first intranets, foretelling a revolution in information technology.

Today Stevens continues to grow, expanding enrollment, facilities and research programs. The university’s collaborations with industry and government include three National Centers of Excellence, designations from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense and Office of Naval Research.

Stevens faculty and alumni continue to make a significant impact globally, build-ing upon the legacy of its founding family.

Stevens Institute of Technology is named for the distinguished family known as “America’s First Family of Inventors.” The Stevens family changed the face of American engineering forever, designing steamboats, locomotives, railroad tracks and a host of other technical innovations that

powered a new nation.

Jean Zu

Commencement Speaker

An accomplished scholar of mechanical vibrations and dynamics and mechatronics, Dr. Jean Zu is the newest member of the academic leadership at Stevens Institute of

Technology. She began her appointment as dean of the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering & Science (SES) on May 1, 2017. Dr. Zu’s appointment followed an extensive international search process.

As dean of SES, she will oversee a school comprising more than 170 faculty members and eight departments that serve both undergraduate and graduate students, offering more than 50 academic programs and majors.

Dr. Zu brings to Stevens a distinguished record of lead-ership in the engineering community. Her 30-year career in academia began at Tsinghua University in China, where she served as a lecturer and researcher.

She joined the University of Toronto in 1994 as a fac-ulty member in the mechanical and industrial engi-neering department. In 2009, she made history at that university by becoming the first woman to be appointed chair of the department of mechanical and industrial engineering, a role she served until this year.

Dr. Zu’s contributions to her profession are considerable. She has worked extensively to raise both awareness and funding for engineering programs at the University of Toronto and across Canada. She served as president of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) from 2012 to 2014, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME). She served

as president of the CSME from 2006 to 2008, on the Grant Selection Committee of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) from 2004 to 2007, and as the associate editor of the ASME Journal of Vibrations and Acoustics from 2007 to 2013.

Dr. Zu’s research is focused on mechanical vibrations and dynamics and mechatronics. She has applied her expertise to private enterprise, successfully col-laborating with industry on many research projects, particularly those with a focus on automotive applica-tions. In recent years, she has extended her research to mechatronics areas of biomedical instrumentation and energy harvesting.

She has published more than 300 refereed papers, in-cluding 160 journal papers, and attracted a significant number of grants and contracts from government and industry to support her research.

Dr. Zu has also received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to academia, industry and the engineering profession, including the John B. Stirling Medal from the Engineering Institute of Canada for leadership and distinguished service; the Donald E. Mar-lowe Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for distinguished education adminis-tration; the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honors significant contributions and achieve-ments by Canadians; and the Robert W. Edward A. Stohr

Conferral of Honorary Degree

Edward (“Ted”) Stohr is a highly-regarded expert in information systems and operations research. He has been a faculty member at Stevens Institute of Technology since 2001. He

currently serves as a professor of information systems and program coordinator of the master’s program in business intelligence and analytics in the School of Business.

Prior to joining Stevens, Dr. Stohr was a faculty mem-ber of the Stern School of Business at New York Uni-versity (NYU) for more than 20 years. During this time, he served as chair of the school’s Department of Information Systems and as director of Stern’s Center for Research on Information Systems. He has also held visiting appointments at INSEAD in France, Vienna University of Business and Economics, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Melbourne University.

Dr. Stohr’s research focuses on the development of computer systems to support work and decision-making in organizations. In 1991 he was chair of the prestigious International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS), and in 1995 he became one of the founding editors of both the Communications of the AIS and the Journal of the AIS. In 2000 and 2004, he served on the Master of Science in information systems curriculum development committees of both the AIS (Association for Information Systems) and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). In 2005, he founded the AIS Special Interest Group on Information and Communica-tions Technologies and Global Development, serving as its president for the next five years.

Dr. Stohr’s 16-year tenure at Stevens coincides with the most transformative period in the history of the School of Business. His contributions to the growth and development of the school are profound. As the associ-ate dean for research and academics (2001-2006), he proposed the school’s MBA program and served as its

first program director. In 2005 he initiated the school’s successful effort to achieve accreditation from the most prestigious accrediting body of business schools world-wide – the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) — and has acted as AACSB coordi-nator for the university since that time. In 2012, he proposed the school’s Master of Science in business intelligence and analytics and has served as its program coordinator for the last five years.

Dr. Stohr has also served in a multitude of leadership roles for the university, including chair of the Academic Program and Review Committee (2007-2009), co-chair of the Culture and Governance Committee of the Strategic Planning Committee (2011 - 2012), inaugural chair of the Faculty Senate (2011-2012) and chair of the President’s Committee on Academic and Program Review (2013).

He has published more than 90 scientific papers, including articles in leading management journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Management Information Systems Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information & Management and Communications of the ACM. Addi-tionally, he has served as the chair or co-chair of 29 dissertation committees at Northwestern University, NYU and Stevens. He is the co-editor of four books on information systems and currently serves on the editorial boards of four leading journals in the field of information systems.

Among his many awards and accolades, he has been recognized by Stevens as the Henry Morton Distin-guished Teaching Professor (2012-2013).

Dr. Stohr holds a bachelor of civil engineering degree from Melbourne University, and MBA and Ph.D. degrees in information science from the University of California, Berkeley.

The academic gown and hood dates back to the early 14th century in England. In 1895, representatives of American colleges and universities met at Columbia University and prepared a code regulating the design and wearing of academic

dress in this country. The code was revised in 1932 and again in 1960.

Each member in the procession wears the hood designating the college last attended and degree last received. The hood is worn over the shoulders

and is lined with the official color or colors of the college attended. The color on the edging of the hood, a strip of velvet or velveteen about

two inches wide, indicates the major field of study.

Some of the trimming colors that you will see today include:

Engineering, orange

Science, golden yellow

Humanities, white

Business, drab

Medicine, green

Economics, copper

Social Science, citron

Environmental Science, antique gold

Philosophy, dark blue

Music, pink

Law, purple

Fine Arts, brown

Many of our students will also be wearing a number of other items such as cords and stoles. These represent the many fraternal

organizations and clubs that each student is a member.
