It was such a big thing back then that news about it was all over the web within 24 hours of Google's announcement. In the two years that followed its release, Google's “Universal Search” would become ingrained in people's minds that many of us are now finding it hard to imagine that there was a time when it wasn't there yet. Just two short years... but, in the computing world, two years is anything but short. Those two years would bear witness to the emergence and proliferation of two websites that spawned a new breed of internet users—those who crave viciously for real-time news and updates. Those two years also saw the race for search supremacy heat up anew as Microsoft attempted to, and still continues to lure users to Bing. But, just as Google has seemed to take all of this in stride, the search giant is at it again.

It's already been two years since Google held its first Searchology press conference (May 16, 2007) where the search giant launched its “Universal Search” which blends various result types (web pages, images, videos, etc.) into its web results page.

On May 12, 2009, Google hosted its second Searchology event on which it announced of a new set of features for its search engine which they referred to as “Search Options”. Google's “Search Options” is a collection of tools that let users refine their results and generate different views, thus enabling them to find what they need faster and easier. When it was launched, “Search Options” enabled users to filter their search by different types of results (videos, forums, and reviews) and by time (recent, past 24 hours, past week, past year). Also, it allowed users to see related searches, a “wonder wheel” view, or a timeline view. On October 1, 2009, Google added more features to its “Search Options”, this time enabling users to:

search for anything that was published within the past hour; specify a specific date range for their search; add or filter out shopping sites from their search results; search only those pages that have already been visited by the user; and see only results from Google's book, blog, and news search tools.

Although there are some people still left wanting for more options, “Search Options” seems to be off to a fairly good start. The Search Options The “Search Options” link appears on a search result page after you do a search on http://www.google.com. The screenshots below shows the result page of a search for the term “Google”, as well as the location of the “Search Options” link (displayed as “Show Options”).

Specific Date Range This allows you to specify a date range for your results. This is particularly useful if you are looking for articles on an event. To specify a date range, simply enter the “start” date and the “end” date in the From and To boxes respectively.

Visited Pages

Page 10: Google Search Options Step By Step

This option allows you to search only those pages that you've already visited before. You need to be logged in for this to work. Also, you need to enable Web History. This is particularly useful if you want to trace back the pages you've visited before.

Not Yet Visited Working opposite of the “Visited Pages” option, the “Not yet visited option” lets you filter out all the pages that you've already visited and gives you results that contain only pages/links which you haven't visited before. Just like “Visited Pages”, you need to be logged in and have “Web History” enabled on your Google account settings.

To enable Web History, go to http://www.google.com/history.

Related Searches This option will provide you with suggestions of what Google thinks are search terms that are related to the search term you used, thus providing you with more options to gain more information.

Wonder Wheel The Wonder Wheel is very much similar to Related Searches such that it displays related search terms to the term you originally used in your search, albeit graphically.

Page 12: Google Search Options Step By Step

Timeline This option clusters together results from the same year and provides a graph showing the volume of materials available from a particular year. You can click on a year in the result page to display only the results from that year.

Images from the Page This option will display an image or two alongside each result link. The displayd images are retrieved from the sites/pages that are included in the search results.

Page 13: Google Search Options Step By Step

Fewer Shopping Sites This option simply keeps shopping sites getting into the results at a minimal.

More Shopping Sites This option will pull more shopping sites into your result page. This is particularly

Page 14: Google Search Options Step By Step

useful when you're shopping online since you don't have to go to the shopping sites one by one anymore.

More Text This option will display more of a page's text on the Google search result page.

Google Hot Trends Google has a tool called Google Trends that allows you to see how popular certain keywords/keyphrases are. Basically, what Google Trends does is it will tell you how often topics/keywords (up to five at a time) are being searched on Google and from where. In addition, Google Trends will also show you how often your topics/keywords appear on Google News stories. This tool can help you a lot determine what people are currently into and what people are currently interested in. Google Trends has been around for quite a while, several years as a matter of fact. And until recently, one needs to go to the Google Trends page to be able to use it. However, Google announced on September 28, 2009 via a blog post on its official blog that it was integrating Google Trends in actual search results. If you're living in the U.S. or Japan and you happen to search for a trend (such as a celebrity who's just been a hot item on the news), chances are you will see the Google Trends graph at the bottom of your search results page such as shown in the
