Summertime at Our Communities

Managed by

AUGUST 2019

From the Desk of the CEO

Rod Burkett

Recently, I was notified that a team member was going to be

receiving national recognition for her accomplishments at an

upcoming conference. A discussion immediately followed

regarding how to celebrate this great honor. The prior day, I

had just read an article on the art of celebrating, written by positive leadership

consultant and happiness guru, JoAnna Brandi. These two happenings

seemed to be so well connected that I felt compelled to share her celebration

mindset:

Most people are good at celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, graduations

and weddings. But the art of true celebration lies in the ability to celebrate

life itself.

Each and every glorious moment.

Celebration begins with recognition, the recognition of accomplishment,

the recognition of failures and the lessons learned. The recognition that

every moment of life has the potential to be celebrate-able.

Even the last.

So today ask yourself, “Did I recognize and celebrate the things that made

me proud? Did I recognize and celebrate the beauty of the life and lessons

I earned?”

The celebration I speak of is not just that of party hats and fancy cakes. It

is the spiritual celebration of all Father/Mother God’s creations and

yours. We are all creators.

Celebrate Every Day!

IN THE NEWS Living Longer and Healthier Lives

Rick Banas

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to hear Dan Buettner speak at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Dan is a fascinating individual. He is a best-selling author; a National Geographic Fellow; and the creator of an Emmy award-winning documentary. He holds three Guinness records for endurance cycling. He once biked from Prudhoe Bay in Alaska down to the tip of Argentina.

Dan talked about discovering the five places in the world where people live the longest . . . and the healthiest and the research as to why this is the case.

The five places include one in the United States - Loma Linda, California as well as locations in Costa Rica, Greece, Japan and Sardinia.

It is interesting to note that among the tips for living a long and healthy life that Dan cited are . . .

1. They keep moving. As they saying goes, move it or lose it. It can be natural movement such as walking.

2. Their life has purpose.

3. Spirituality.

4. Social Connectivity. As Dan says, social connections provide camaraderie and kinships that support healthy behaviors.

More information on Dan’s findings can be found in two books - “The Blue Zones” and “The Blue Zones Solution.”

WELLNESS Understanding & Managing Anxiety

Stephen Harris

Anxiety is our body’s natural response to stressful or demanding situations. Identifying the situations that trigger a stress response is the first step to effectively coping with stress and reducing anxiety. Everyone has different triggers, and you may need to reflect on what situations cause you the most stress. Here are some common triggers:

Loss of control

Life changes

Unexpected events

Environment

People

Techniques that can help you escape from the stress response:

Question your thought pattern– Negative thoughts can take root in your mind, and we begin to tell ourselves a story. These distortions can be challenged. Ask yourself if they’re true and how you can take control of the situation.

Deep breathing– Exhale completely, then breath in deeply (completely filling your lungs) over four seconds, hold your breath in for seven seconds and the breathing out over eight seconds. Repeat four times. This is the 4-7-8 breathing technique developed by Dr. Andrew Weil.

Exercise– All forms of exercise can reduce anxiety by activating your brain’s release of hormones that boost your feeling of wellness.

Journaling– Journaling allows you to clarify your thoughts and feelings, thereby gaining insight which can counteract many of the negative effects of stress.

Recognizing a problem is the first step toward solving it. By beginning to identify and understand the sources of your stress, you've taken the first step in learning to better manage it. Stress is a part of life and we may never eliminate it; however, learning ways to handle it helps us live longer happier lives.
