Library as Catalyst to Collaborative Instructional-Design Initiatives

Gracefully Dancing the Two-Step: Strategies for Highlighting Librarians as Instructional DesignersKim Hoffman, Michelle Costello, and Corey HaSUNY Geneseo

1WelcomeMore about Michelle using Animoto2

(Kim) As in past presentations we have given on this topic, we would like to introduce you to Michelle, Kim and Corey using some educational technologies.

First, we have Michelle using Animoto (mixing images, music and text to create professional looking trailers or videos) . . . 2More about Kim using Tagxedo

3Write down on a piece of paper one to two summative words that describe Kim based on this image(Michelle) For my description of Kim, I chose to use a word cloud. Many of you may be familiar with the tool, Wordle, but I used the tool, Tagxedo. The cool thing about this tool is you can choose shapes to form your cloud.

Take a look at the image and jot down a few summative words that describe Kim (20-30 seconds). Look at image as a whole; not just individual words.

Call on a few people.

Use of the shamrock shape is purposeful I think of Kim due to her Irish background and green Ireland jacket.3

4More about Corey using Storybird(Kim) To introduce Corey, the third member of our library ID team who couldnt join us today, we used Storybird. This is a storytelling technology where you can create a tale by choosing from many collections of illustrations and setting those pictures to words.

To further enhance the tool, we animated the final product by using Camtasia and then creating a video. We also set the story to one of Coreys favorite composers.4Engage in a think-pair-share exercise in order to reflect on the current status and structure of Instructional Design at their institutions

Inventory existing strengths within the realm of Instructional Design in order to envision (with plans to implement) an outreach plan to share these attributes with your faculty

Respond to various engaging methods shared by the presenters in order to adapt ideas and strategies to fit their respective institutional cultures5Learning Objectives(Michelle) Read these5SUNY Geneseo, a residential liberal arts college

Providing mostly face-to-face classroom instruction

Has seen an exponential growth in the number of online course offerings in the past five years6About SUNY Geneseo

(Michelle) Geneseo is part of the State University of New York system (64 campuses in all with 13 comprehensive colleges of arts and sciences). We are a 4-year school, approx 5000 undergrads, 300 grad students

Very traditional, mainly a teaching college, we pride ourselves on the close relationships between professors and students the annual awards from US News & World Report and Kiplingers highlight the various strengths of SUNY Geneseos close knit community approach

Attempting to keep up with the state of higher education and its lean toward online teaching, Geneseo has seen an administrative push toward increasing our online offerings. Being so tied to the traditional model, there has been resistance on campus to move in this direction.63 courses in 2008 compared to 45 courses in 20127Why a Library ID Team?(Michelle) 7No Instructional Design support on campus8Why a Library ID Team?PresidentAcademic AffairsDean of CollegeInternational ProgramsCITMilne LibraryTLCAdministration & FinanceFinancial AidHuman ResourcesStudent & Campus LifeCareer DevelopmentResidence Life(Michelle)8Collaborating with Other DepartmentsBreaking down barriers Learning togetherIncreased communicationSupporting each otherJoint initiatives9CIT
