TERM 2

2018

GOLDEN QUILL - PH

This term our Preps have been investigating weather in our

world. We have written information reports about different

types of weather and Jude wrote an excellent report about

thunderstorms. His handwriting is very neat and he makes

excellent spelling attempts for all words. He always tries hard

to include boundary punctuation in his sentences but he has

also included an apostrophe in the word ‘there’s’.

Congratulations Jude, you are Prep H’s Golden Quill

winner for this term!

JUDE V

Golden Quill - Prep M

This term, Hugo has made impressive progress with his writing. Hugo shows great care when forming his letters and

ensures he writes his letters neatly and on the line. It has been great to see the enthusiasm that Hugo demonstrates

toward every writing lesson and his eagerness to write unfamiliar words. Well done on a great term of writing

Hugo! Hugo has chosen this piece of writing as his favourite for

this term. He has written an information text about daytime.

Hugo M

Congratulations Emma!

This term Foundation students have been focusing on Information

Reports. Emma was able to provide a piece of information related

to Day and Night. She has made wonderful progress with her

writing this term. She correctly forms letters of the alphabet and

writes on the line. Emma consistently uses capitals and full stops to

show when she is writing a sentence. She spells common words

correctly and stretches words to record the sounds she hears.

Sensational effort Emma!

Prep S

Well done Kevin who is the Prep S Golden Quill award winner for Term 2, 2018. Kevin produced an excellent Information Report on Day Time. Kevin has worked diligently on his writing this term and has seen great success. His attention to detail with his capital letters, full stops and spaces are to be commended.

Way to go Kevin!

Golden Quill - 1/2G

The grade one and two students wrote

persuasive letters to the teachers trying to

convince them that hatching chickens at school

would be a great idea. They were all so

convincing that it happened!

Matthew has been really working on using strong

persuasive language and appealing to the

emotions of his audience.

MATTHEW O

Dear Miss Kealey,

I think I am desperate to have them at school. They

are so cute we couldn’t resist them.

We will care for them forever. We will be the best

babysitter every day.

We could have the best colour ever!

I have to have them because they are really cuddly

and cute.

From

Matthew

Congratulations to Sofia for being the recipient of the Golden Quill

award for 1/2H!

Sofia has applied herself diligently to all writing tasks this year. With

developing structure in both narratives and persuasive texts, a

personal goal has been including descriptive language across all her

writing. The following piece is a persuasive text, aimed at

convincing Mrs Clark and Mrs Craig to rent a chicken incubator for

the school. She included a range of descriptive phrases and

persuasive devices.

Well done, Sofia!

Dear Mrs Clark and Mrs Craig,

We need an incubator! It must be outstanding or it won’t be

cozy for the animals. You wouldn’t want that, would you?

We need an incubator because it helps our environment and to

help make animals and plants grow.

It helps up to learn about animals. If you won’t let us learn

about animals, that would be unfair, don’t you think?

It would be adorable when we see the animals grow. I think an

incubator would make us feel warm and fuzzy but if that

doesn’t happen I will leave this school and I’m serious!

Do you think people would come to this school if we don’t have

one? No! This school wouldn’t be a good school! I want this

school to be the best school

ever in the entire universe.

That is why we really, really

need an incubator.

Golden Quill Award - 1/2K

This term, students in the Junior Homestead were lucky enough to attend swimming lessons at PARC. When we returned, Darcy wrote

a fabulous recount of our adventure!

Darcy has thrived in writing this semester, writing page after page, constantly astounding us with her strong language and ability to

engage her reader! Congratulations Darcy on an incredible effort. I am so proud of you!

Darcy

On Monday 1/2K and 1/2M went swimming at PARC.

We went inside and sat on the wall. When we got in the pool we did freestyle. Then we did one armed paddle. We got out of the pool. I was woozy!

Then we got changed into our uniform fast because we wanted to win the race against the boys. We won five days in a row!

Next we got on the bus. In five minutes time we were back at school.

I had a great time!

Golden Quill - 1/2M

This term, the junior school students have worked hard to

develop a range of persuasive, recount and detailed informative

texts. Charlee has proven her writing abilities throughout a range

of impressive writing pieces that all present ambitious vocabulary,

effective punctuation choices and a range of sentence structures.

The following piece is a carefully written persuasive piece of

writing convincing the principal to let us have a chicken incubator

in the Junior Learning Centre. I am very proud of Charlee’s efforts

and am delighted to be rewarding her with this terms Golden

Quill award, as she truly deserves it.

Well-done, Charlee!

Charlee

Dear magnificent Mrs Smith and fabulous Mr Long,

I believe the good people of F.H.P.S MUST get an

awesome, brilliant, nice and comfy chicken

incubator.

We will learn how chickens hatch and about

where they come from.

Do you want us to be sad and leave the school?

We need an awesome, brilliant, nice and comfy

chicken incubator.

Are you thinking no thanks? Well they’re good

for learning in all subjects.

Please oh please! I beg you!!! I am so upset that

we don’t have one already.

From your

sad, upset

and

heartbroken

student,

Charlee.

Writing style

Persuasive

Presents a point of view with supporting evidence.

Is often used to influence opinion or convince the reader of something.

Writing task

Persuasive writers have flourished in the Middle Homestead this term. Forming an opinion and developing a sentence to support that stance is a very difficult task. Students in the Middle Homestead have been very thoughtfully and forcefully forming arguments.

From healthy living to country verses city living, our writing has focussed on the issues that affect our students and community. Our Golden Quill winner chose to take on the age old battle; cats verses dogs.

Awesome author

This terms Golden Quill author was chosen for the significant improvements in her writing.

Her ability to focus on goals and keep on improving has been remarkable. With satisfaction, 3/4M’s Golden Quill recipient is:

Dogs are better than cats Do you think cats are better than dogs? Well think again, dogs are so much better than cats. Dogs are better than cats because dogs are more enthusiastic. Cats just sit around all day. Dogs love their walks, so they get you and your animal fit. You can train your dog so they can settle down around people. They can learn new tricks. You can command them to do all their tricks to show everyone what they have learnt with you. If you have a cat, you definitely need to get a dog. Enjoy playing with your new dog and have fun! Remember to feed it, play with it and take it for walks. By Kiera.

Izaac has been award the 3/4O Golden Quill for consistently trying

his best during our writing sessions. This term Izaac has been

exploring new adjectives to use in his writing. He is always one of

the first to get started and endeavours to complete his writing to a

high standard in the time allocated. Keep up the fantastic work in

Semester 2 Izaac!

This semester one of the 3/4’s focuses has been on poems.

Students have had the opportunity to create several different

kinds of poems. The following are two of the poems that Izaac

created, a cinquain on Wetlands and an acrostic on Spring.

Cinquain

Wetlands

Muddy and dirty

Digging flowing and crashing

I love swimming in the river

Quagmire

Acrostic

Signs of life appear from the icy ground.

People rush to play in the sun.

Roses, tulips and dandy lions flower.

In spring there’s so much rain it’s marvellous.

Never ever pick the beautiful flowers.

Great time to enjoy the fresh air.

GOLDEN QUILL—5/6D

Benniton was my choice for Golden Quill this term because he excels at

including so many of the writing skills and strategies we teach in his

writing. Benniton was new to our school this year and I have watched him

strive to perfect his writer’s voice.

Benniton’s persuasive piece on ‘Public transport is it the way to go?’

includes a number of persuasive devices to convince the reader to use

public transport. His thesis or opening statement clearly states the main

issue and is followed by a series of ideas and a concluding statement.

Benniton uses high level connectives, rhetorical questions, facts and a call

to action in his conclusion.

Well done Benniton on creating such an amazing piece of writing. Keep up

the great work.

Benniton M

Public transport - is it the way to go?

by Benniton

Often people use their own car to get from place to place. Have you

heard of public transport? It’s a vehicle that is available for everyone.

There are all kinds of public transport such as trains, bus and a taxi.

If you didn’t have a car what would you use to go to work? When you

don’t have enough money to buy a car, you can go on public transport

because it’s really cheap. For example to travel around Melbourne it’s

only $8.

Furthermore, when you miss a stop the bus has a red button that you

can press and the bus will then stop so you can go out of the bus. The

bus will stop after you press the button.

Nevertheless, it’s available everywhere. There’s at least 7 bus stops in

town, you turn around the corner you can see a bus stop so it’s

available EVERYWHERE!

To sum it up the cost and availability is amazing. Driving a car for so

long, you will get tired. But public transport you can enjoy the

outstanding view. So go out and enjoy the amazing view.

GOLDEN QUILL - 5/6L

Aidan was selected for Golden Quill Award this term because of his amazing piece of persuasive writing.

He has included the following things to persuade his audience:

Rhetorical questions Facts and statistics

Challenging stereotypes

He also used some great connectives in his text.

Well done Aidan on a big improvement in your writing!

Aiden A

Equal rights for women

Is it fair that women do not get paid the same amount as men? Is it fair that

women aren’t allowed to be a leader? Is it fair that women are not allowed to

play in some AFL teams? I believe that women should be treated the same as

men in life.

Firstly, men and women are all human but different genders. They do

everything the same, but they don’t get paid the same. In fact they get paid

about 18% less. I believe men and women should be equal at work.

Also, there is no such thing as boy and girl stuff.

Men can play netball and women can play

football. Men can like pink and purple and

women can like red and blue. Men can like

Barbies and women can also like Hot Wheels.

There is no such thing as girl and boy stuff.

Lastly it is not fair because men get paid more than women. (e.g.) men get

payed more for umpiring and playing in the AFL. I think it’s unfair because men

and women should be equal.

Treating men and women as equal is

important because we all must be fair

in life.

Golden Quill - 5/6V

In the senior homestead we have been exploring the power of our individual perspectives when viewing a visual

stimulus. Using the ‘National Geographic Photo A Day’, the students have learned that a picture may tell a

thousand words but it is them, who have the wonder and skill to paint those words.

Taylah took this task in her stride and in a 1-minute quick write challenge she let her imagination run wild, evoking descriptive language that builds tension. Taylah ran with the words that entered her mind and as a result created a poem that builds the tension of a poignant narrative.

Congratulations Taylah!

Taylah M

Like the wind

They run like the wind, as the corners bend. Just them and themselves against the world.

‘Where are they going?’ Escaping without knowing. Where you’re going to end up. Wishing they have

luck. As they look behind… not a farm in sight.

Keep running! It’s coming! Keep going! Running with no air… until it was there. A GREAT

BROWN HARE. One by one they all fall… because of a creature so

small? Awoken by the roar of a car, they find

themselves each with a scar. Thump, thump. The rabbits come.

Time to run like the wind.
