Today, Karen is back at the California Energy Commission in the final months of a two-year contract to lead the devel-opment of the Load Management Rulemaking. In this role, Karen has collaborated with state agencies, industry, non-profits, trade associations, research organizations, electric utilities, and the public to amend the CEC’s Load Manage-ment Standards with the goal of designing a statewide system for the publication of time-dependent rates to enable mass-market demand flexibility through customer-automated price response.

preSentation Summary: Karen’s research covers a range of topics related to load flexibility, including customer-automated load shifting of HVAC in response to time-varying prices. Her presentation will provide results from several precooling studies with 15-minute compressor load data indicating significant potential for load shifting. On a statewide scale, such efforts can help decrease both carbon emissions and the cost of building operations.

    president’s message FeBrUarY 2021

    Hello Golden Gate ASHRAE Members!

This month, I want to talk to you on a more personal level. I want to talk to you all about

    mental health.

We are now hitting the one-year mark since the beginning of COVID-19 in the United States.

And my goodness, what a year it has been…

At first, we were all inconvenienced, thinking the government needs to figure this disease

out quickly, return to normality within a few months. Now we know there is no quick fix,

even the vaccines are taking an immense amount of time to roll out.

Personally speaking, I don’t think I fully comprehended the mental and emotional impact

of COVID 19. I figured, I’d hunker down, along with everyone else and we’d all get through

it, in one way or another. Sure, I was getting a little sick of being cooped up with my cell

mate, er, I mean soul mate, but it’ll be over soon enough. Now with more reports of more

transmissible COVID-19 variants, it appears that our shelter in place journey will remain for longer than we had hoped.

With that being said, and I believe this whole heartedly, that our ASHRAE Chapter is more than just an engineering group, we

are a community of associates, colleagues and friends. And every member truly means something to this community. We would

like to create more opportunities for members to connect online, so if you have ideas or have attended a cool event lately, please

reach out to our Membership Promotion Chair- Sanjil Karki with any suggestions.

If you find you’re struggling with your mental health during this time, there are outlets, from virtual mental health consulta-

tions through Sutter Health and John Muir, to something as simple as meditation practices using apps like Calm or Headspace.

I know getting out of the house every once in a while, helps me, whether it’s a run through the hills by my house, a trip to the

grocery store or even a walk around the block to get some fresh air.

It is also so important that we check-in with each other. A phone call, a FaceTime call or a letter from a friend really uplifts my

spirts. My neighbor recently dropped off some freshly grown rosemary on my porch and waved hello. That meant so much to

me… It reminded me of the neighborhood I grew up in, where my mom still makes soup as if she’s feeding a small army, but

instead, she feeds her elderly neighbors, while still maintaining the 6 – 8 feet of distance, of course.

These times are so hard, but I’m hoping through our ASHRAE community, we can get through this period together. Our wine

enthusiast board member, John Gardner, has set up a virtual wine tasting too! Now that’ll be something that certainly lifts

    our glasses and spirits.

    Register at: https://ggashrae.org/meetinginfo.php?id=182

    Warmly and with care,

    Alyse Falconer, Ashrae President 2020-2021

    GAC Government Affairs Committee January

Government outreach Days Feb. 16-17Government Outreach Day to our local state representatives will be held virtually this year. There are no challenges, only opportunities. The virtual meetings provide the opportunity to bring in the subject matter expert when needed as opposed to spending a whole day in Sacramento for a 30 minute meeting. Also, virtual meetings provide the opportunity to have “flies on the wall” that want to observe the process of ASHRAE meeting with legislatures. If you are interested in being a fly on the wall, please email Mitch Pinsker at [email protected].

U.n. & Global ABc Report Shows increase in World-Wide Building Emissions According to a new report from the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) and the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP), buildings and construction accounted for 38% of global greenhouse gas emissions worldwide in 2019. The report highlights the use of carbon-intensive electricity in parts of the world and that decarbonization for these sectors have slowed down considerably. The report also states that buildings account for nearly 55% of total electricity consumption worldwide. congress Passes Government Funding Bill with coViD-19 Relief ProvisionsHFc Phasedown: The legislation will require a phasedown of the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 85% over 15 years, per the schedule in the Kigali amendment to the Montreal protocol. ASHRAE has  supported this legislation (the AIM Act) previously and it was included in ASHRAE’s public policy priorities for Society Year 2020-2021.

    FEBRUARY 2021 – Valentine’s Day 2021

“Let me call you Sweetheart…I’m in love with you…”…a great Valentine Day song!”

…. Beth Slater Whitson, music by Leo Friedman

1910…Bing Crosby 1934 …Ah!… the good old days!…historically a simpler time…and how does ASHRAE fit into the February Holiday?...Easy!...CANDY!

A Red Valentine-shaped box of chocolates!...the chocolates unable to be produced without ASHRAE technology!...The cooking, enrobing, cooling, preserving, and storing of candy depends upon ASHRAE!...Chapter 42 of the ASHRAE Handbook of Refrigeration spells it all out!...and CANDY is big business!

The Bay Area has present, five of the 100 largest candy makers in the World…“See’s Candy”… Herman Goelitz’s “Jelly Bellies”, Bloomer Chocolate, Ghirardelli Chocolate, and “American Licorice”…Each company is a living laboratory of applied ASHRAE-technology…Check out the ASHRAE Handbook!

American Licorice in Union City with over seven-acres under-roof produces the ubiquitous “Red Vines” along with real licorice candy…The plant is filled with hot water boilers, steam boilers, drying and cooking tunnels, blow-pipe material-conveying systems, candy coolers, evaporative coolers, refrigeration equipment. pumps, jacketed-cooking kettles with votators, heat exchangers, immense spiral-fed cooking and cooling rooms, and plant air-rotation equipment, and supply and exhaust fans, extrusion equipment, and computerized control systems…If you wanted to practice using ASHRAE-technology you would be hard pressed to find a more diverse application than a candy plant!

Chocolate processing plants, likewise, are full of our ASHRAE-related equipment. The chocolate plants produce one of my favorite Christmas-handouts… “10-pound solid, chocolate bars”…These are called…“candy makers cake”…to the trade. These are supplied to the likes of See’s Candy for their use in coating, filling, and enrobing, as they produce their finished candy.

The M & M story…In the 1970’s… when selling industrial fans for conveying product…in this case for cooling foundry sand…I stumbled onto the firm in Emeryville that was also designing and building the conveying system for the chocolate-filled M & M-pellet…before the outer-coating was “plated” in the colors that we all recognize. In the Emeryville-firm’s shop was a 600-pound barrel of M & M’s…used for test purposes. While showing me the sand-coolers that were being built, I noticed the store of M & M’s…the Owner said… “Help yourself”…and I scooped up a small handful…Two weeks later in the firms’ office I was there to inspect the sand coolers’ progress…I hinted to the owner that perhaps we should “visit” again…the shop!...His reply was “Oh forget it!...18 employees had eaten all, 600 pounds of M & M’s in 9-days…doing the math that was 3.7 pounds of M & M’s…per day, per person!

At one time Peter Paul’s Candy Company…(Almond Joy and Mound Bar’s)…had a plant in San Leandro…They used ten- 25 hp open, reciprocating, Chrysler refrigeration compressors to operate five cooling tunnels…These were used after the candy bars had been enrobed…The candy manufacturing business was a lot of fun…rather like a Valentine’s Day…every day!...Candy-Candy-Candy!…and “filled”…or… “enrobed”… with ASHRAE-technology!

ScHoLARSHiPS AnD GRAnTSBy Richard Paillon, Scholarships and Grants Lead2021 ASHRAE Winter Conference Grants February 9-11, 2021The Golden Gate Chapter would like to invite Chapter Students to apply for a grant for registration at the 2021American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Winter Conference that will be held on-line. The student registration fee for the previous ASHRAE virtual conference was $25; the chapter will cover whatever this year’s fee will be

In the past ASHRAE hosted their annual conference and expo in major cities. The conference was normally attended by over 10,000 industry professionals. The Golden Gate chapter would regularly sponsor two student ASHRAE members to attend the conference. This year’s virtual conference (due to the Covid 19 pandemic) is a great opportunity to have many more student members take part in the activities. There will be many live technical sessions and more recorded sessions available for 18 months. See https://www.ashrae.org/conferences/2021-virtual-winter-conference .

Student members please put this on your calendar. Applicants are required to:

    • Be an ASHRAE Student member enrolled in a college or university within the geographical area covered by the Golden Gate Chapter.

    • Attend at least 2 sessions at the conference.

    • Apply for the grant prior to registering on line for the conference. A confirmation of the grant will then be sent to the student.

    • After attendance submit a receipt or acknowledgement of payment for conference registration and a list of the sessions attended.

Students may submit their grant request with their ASHRAE membership number to [email protected]. Those who do not apply for their grant prior to the deadline may still be reimbursed for attendance if there are grants left over after the normal application process.

Requests are due no later than 5:00 pm on February 5, 2021.

Golden Gate chapter ScholarshipsThe Golden Gate Chapter of ASHRAE will distribute as much as $54,000 in scholarships to our student members. These are independent of the scholarships distributed by the ASHRAE National Society. This breaks down to:

    • Eric T Andresen Memorial Scholarship Fund (eleven scholarships) $50,000

    • Golden Gate Chapter Student Scholarship (two scholarships) $4,000

Student members, please apply as early as possible. Others, please encourage any student members you know to apply for the Golden Gate Chapter’s scholarships. The deadline for both types of scholarship March 5, 2021. All applicants have a good chance of winning one of these scholarships due to the history of limited numbers of applicants. Last year all qualified ap-plicants were awarded a scholarship.

K-12 ScHooL coViD READinESSYour chance to help prepare K-12 Schools for ReopeningBy Isaac Simpson, K-12 School COVID-Readiness Volunteering Lead

The ASHRAE COVID-19 Taskforce has continued to provide our industry guidance and recom-mendations throughout the epidemic. The Golden Gate chapter student outreach committee is working to help our local schools understand the reopening guidelines as it applies to K-12 classrooms in the Bay Area. We are hoping to recruit some volunteers to join us in visiting select schools to highlight those recommendations for common classroom HVAC systems. Our goal will be to visit different schools with different HVAC equipment types and show how the guidelines can be used to assess their current status versus what has been recommended. Following each visit the group will issue findings as related to the

taskforce guidance. Photos and/or short videos from each site will be shared on the chapter website as a resource to other local schools that might have similar HVAC systems.

The shared information from these site visits will improve the understanding of HVAC Equipment Inspection, Ventilation, Filtra-tion, and to possibly how those relate to Energy Use and Building Controls. In addition, these efforts will also be instructional to local schools on how they might be eligible for HVAC improvements funded through the passing of AB 841 which goes into effect early 2021.

We hope to recruit volunteers that would be excited to help make the taskforce guidance tangible for our local K-12 community. The chapter hopes to recruit volunteers from across multiple disciplines for this effort. Volunteers will need to participate in a virtual pre-meeting to review a common checklist for performing the assessment. We are asking that volunteer time be employer supported and that volunteers provide their own appropriate PPE and transportation for these visits.

Finally, all activities will be conducted in adherence to state and local guidelines related to safety during the pandemic. School site visits will be done at empty campuses or outside of scheduled classroom hours.

Planning is also underway for a multi-speaker session along sustainability theme with up and coming women engineers. If you would like to present or nominate someone, please refer to the CTTC update for further details.

This is an exciting time for us putting together these sessions and if you are interested in joining this committee and/ or have ideas for events, please contact Manalee Nabar at [email protected]

A WoRD FRoM THE ASHRAE REFRiGERATion coMMiTTEE As might be expected California is leading the way when it comes to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG). Going forward expect to see a lot of focus on the use and application of natural refrigerants which have very low global warming potential (GWP) of 0 to 4 like ammonia (R717), CO2 (R744) and propane (R290). The food processing industry has used ammonia for decades and technologies are evolving that make CO2 and propane more desirable. Stay tuned for upcoming technical sessions and potential jobsite visits highlighting the use of the highly efficient
