    To the world.Just as our relationships with God and one another should bemarked by love, so should our relationship with the world. Ourimpact on the world should be similar to our impact on oneanotherwe should love it in a transormative way.     1. to hiM (gen. 1:26, jer. 9:23-24).

    In the previous session, we looked at Genesis 1:26-28 as a oundational passage that afrms we werereated in the image o God. We were reated to reet His glory. Lets return to this passage againto see what it tells us about relationships and how we reet God through the way we relate.

    Te rst and most important relationship human beings have is with God. God reated us in Hisimage so that not only would we know and love Him, but also that we might reet His glory andbeauty throughout our lives. We were reated to submit joyully to our creator.

    Youve probably heard the expression, Its not what you know; its who you know. Te rightonnetions with the right people an open all kinds o doors o opportunity. On the other hand,

    without relationships, the doors remain rmly losed. In other words, onnetions matter!We are onstantly tempted to believe that the latest tehnology, or wealth, or love, or beauty,

    or sex is going to make us happy. We take pride in all sorts o things. But the prophet Jeremiahreminded us that all these paths are unsatisying. All the things we boast o are nothing ompared toknowing and relating to the God who made us, or without Him, lie will ultimately disappoint.

    Jesus set the example or lie with God in a busy and distrating world. He would spend time insolitude to pray (Luke 5:16), would rise early to meet God in prayer (Mark 1:35), and would respondto trials and hardship by withdrawing to be alone with God (Matt. 14:13). Tere is mystery in thisGod the Son withdrawing to pray to God the Father. And yet, we an understand this awe-inspiringreality one we remember that Jesus was ully God and ully man. He lived a human lie, and His

    example peretly demonstrates what an ordinary lie o prayerul relationship with God looks like.

    2. to one Another (gen. 1:27; roM. 13:8-10).

    Lets go bak to Genesis 1 again and pik up where we let o. Ater we see how God reated us torelate to Him, we see that He made us in His image to relate to one another.

    God didnt reate us to be alone with Him. He also reated us to relate to one another. Sel-sariing, other-entered love is at the heart o all meaningul relationships. Both men and womenare made in Gods image, and both are given the ommission to rule and reign over reation.

    Most o our dissatisation in relationships is sel-entered, loaked areully in language abouthaving our needs met. Te ounsel o the world enters on getting what you want out o the

    relationships you have. Were advised to subtly manipulate our parents, siblings, and riends intohanging or our satisation. But what i we approahed our relationships with total disinterestin ourselves? What i our relationships were marked by the desire to lay down our own demandsin order to are or others? It would require us to listen well, to truly understand the ones we love,and to die to ourselves again and again. Suh skills would transorm any relationship. I the Lordultivates in us the kind o harater that makes us attentive and empatheti towards others, it willtransorm the dynamis o any relationship.

    Te Bible invites us to ollow christs example, living without a great deal o onern or how itbenets us in the short term. Instead, were told to store up treasures in heaven, knowing that loving

    others and ollowing Jesus is a better way to live than the sel-entered and unsatisying misery thatmarks lie apart rom christ.

    3. to the World (gen. 1:28).

    Te nal ommand in Genesis 1 shows a third aspet o what it means to bear Gods image: werelate in a partiular way to the world. Remember how the passage ends?

    First, notie that our purpose, our work, is tied to the world. For many people, the world is seenonly as a terrible, sin-stained plae, something rom whih we annot wait to esape when weeventually die. Suh a dismissive attitude has ar-reahing onsequenes and is disonneted romGods original intent or us.

    We are embodied reatures, having both a soul and body, immaterial and material parts. Inat, God wanted us to be intimately tied to the earthso muh so that in Genesis 2 he shows usthat were atually ormed rom dust. When death appears in Genesis 3, were reminded that weultimately return to dust. As humans, we are earthly reatures.

    Just as our relationships with God and one another should be marked by love, so should ourrelationship with the world. Our impat on the world should be similar to our impat on oneanotherwe should love it in a transormative way. Tis means a loving stewardship o reation and aloving engagement with the ulture around us.

    Te most loving thing we an do is share the gospel. But a ous on evangelism does not exuse usrom ailing to steward the world well, as Genesis 1 ommands us. can it possibly have been Godsdesire or humanity to oversh speies to extintion, to destroy eosystems with industrial waste,and to deplete entire landsapes in order to exploit resoures?

    Whatever one might believe about our environmental impat (and christians disagree onproposals and details), we should onsider the hoies we make in the light o the responsibility weve

    been given by God to be a good steward over the earthsomething that should be done with love,wisdom, and generosity.

    conclusion

    What should shape all o our relationships? Love. Love o God, love o neighbor, and love othe world around us. It is as Paul says in 1 imothy 1:5 that the goal o our instrution is lovethat omes rom a pure heart, a good onsiene, and a sinere aith. Tis is what the gospelaomplishes when it reates lasting heart hange within a persongenuine, authenti, christ-entered love. And it is beause o this love that one an have a true love or others and the worldaround him.

    As image-bearers, were alled to reet the God who made us. God has loved the world, andloved us, with a transormative, lie-giving love. Tis love, reeted through His people, is notmerely a warm and uzzy eeling, and it ertainly isnt the kind o intoxiating inatuation thatmarks most romane stories. Its a transormative power, leaving deep impat on all that it touhesand hanging it or the better.
