Subject Mathematics Suggested Timing 40 minutes Financial Literacy Objectives At the end of this lesson, students will: identify forms of money; conduct simulated purchases for amounts up to $1,000. Curriculum Expectations Mathematics, Grades 1-8 (2005) Mathematics Number Sense and Numeration • Read and write money amounts to $1000. • Solve problems that arise from real-life situations. • Add and subtract decimal numbers to hundredths, including money amounts, using concrete materials. • Use estimation when solving problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, to help judge the reasonableness of a solution. Assessment Use: Observation Checklist: Classroom Store (Appendix A) Collect: Receipt Templates from sellers (Appendix C) What You Need Have students bring to class pictures of five items from magazines or catalogues that they want to sell during the classroom store activity (or teacher can provide magazines and catalogues for this purpose). Observation Checklist (Appendix A) Chart paper (cut into strips) and markers Blank stickers to use as price tags Play money (Appendix B) Note - if play money is not available, students can draw the bills and coins they would give as change on a small piece of paper. Five receipt templates per student (Appendix C)

Minds On Group WorkProvideastripofpaperandamarkertoeverystudent.

Organizestudentsintogroupsandaskthemtobrainstormdifferentretailstorestheyknowwhichsellproducts(asopposedtoservices).

Haveeachstudentuseamarkertorecordatleastonestorenameonthestripofpaper.

Collectthestripsofpaperand,withthestudents’help,sortstoresintocategories(grocery,clothing,toystores,etc.)bytapingpaperstripsundereachcategoryheading.

Askstudentsiftheyhaveevertriedtosellormarketitemstheyhaveowned,andencouragethemtoelaborateastohowandwheretheydidthis.(Answersmightincludegaragesales,lemonadestands,paperroutes,onlineauctionswithparents,etc.).

Askstudentstoexplainthedifferencebetweenabuyerandasellerandthendefinetheword“retailer”.

Havestudentscommentonanyissuesthatretailersmightneedtoconsiderastheyprepareitemsforsale(moneyforchange,qualityofproduct,pricing,ethicaladvertising).

Explaintostudentsthattodaytheywillbesettingupastorefrontandthateachpersonwillhaveachancetosellitemstotheirclassmatesusingplaymoney. Thelearninggoalsoftheactivityaretothinkabouttheprocessinvolvedinsellingsomethingtothepublicandtopracticemakingcorrectchange.

Action Activity: Classroom Store

Set Up:Arrangestudentsingroupsoffour,andhavethemsetuptheirdesksasastorefront/sellingarea.

Letthegroupsdecidehowtheywilldisplay,organize,andpromotetheitems(images)thattheyhavebroughttosell(e.g.encouragestudentstoposttheirimagesonthewallorposterboard,etc.).

Havestudentsinventastorenameandencouragegroupstocooperateinmakingasign,jingle,ormottotoadvertisetheirstoreanditsitems.

Instruction:Provideguidelinesforpricingitems,andmodelexamplesofhowtomakechangewithbillsandcoinsbyconductingseveraldemonstrationswiththeclass.Explaintheideaofa“float”andhowitisused.Defineandexplaintheterm“transaction”.

Intheirsmallgroups,havestudentsdiscussappropriatepricesfortheiritems.Studentsthenlabeltheirimagesofitemswithpricestickers.Encouragestudentstoselectpricesthatwillrequirethemtomakechange(forexample,$17.50).

Provideeachgroupwithafloatformakingchange.(Suggestion–giveeachgroupashoeboxinwhichtostoretheirfloat/playmoney).Remindthegrouptocounttheirfloatinadvanceofsellingandhavethemremembertheamountorrecorditontheirshoebox.

Recording Transactions:Dividetheclassintobuyersandsellers.Explainthatonehalfoftheclasswillselltheirproductsfirst,whiletheotherhalfwillwalkaroundtheroommakingpurchases.

Provideampleplaymoneytothebuyersandhandoutfivereceipttemplates(AppendixC)tothesellers.

Beforethestoresareopenforbusiness,modeltotheclasshowtorecordtransactionsonthereceipts(AppendixC).Besuretomakeitclearthateachsellermustproduceareceiptforeveryproductsold.

After15minutes,havebuyersandsellersswitchroles.

Consolidation/ Debrief

Helpgroupsaddupthemoneytheymadefromsellingtheiritemsandthenshowthemhowtosubtractthefloattoobtaintheirsalestotal.Havegroupssharetheirtotalswiththeclass.
