    Modulation in Melody

    Modulation means change of key.

For example, a piece in C major can modulate or change key to G major and then

to F major and end back in the key of C major.

    Modulations make music more interesting.

The piece below is in the key of G major and modulates to D major. How can you

tell its modulated to D major?

    Modulation in Melody

A common modulation in music is to the dominant.

For example if the piece is written in G major, a modulation to the dominant is D

    major. (D is the 5th).

Look at the example below. Notice the modulation to the dominant.

    Modulation in Melody

Another common modulation in music is to the relative key.

For example, C major to A minor or E minor to G major.

Look at the example below. Notice the modulation to the relative key.

    G major to E minor.

    Modulation in Melody

In Theory of Music Fourth Grade, modulations will be limited to dominant and

    relative major or minor.

For example a piece in C major in this grade can modulate to G major (Dominant)

    and A minor (Relative minor).

Its a good idea to make a modulation table.

    KEY DOMINANT RELATIVE MINOR

    F major---------------C major (B natural)-------------------D minor (C#)

If the question asks relationship to original key, this means if the modulation

was to the dominant or relative major/minor.
