The Sri Jinarathana Vocational Training Centre of the Gangaramaya Temple launched Na Sewana five years ago with the objective of conducting workshops for families in the agricultural sector, to provide vocational training for school dropouts in the village of Suriyawawa, Meegahajandura in the Hambantota district and to uplift the standard of living of its residents.

Since 1978, the Sri Jinarathna Vocational Training Centre together with the Gangaramaya Temple has produced many talented individuals. The vocational training centre expanded its services - in addition to encouraging and assisting self-employment - to those working in the agriculture sector. By introducing new strategies, Na Sewana intends to influence the lives of those in need. The current project was launched in the vicinity of the national cricket stadium in Meegahajandura. The project provided training to produce skilled operators of heavy and light vehicles, loaders and caterpillar trucks through its well equipped driving school. Although support from government institutions is very much to be desired, the project has received assistance from the temple, organisations in the area and individuals linked to the programme and committed to its success.

The project has also received the support of DIMO. A dairy farm has also been set up with the help of Fontera, which will be expanded with more cattle, cattle sheds, the use of cow dung for biogas, and the introduction of machines for the purpose of milking cows. The dairy farm is a source of awareness for children in the area, who are educated on the importance of maintaining and caring for cattle in a home-based environment. Na Sewana has also set up an agro farm with the help of Ceylon Tobacco Company (CTC). It functions as a model farm, introducing what is most suitable for that particular area, its soil and temperature. The introduction of a nursery has helped to bring in plants that will ensure a larger harvest in the area. In addition, Na Sewana introduced the herbal garden concept with the planting of medicinal trees that are fast becoming extinct in the country. Farmers in the area can access agriculture-related projects launched by Na Sewana. Na Sewana also took the initiative to educate students in the area in IT and the English language with scholarships given to outstanding students. The fundamental objective of this project is to develop the lives of the people through some means.
