This dairy farm was established in

the late 1800s.To provide for the

growing herd, they built a 60’x

114’ barn with wooden

stanchions for 100 cows, all of

which were milked by hand.

In the 1850sGerman immigrant settlers came up the Mississippi River. They built the city on a transportation system for shipping wheat which became the nation’s fourth largest.

Dairy farmsThe typical family farm is largely non-existent today; however, this pastoral scene can still be found on a scenic drive in the country.

Today there is a new breed of dairy farmer, gone are the days of the family farm. Most operations are multi-million dollar agri-businesses, just as this put up by an area university to teach dairying to a new generation.

Milk receivingwent from horse-drawn carriages to town to themilkman who made hisregular rounds as either ashipper for the dairy, or receiver for the farmer.

Today milk is transported over long distances in 70,000 gallon polished

stainless steel tanker trailers, trucked by independent contractors for the

farmer and co-operative.

Milk processingwith the commercializationof dairy industry came the necessary quality standardregulations, packaging andpromotion of a perishableproduct.

Today, from what once was a small family concern has become a multi-billion dollar industry of pasteurizing, and homogenizing and further bottling the millions of gallons of milk.

The Red River oxbows through the valley of pre-historic Lake Agazziz and is Minnesota’s most verdant plain ground flat and smooth by

the advancing glacier of the Pleistocene Age.

In the 1850sFur traders were the only inhabitants of this northwestern quarter of the state. In fact it was not even part of the United States until 1863. By 1876 it was another railroad station.

By the 1950sMillions of board feet of lumber had been floated downstream. Now they would float huge grain harvests in this northwestern quarter to the rail yards.
