DANIEL LAVERDURE Author

A born painter, illustrator and graphic designer, animator, author, storyteller, and hobbyist gardener, Daniel Laverdure is full of surprises. He lives in a charming house near a small river, surrounded by forest, wildlife and birds where he imagines many projects and dreams that he intends to realize. Daniel writes for young people because he never knew how to age. He writes for the pleasure it gives him and for the moments of sharing with his readers. He seeks to entertain, arouse curiosity, inform and provide experiences that go beyond words. Since Ma Mère Poule, a novel for children aged seven and over, was published in 1999 by Éditions Michel Quintin, several other stories have emerged under his colorful pen. Daniel has written nearly fifty books, most of which he says he has read. His stories are enriched with a touch of emotions, intrigue, humour, sarcasm and irony and are, in a secret way, a commentary on our society. Each of his books are small moments that, he hopes, could make forests grow into great adventures. In 2010, he won the Personality Award presented by the Association Québécoise des Salons du livre. When Daniel Laverdure retires… he will continue to do exactly the same thing.

JEAN-PHILIPPE MORIN Illustrator

Jean-Philippe Morin began his foray into graphic novels in 1993 when he published Barnabé et compagnie (Barnaby and Friends) through Éditions Studio Montag. This first comic book won him the l’Espoir québécois award for most promising Quebec author during the 6th edition of the Quebec francophone comic book festival (FBDFQ). Over the years, he has illustrated various comic strip columns and series for magazines like Safarir, Délire, Pignouf and the prestigious Spirou magazine. He also illustrated the comic series La Tribu (The Tribe), which is scripted by Lapuss’.

ennuyant !

Story1

1A Really Odd Wolf

Once upon a time

there was a wolf.

A BIG, bad wolf of

course. He loved

FRIGHTENING

little pigs and a little

girl clad in red who

5

didn’t know the way

to her grandma’s.

But this wolf was

not very lucky in

6

life and his stories

always

ENDED

BADLY.

So, this is the story

of another wolf.

He’s a rather

SPECIAL

wolf, this one.

7

FIRSTLY, his

name is Gonzague.

Nobody’s ever heard

of a wolf named

Gonzague.

8

SECONDLY,

Gonzague spends

much of his time

day-dreaming

and spotting oddly

shaped clouds.

He also tries to

count the number

9

of ants as

they enter or

leave their anthill

and name each

one.

THIRDLY, this

wolf loves lying

in the fresh grass

to breathe in the

10

appetizing scent

of dew-soaked

dandelions, violet-

flowered clovers,

and blue-tinged

daisies. And yes!

Gonzague is a

vegetarian wolf.

12

Why tire yourself

out chasing after

hare and deer?

EAT ING like them

is much better! It’s

delightful and

so gooooood.

“Today, it’ll

be a salad of

13

yellow violets

with nuts

or even

fern

leaves

seasoned with

thistle

FLOWERS.”

14

Our budding chef

is very creative and

concocts all sorts

of recipes guided

by imagination and

appetite.

Unfortunately, his

mother insists that

her cub eat like the

other wolves do.

15

She always tries to

convince him that

he’s got his menus

mixed up.

16

“Listen, son! A

good wolf must eat

all his MEAT, without leaving any

leftovers, and lick

his chops after each

meal.”

Gonzague just

smiles at her and

then runs off to

17

pirouette

around a flowery

meadow. His mother

claps her forehead

with her right

pawpaw and wonders

what she did to

deserve such a

pea-brained son.

18

But it’s bigger than

him, he can’t help

but love plants.

He even has

a cactus

19

collection. He says

it’s convenient

for scratching your back!

Naturally the other

wolves in the pack

look at Gonzague

sideways.

At first, they thought

20

he would change.

But time has passed

and Gonzague has

not changed. The

elder wolves

have become

annoyed by his

behaviour, which

shows no respect for

TRADITION!

21

Soon, everyone

has had enough

of watching this

carnivore

caring for his

garden and roam

the woods in search

of some tender

mushrooms

or wild strawberries.

22

Every day, there’s

a wolf, especially

among the younger

23

ones, that mocks

him mercilessly.

— Hey

cabbagehead!

You’re completely

out to lunch!

— He looks like he’s

got squash

for brains!

24

— Hey, Gonzague!

Are you ashamed

of your roots?

Some even

throw tomatoes at him:

— Here, Gonzague!

Come reap what

you sow.

25

But Gonzague pays

no attention to these

bitter jokes,

they won’t fill his

belly. He prefers

instead to continue

his tastings.

He believes his

fellow cubs are

26

simply a little

jealous.

To know the end,

ask for the

original version.
