Island Dog ProgramHighlight on Rescued Goldens from Puerto Rico

Meet Charlie (formerly Gallant)

I first heard about Charlie (formerly Gallant) in early March 2014. I found the note the other day that had information from my conversation with his foster mom; he gets into the trash, he counter surfs, he has some anxiety, etc. I knew I was going to need to position this carefully with my husband.

We did our meet and greet on Sunday, March 9th. We brought our golden boy, Duke, with us. He and Charlie, being the same age, were instant friends. I was smitten from the start, but my husband was initially hesitant; he wasn’t sure he was physically ready to help train an exuberant 18 month old golden retriever. I was willing to take on the heavy lifting at the beginning to help ease Charlie into our lives, and I brought Charlie home March 10th.

I had the perfect plan and timeline in place for “fixing” Charlie. It started that very first day when I began introducing him to all these wonderful new things (the vet, the walk by the loud construction equipment and a temperament assessment at the doggy daycare I used). I enrolled him in a group obedience class and felt very proud of how happy he was going to be now that he was safe. I only forgot one thing; Charlie didn’t know he was safe. He just knew he was in a new place with different people and new surroundings. Charlie promptly shut down on me within three weeks, and I realized I was in over my head. Once I really thought about it, I realized my actions weren’t supporting my ultimate goal of helping Charlie to feel safe and that it was OK to trust us. Things went more smoothly after that. Yes, he counter surfs and still has some other behaviors, but none of that matters. He gives the best kisses and loves to snuggle. He looks at you with all the love in the world shining from his eyes. He’s taught us there is a different way to view “success”.

If you have an AGaG rescue from Puerto Rico, we would love to hear from you. E-mail us at [email protected] GENEROUS SUPPORTERS

BELLA

She was one of many stray dogs on the streets of Puerto Rico. To add to her dilemma, she was also pregnant. Her living conditions did not bode well for her future or that of her puppies. She instinctively sought a hidden spot to nest and safely deliver her five little ones. Fortunately, Love Puerto Rico Goldens Rescue found this young family and cared for them until the puppies were old enough to travel and join As Good as Gold. One of the puppies was adopted in Puerto Rico, and then Bella flew to Chicago with her remaining brood. At O’Hare airport they were welcomed into the loving arms of the AGaG transport team. From there, this precious cargo was placed in our volunteer team’s Back Seats and transported to their intake vet exam where two year old Bella passed all tests with flying colors. Soon Miss Bella was on the move again when she stepped aboard our volunteer pilot’s Piper Turbo-Arrow airplane at Lewis University’s airport in Romeoville and took her first class seat for a flight headed to Champaign, Illinois. When the plane touched down, this high flyer met her new Foster Mom. With her five puppies safely in their forever homes, Bella was now free to begin the Tale of her new solid gold life.

From the start, Bella has been the perfect guest. She hasn’t had any accidents in the house and never touches items that don’t belong to her. She has steadily become more relaxed and playful since arriving at her foster home. Grey Goose is her favorite toy, but she is careful not to latch on to the squeaker because the odd sound it emits frightens her! The offer of a game of tennis ball keep-away or a tug competition with her sock is always met with enthusiasm. She realizes that car rides may hold the promise of a trip to the dog park, and she eagerly jumps into the vehicle where she always tries to assume the shotgun position.

Bella absolutely loves people and gets very excited when she meets someone new. She can also be very silly around other dogs but is cautious when ap proaching larger breeds. It is obvious that Bella has not had much practice walking on leash since she strongly pulls when she wants to get closer to some thing or someone who interests her. This girl is definitely a work in progress! At bedtime, Bella willingly settles into her open door crate which seems to be her safe spot to snooze the night away. Afternoon naps are spent relaxing in any square of sunshine she can find throughout the house. Her foster mom finds that Bella is the perfect combination of goofy, friendly, and affectionate all rolled into one beautiful petite Golden.

Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. There are no rainbows

without a cloud or a storm. -J.H Vincent-

FOSTERING A FEARFUL DOG

In our February newsletter, Tails of the Backseat told us about Joy, who was relinquished by her breeder-owner and came to As Good as Gold. Joy is a golden mix who is described as a “fearful dog”. As Good as Gold has noticed we have been getting many more dogs that have this type of behavior disorder. These fearful dogs often arrive to us “shutdown”, mean-ing that they will not eat, go outside on their own, drink water, or socialize at all with humans. Foster homes must give these dogs a secure, loving, patient space where they can begin to learn what a golden life really can be. A requirement of these foster homes is they must have other dogs that are friendly and well-socialized. These mentor dogs are the prime reason the fearful dogs can begin to open their eyes and hearts. The first few weeks fearful dogs usually stay in a safe space, which can be an x-pen area, a blanket in the corner, a space on the couch, etc. It is a quiet place, but a place where they can observe family life. As they begin to bloom, they start joining the family’s activities. It can take weeks, or it can take months. Our fearful dogs meet Dr. Bennett, a veterinarian behaviorist, who advises the foster homes on techniques to help the dogs in their journeys. Medication is often prescribed. The joy of fostering these dogs is participating in the phenomenal behavior bloom that takes place. Whether slow or fast, they do begin to trust humans again. They cuddle, they play, they walk, and soon, they run with the wind and then they find their forever homes. It is such a privilege to be able to walk this journey with them. We need more foster homes that are willing to take this walk with a fearful dog. Support members are at your side the entire journey. If you are interested, please let us know!

It takes a lot of courage and trust to look past what you have been through and trust someone.

A Golden Book Review By: Carol Giambalvo

Book review: DECODING YOUR DOG by Carol Giambalvo, Education Coordinator

Have you been searching for a reference book on dog behaviors? I am referring to the times when you really can’t understand the behavior your dog is displaying, and can’t find a good reason why, nor how to remedy it. Or are you a foster home that just took in a dog that needs housetraining 101? You can read all about that subject in Chapter 4.

This book comes highly recommended by Dr. Sara Bennett, As Good as Gold’s Veterinary Behaviorist. It is not a difficult read either, and you can choose to read the entire book, or just the chapters for which you have questions. I can guarantee you will find useful information in the book, no matter if you are a beginner owner of a dog, or very experienced dog handler. Each Chap-ter is written by different Veterinary Behaviorists.

Here are the Chapters of the book, with explanation:

1. Can’t We Just Talk? Learning to “Speak Dog.”2. Choosing your New Best Friend. How to Find the Best Match for You and Your Puppy.3. Creating a Mensa Dog. What Learning Really is, and How Dogs Learn.4. Housetraining 101. Do It Here, Do It Now.5. Tools of the Trade. Humane and Safe Training Tools.6. School Days. Practical Advice on Getting from Puppy to a Dog.7. I Know They’re Normal Behaviors, but How Do I Fix Them? Common Problems That Can Drive any Dog Owner to Howl.8. Lassie and Timmy: Kids and Dogs. Creating a Family That Works.9. All Dogs Need a Job. How to Keep Your Dog Happy and Mentally Healthy.10. Aggression Unleashed: Do Dogs Mean to be Mean? If Aggression Leads to More Aggression, How Do You Respond?11. Loyalty Gone Overboard: Separation Anxiety. The Velcro Dog Dilemma.12. I Know It’s Going to Rain, and I Hate the Fourth of July. Dogs Who Are Phobic About Sound.13. Tail Chasing, Leg Licking—Can’t You Stop? Compulsive Behaviors.14. Dogs with an AARF Card: Growing Old with Grace. Old Dogs Should Learn New Tricks.

Besides these very interesting topics, the book also contains a Glossary and an Appendix. It is available through AmazonSmile.com (make sure you choose As Good as Gold for the Smile rewards!)

SUCCESS STORY: Dena

GOLDEN TALES - VOLUME 15, ISSUE 1 www.asgoodasgold.org 11

When Dena showed up as a stray at Chicago Animal Care and Control several years ago, AGaG agreed to take this frightened dog into the family. With limited vision and a fearful nature, she was passed up by many at the shelter.

This petite girl’s background is probably golden and collie … a combination which only enhances the wonderful temperaments of both breeds: intelligence, sweetness, sensitivity and faith-fulness to family. She has beautiful coloring and has ears that epitomize her curious playful nature. Dena was very stressed and anxious when she arrived at her foster home. She slowly learned to trust her foster mom and some of her friends who worked tire-lessly to help Dena gain confidence. Slow introductions, plenty of treat rewards, and allowing Dena to make friends on her own terms was the key to winning her heart.

Dena completed several classes of obedience training while in foster care and proudly posed wearing her mortarboard at gradu-ation. She loved to pass the day playing in her back yard, taking long walks with her foster mom, and just relaxing while chewing her Nylabones and deer antlers.

After almost 5 years in foster care, and several families passing up this sweet girl, Dena’s dreams finally came true. She has found her forever home! Dena’s adoptive mom is very happy with her sweet companion and shared an update on how Dena is adjusting to her new home:

“Dena has adjusted to being in my quiet life. Every morn-ing she has to smell the whole yard to see if there are any foreign new odors. The same goes for our walks in the woods. When I go out to the store she is always glad to see me when I return. She is my shadow now, always right be-hind me as I walk from room to room … even the bathroom that she was afraid of in the beginning. She sleeps beside my bed all night. We are working on giving up a toy when I say drop it. This will be a long process. It only works if there is a treat in my hand because food is her great moti-vator. Loud noises do startle her especially when I sneeze. She will jump up and look around with her ears perked up wondering what that was. Dena is not so much a snug-gler, but a she likes to lean on me and look up with her big brown eyes. She only barks when a squirrel appears too

close to the patio door. All I can say is so far so good.”

This is truly a very happy ending for a very sweet girl and shows that good things really do come to those who wait! Congratulations to Dena and her forever family.

AVAILABLE GOLDEN SPOTLIGHTMeet Horton!

Squirrels have no place in my yard! I sit in wait on the deck until one of those chattering critters comes down a tree trunk. I can spot them from a distance and I give chase. When I first arrived at As Good as Gold, they thought that my eyesight was either badly com-promised or I was nearly blind due to Keratoconjuctivitis (KCS) which is a condition of decreased tear production. Luckily, my problem was apparently discovered early enough before permanent damage was done. My foster parents have been vigilant in administer-ing my eye medications and my sight has greatly improved. The doctor said my present vision can be compared to needing reading glasses! She is hopeful that my eyesight will continue to improve over time, but I will probably always need to medicate my eyes to prevent inflammation.

The back yard is my nirvana and I love to dart around and chase one of my canine foster siblings. Sometimes I can’t help myself and I bark at the neighbor’s dog as a way to greet him and encourage him to play. I don’t know how I feel about c.a.t.s. Occasionally I will also bark at the resident kitty, but I usually just ignore her. I am not sure what to do with

toys, but watching the other dogs interact with these foreign objects, I am sure I will learn to enjoy this exercise called “play”.

Where stairs were once an enigma, I have learned to ascend and descend them during the day, but I am a little reluctant to navi-gate them in the dark. Consequently, I choose to sleep downstairs on the couch overnight. I enthusiastically wag my tail while greeting my family from the bottom of the stairs when I hear the first sounds in the morning.

My foster dad says that I am submissive, but I prefer to describe myself as a sweet trusting guy who is a non-combative. I love being close to my humans and find that cuddling on the couch, resting my head on an outstretched arm or a welcoming lap, is as close to paradise as I can imagine.
