A wacky water fountain in the room above our’s broke and filled that room with several inches of water. Naturally, some of that water found its way down to our room. Most of the damage was in the ceiling tiles and a lot of my posters and charts. We have had a dehumidifier running in the classroom for the rest of the week. Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon. Math Highlights: In math, the story of Jack and the Beanstalk continues as Jack discovers another beanstalk loaded with gigantic beans. The children were tasked with measuring the giant beans using Unifix cubes. Ask your child how he/she organized the Unifix cubes to make finding the lengths easier. Reading Workshop Highlights: Our focus in reading has been on summarizing what is most important in a story. The children learned that this will help them to understand the story more. We will continue to practice mapping out the most essential parts of a story and try to include enough information to make sense to someone who hasn't read the story before. Writing Workshop Highlights: For writing, our focus has been on revising our stories to make them sound even better. We talked about how we can add words to give more details, remove words that are not necessary, or change words to make the story more interesting. Ask your child about this/her revisions. Other Highlights: Ask your child about his/her monarch butterfly slideshow. Have they finished it yet? This week, the boys and girls started writing their second grade goals. They will be sharing their ideas for a reading, writing, and math goal at their conference next week. Together, as a team, we will finalize your child’s goals. Congratulations Tyler, our latest Star of the Week. We had fun learning some new and special things about him. Fall Conferences will take place Thursday, October 17th and Friday, October 18th. Remember your child is to attend the conference with you. Ferguson’s Fall Festival will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, October 31st. More information to come. Our classroom snack supply is starting to run low. We would appreciate any donations. Thank you! This & That
