UPCOMING EVENTS Book Week & The Great Book Swap

Are you ready? Tomorrow is our book parade.

Reflecting on this year’s Book Week theme;

“Reading is my Super Power.”

Reading has the ‘power’ to take us to so many places. In the

infants room we have been focusing on quality literature

recommended on the Premiers Reading List, stories that have

transported us to all sorts of places.

In each of the Premiers Reading age divisions, we have over

200 of the books recommended on the list in our library.

It is always a great delight to make sure we are purchasing the

latest and greatest literature for our library and it is lovely

introducing the new books to the students as they too, will be

transported by the “secret power of reading”

We look forward to seeing the student’s favourite books and

characters come to life.

Remember boys and girls, it’s important to remember the name

of your book, the author and the character.

ourselves swapping some favourite reads.

Please make sure you bring in a book or two to add

to the swap table. (Last year there were about 10

books that we acquired for our library!) The idea is,

for the cost of a gold coin, you can go home with a

brilliant ‘new’ book, swapped with one from someone

else.

All the money raised goes to the Indigenous Literacy

Foundation. Our donations help to provide books

and literacy programs to remote communities where

they are needed most.

Snow Trip - written by Sienna

I could barely hear myself as excited kids of stage

3 from the VOSS community gathered around,

waiting to board the buses. Our fourteen hour bus

trip was definitely worth it because after visittng the

amazing Parliament House, we would be arriving

at the Snowy Mountain motel. Well, the hotel

wasn’t that exciting, but in the early morning after,

we set off to the snow fields. I was doing

snowboarding, with some of my class mates.

Snow boarding was amazing on the first day as the

snow was fresh and white. The second day at the

fields was a lot wetter and boarding was more

frustrating. But I loved it all.

After we were all worn out, Mahika, Ratu, Travis,

Sam and myself made an igloo and some mini

snow men.

Back at the motel, we got ready to leave the next

morning, drying out gear and getting a “good

sleep”.

On the way back, we visited the Old Parliament

House, the War Memorial and Questacon. My

favourite part of the snow trip was eating the

snow. Yummy.

Evacuation Drill

As part of the mandatory WHS requirements for

our workplace, we will be conducting an

evacuation drill on Monday 2 September.

2nd hand school uniforms

Have you got any 2nd hand school shirts? Please

drop them into the office. They are always useful

here at school.

Parliament and Civics Education

Rebate Students from our school have recently undertaken

an education tour of the national capital. Students

have been given the opportunity to participate in a

variety of educational programs with a focus on

Australia’s history, culture, heritage and

democracy. The Australian Government

recognises the importance of all young Australians

being able to visit the national capital as part of

their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist

families in meeting the cost of the excursion the

Australian Government is contributing funding of

$60.00 per student under the Parliament and

Civics Education Rebate program towards those

costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school

upon completion of the excursion.

P&C News

Our major fundraiser at the Athletics Carnival has had an awesome result of $3,300. We would like us to acknowledge Thea’s superhuman efforts for us to get there.

There is a Bunnings BBQ slot booked for Saturday 21, September. Kate cannot coordinate or run this one. Someone will be required to put their hand up or it will have to be cancelled. Kate will organise the sausages to be donated, so it’d be coordinating volunteers and the onions etc.

We also raised $292 at the last Bangalow Bowlo in July.

We also need to get a show of hands who can make the Working Bee. The P&C will cater a sausage sizzle for 11am. Aiming for it to be quite a social event. Kids welcome to come and bring bikes etc. We voted at the last meeting where we’d like to spend our hard earned cash and welcome anyone to come to the next P&C with their ideas in week 8.

Please let Kate know if you can help with the Working Bee or Bunnings BBQ asap. I think that’s it! THANKYOU!!

TWITS & Koala Rescue Excursion

Last week whilst the Stage 3 students were at the

snow, the remainder of the school went on a fabu-

lous excursion to the Koala Rescue Centre and the

live NORPA production of “The Twits”. It was fasci-

nating to hear the children’s mixed reviews of The

Twits. From ‘boring’ to ‘so good’, the children did

agree on one thing, they laughed a lot at the fart-

ing! But seriously, that’s what art is about, it chal-

lenges our thinking and our opinions.

The Friends of the Koala were generous with their

time and information. A huge congratulations to

Ceda, who gave a fabulous thank you speech on

behalf of our school. She articulated herself with

great aplomb, showing a great awareness of the

organisations time and role in our community.

Tennis Program

All of the students have been enjoying the tennis

program which is running every Monday for six

weeks. This is possible with money from Sporting

School Grant which we received.

Sienna attends Creative Arts Camp

Recently Sienna attended the Creative Arts Camp at Lake Ainsworth,

Lennox Head. Talented arts students come together from all over the

North Coast schools to showcase their talents. Well done Sienna, for

representing our school. Your artwork is fantastic!
