From the Director Spring is hopping at the library! Our schedule is full of fun events for everyone, from old favorites like Free Comic Book Day to new programs like Blender Bikes and Let’s Make a Mess! For the first time, we’re celebrating National Drop Everything and Read Day, and we’ll be judging cookies during the Oreo Taste-a-thon. We hope you’ll spot something you like in the offerings, and we’ll see you at the library this spring!

March is Reading Month: Frequent Reader Club Help us celebrate March is Reading month in style this year! During the month of March, stop in to the library at least eight times to be entered into a drawing for a grand prize. Participants will receive an old fashioned ‘due date’ card, and will bring that each time they visit for library staff to stamp. Eight stamps and you’re in the drawing! As always, thank you for loving YOUR library!

Newspapers & Nosh Night @ the LibraryMarch 21, 6:00 – 8:00 pm “Extra extra, read all about it!” Stop by for a peek at Imlay City’s history as printed in the pages of our hometown newspaper, the Tri City Times. Special bound editions of the Times dating back to the 1980s will be on hand: flip through and find your favorite businesses, or spot friends and family in photos from days gone by. There’ll be newspaper related activities and games for kids, and snacks too (served on newsprint, of course!)

Book Buttons StationApril 7-13 We had a novel idea for National Library Week this year: a literary themed button station! Stop in any time during normal library operating hours, choose your favorite design, and a staff member will happily help you create a button to show your bookish side. Make it silly, make it serious, make it your own!

D.E.A.R Day: Drop Everything and Read!April 12 It’s Drop Everything and Read Day! (Yes, there is a national day for it!) Your library has comfy chairs and cozy nooks galore- not to mention hundreds of books just waiting for you. But wait, it gets better! To celebrate there will be a small treat and a hot beverage for any person wanting to Drop Everything and Read. Join the library staff as they celebrate one of their favorite days of the year!

Book SaleMay 4 - 11 Grab some new material at another one of our quarterly book sales: fiction, non-fiction, children’s/YA, biographies, A/V material, and much more. Don’t be left without a book or two to read!

Tree House TravelsMarch 11 & April 8, 6:00 PM

Fans of the Magic Tree House series will remember all the fun that Jack and Annie had as they traveled to different places and times. Well, buckle up because now it’s our turn! Join the fun as we explore some of the same destinations through crafts, games, and activities. We’ll visit Viking times on March 11, based on the book Viking Ships at Sunrise. On April 8 we’ll explore the American Civil War, based on the book Civil War on Sunday, with special guests, the Michigan 15th Reenactment Troop.

Blender Bike SmoothiesApril 22, 1:00 – 6:00 PM

This year for Earth Day experience Blender Bikes, the tastiest bit of self-sustained energy that you’re ever likely to encounter! Earth warriors young and old can use the equipment loaned to us by the United Dairy Industry of Michigan. We’ll provide a few simple ingredients, you provide the pedal power, and after a few turns of the bicycle wheels, voilà: a healthy, delicious smoothie powered by you!

Stuffed Animal SleepoverMarch 28 – 29

Calling all loved stuffed animals for an overnight sleepover at the library! Stuffed Animal drop off is from 5:30 to 7:00 pm on March 28. We’ll start by giving each stuffy a name tag, then attendees can listen to a bedtime story followed by tuck in and lights out, and that’s when the fun begins! Pickup is the following morning, March 29 at 11:00 AM, and over a light breakfast we’ll review all the photos and see what our friends got up to in the night!

Let’s Make a Mess!April 24 & May 15, 6:00 PM

Andy Warhol said “Art is anything you can get away with,” so with that in mind: LET’S MAKE A MESS! Wear your favorite “messy” clothes because things could get wild as we find our artistic inspiration with help from Imlay City Schools’ own art teacher extraordinaire, Jill Campbell. We’ll mess around with Paint on April 24 and String on May 15!

Spring Charm Tea with Indigo Lavender Farm April 10, 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Trish Dennis of Imlay City’s Indigo Lavender Farm will be our special guest at this spring’s delightfully scented Charm Tea. Trish will discuss her background and the making of the farm; the history and uses of lavender; its care and maintenance including pruning, harvesting, and processing; and the techniques used to distill it into essential oil. Includes Q&A and sampling of the farm’s own lavender honey! May 4Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s Free Comic Book Day, back for its 17th year, and better than ever! Comics are available on a first come, first serve basis so grab your cape, your utility belt, your lasso of truth, whatever super object you love best and get to the library!
