SGM adopts ammendments

Special General Body Meeting held on th

28 October,2017)

The SGM attended by 104 members,

adopted the following important

ammendments among many others

after an elaborate deliberations and

discussions:

“Termites have been considered as notorious pests of agricultural and forest crops in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. They are social, polymorphic insects living in small to large colonies. The colony is exhibited with four castes such as workers, soldiers and functional reproductives like king and queen. Each of their body is well suited for a specific function. Association of termites with human activities is well known, as they are serious pests of Agricultural crops, forest plantations and woodworks of the buildings” said Dr. Rajagopal Former Dean (PGS), UAS, Bengaluru.

He was delivering a lecture “Management of th

Termites in building structures” on 12 July 2018 at IAT, Bengaluru.

In his very intersting pictorial presentation on the Fascinating life of termites and their management in Building structures, Dr. Rajagopal added that the termites have been classified into mound building, subterranean nest building and arboreal nesting. They build variety of mounds with a striking architecture of their own design of both externally and internally. Both symbiotic and non symbiotic fungus growing termites are found in the nature. They could digest the cellulose by virtue of their intestinal Protozoa and bacteria which comparable with ruminants.

Terminate Termites, don't get fascinated by their life style - Dr. Rajagopal

Dr. Rajagopal further explained that the termites are very well distributed in Red soils, sandy loams, lateritic, mixed red and black soils and they are free from the continuously irrigated as well as deep black soil regions. Buildings can be safe guarded against termite damage through the efforts in the planning stage of construction. Preventive measures are quite effective and will prevent the future damages. Both pre and post construction treatments are to be followed in combating termite damage to the buildings. He also threw light on many long range experiments have been conducted under open field conditions at UAS, Bangalore. Destruction of the mounds near the site and removal of all root debris, stumps and other cellulosic materials. Many insecticides have been tested under the newly designed “Ground Board Test” and also direct application of chemicals to the construction stage. Fumigation can be taken up for dry wood feeding termites with Methyl bromide.

Mr. K. Krishnappa, Secretary, extended a warm welcome to the audience while Mr. Siddaraju, Chairman, Knowledge Enhancement Sub-committee introduced the speaker and also the subject. Dr. G. Eswarappa, Vice President, IAT Presided over & Mr.R.Ramamurthy, Joint Secretary, IAT rendered the vote of thanks.

Golden Jubilee Year 1968-2018

One of the best agriculture scientists Karnataka had ever

seen who has left his own impressions in the national &

internationalscenes, Dr. R. Dwarkinath is no more. He thbreathed his last on 29 Sept, 2018. He was 93.

With his health waxing & waning, Dr. Dwarkinath still kept clarity of his

thoughts intact. This was noticed by me when I interviewed him for “Krishi

Tantrajna” issue of Jan-Mar, 2017. A legendary agricultural technocrat,

Dr. Dwarkinath was mincing no words while arguing & working for the

welfare of the farmers.

As the news of his sad demise spread, condolences poured in from IATns and

rich tributes were paid to the departed soul.

Remembering his contribution to IAT as its past president joins all the IATns

in mournig his absence and resultant advises.

S.N. Lakshminarayana

Editor, Krishi Tantrajna

“Extremely sorry to hear about the sad passing away of our

former VC and a farmer committed Extension Scientist.

He was a VC when we were students. I remember the farewll

we gave him as students when he cut short his tenure to join

an international assignment.

Subsequently, I had the fortune of interacting with him in

Odisha, when he and Dr Sethu Rao would come as advisors on

DANIDA related Extension. Both of them are well known in the

domain of Extension and as committed to welfare of farmers”

Ashok Dalwai

Dr. Dwarkinath, the past President of IAT, the

past Director of Agril and the past VC of UAS-B is

no more. A great soul who guided agricultural

development in the state with unwavering zeal,

committment and passion - an unsung hero of

Green Revolution. Dr. Dwarkinath had this rare

quality of combining technological pragmatism

with unparalleled empathy for the farming

community. A man who could truly claim, I

have lived; he did his best, and beyond, for

humanity.
