Happy New Year GGASHRAE Members

Doesnrsquot it feel so good to finally be able to say that Welcome to 2021 The moment we have all been waiting forhellip

So what are you doing with your year What are your goals Every year my husband used to ask me that knowing how much it annoyed me I hated feeling pressured to set some goal or idea that I most likely would forget about and put off to the side

After thinking about my goals I realized that I set loose intentions Things that I hope I will be able to achieve in one way or another The largest intention that Irsquove personally set is to be more present in a positive way Focus more on my work commitment to ASHRAE my family and myself I am limiting the negatives in my life which often includes the news these days unfortunately I will be keeping an eye out for the vaccine though whenever itrsquos my turn to take it

I think so many of us are pinning our hopes on this vaccine I am longing for a sense of normality an in-person ASHRAE meeting a shared plate of pastries at an YEA or WiA Breakfast event (GASP Not a SHARED plate) and shaking a new memberrsquos hand again Itrsquos too far of a distant memory unfortunately but we will continue to thrive in this pandemic-world

In the meantime I plan to be patient soaking up the time at home which permits me more time with my son amongst other time passing measures I even started a crossword puzzle the other day I am looking forward to this year and connecting with you all virtually We have some social events in the works to bring our community together

Through this all though please remember how quickly our ASHRAE Society helped to educate our members and the world on this virus Check out the Society site for more information

New code Review Subcommittee Submitted code Review Proposals to iAPMoThe Government Affairs Committee Code Review subcommittee has submitted three proposals to improve the California Mechani-cal Code for 2022 The three proposals are as follows

1 Classify garage exhaust as Class 2 air per the ASHRAE 621 tables

2 Match the duct leakage test standards to ASHRAE 901

3 Clarify language regarding refrigerant machinery rooms and the duct pipe equipment restrictions that live in said refrigerant machinery rooms

This was a team effort led by Golden Gate ASHRAErsquos most seasoned veterans We safely met via video conference calls and all members contributed with ideas and constructive critique that should result

in a clearer mechanical code for all of us Wersquoll keep you posted on developments

ASHRAe Member Provides comment During california Hearing on HfcsOn December 10 Colin Laisure-Pool ASHRAE member and Government Affairs Committee Regional Vice Chair for Region X provided verbal comments at the California Air Resources Board public hearing for a regulatory proposal regarding Prohibi-tions on the Use of Certain Hydrofluorocarbons in Stationary Refrigeration Chillers Aerosols-Propellants and Foam End-Uses Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are a class of highly potent greenhouse gases and reducing these emissions is required by Califor-nia Senate Bill 1383 which was signed into law in 2016 Mr Laisure-Poolrsquos comments supported the proposed phasedown of HFCs but also requested that the state of California update building codes with the latest ASHRAE refrigerant safety standards These comments reiterated letters previously sent by 2020-21 ASHRAE President Charles E Gulledge III PE in August of this year to both the california air resources Board and the office of the State Fire marshal requesting that ASHRAE Standards 15 ndash 2019 and 34 ndash 2019 be incorporated into state building codes concurrently with this regulation More information on the regulatory proposal can be found here (httpsww2arbcagovrulemaking2020hfc2020)

congressional Negotiators Agree on energy PackageCongressional negotiators have released the legislative text for a comprehensive energy package (httpsfilesconstantcontactcom26e6b52b60149ee2fba-d0e9-4414-9b2f-ff8b4de2fe98pdf ) that includes sections on energy efficiency energy storage grid modernization and carbon management The 533-page bill would provide energy retrofitting assistance for schools push for energy efficient data centers boost the Weatherization Assistance Program and push for increase energy and water efficiency measures in Federal buildings The bill is likely to be attached to a $14 trillion omnibus spending measure that would fund government until September 30 2021

We are in the middle of what has become our Countryrsquos most active sporting-timehellipFootballhellipwith its professional NFL playoffs bowl games and College playoffshellipThe local Golden Gate Chapterrsquos members do have a bit of an historic connection the San Francisco lsquo49rsquo ershellip

The SF 49rsquoershellipin 1946hellipwere founded in the back right hand-corner booth of the St Francisrsquos Ice Cream Shop on 24th and Yorkhellipon the edge of the outer MissionhellipSo how does that connect to our industry

Anderson amp Rowehellipthe venerable SF-mechanical contracting firm founded in 1921hellipon Harrison Street in San Franciscohellipwas operated by Harold Turner and his brother Franhellipon contract for the widow of Bill AndersonhellipAnderson amp Rowe was purchased by Buckley amp Son in 1964hellipto become Anderson Rowe amp BuckleyhelliprdquoARampBrdquo to the tradehellipa mainstay in our Golden Gate HVAC-area

ScHoLARSHiPS AND GRANTSBy Richard Paillon Scholarships and Grants Lead2021 ASHRAE Winter Conference Grants February 9-11 2021The Golden Gate Chapter would like to invite Chapter Students to apply for a grant for registration at the 2021American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Winter Conference that will be held on-line The student registration fee for the previous ASHRAE virtual conference was $25 the chapter will cover whatever this yearrsquos fee will be

In the past ASHRAE hosted their annual conference and expo in major cities The conference was normally attended by over 10000 industry professionals The Golden Gate chapter would regularly sponsor two student ASHRAE members to attend the conference This yearrsquos virtual conference (due to the Covid 19 pandemic) is a great opportunity to have many more student members take part in the activities There will be many live technical sessions and more recorded sessions available for 18 months See httpswwwashraeorgconferences2021-virtual-winter-conference

Student members please put this on your calendar Applicants are required to

bull Be an ASHRAE Student member enrolled in a college or university within the geographical area covered by the Golden Gate Chapter

bull Attend at least 2 sessions at the conference

bull After attendance submit a receipt or acknowledgement of payment for conference registration and a list of the sessions attended

K-12 ScHooL coViD ReADiNeSSYour chance to help prepare K-12 Schools for ReopeningBy Isaac Simpson K-12 School COVID-Readiness Volunteering Lead

The ASHRAE COVID-19 Taskforce has continued to provide our industry guidance and recom-mendations throughout the epidemic The Golden Gate chapter student outreach committee is working to help our local schools understand the reopening guidelines as it applies to K-12 classrooms in the Bay Area We are hoping to recruit some volunteers to join us in visiting select schools to highlight those recommendations for common classroom HVAC systems Our goal will be to visit different schools with different HVAC equipment types and show how the guidelines can be used to assess their current status versus what has been recommended Following each visit the group will issue findings as related to the

taskforce guidance Photos andor short videos from each site will be shared on the chapter website as a resource to other local schools that might have similar HVAC systems

The shared information from these site visits will improve the understanding of HVAC Equipment Inspection Ventilation Filtra-tion and to possibly how those relate to Energy Use and Building Controls In addition these efforts will also be instructional to local schools on how they might be eligible for HVAC improvements funded through the passing of AB 841 which goes into effect early 2021

We hope to recruit volunteers that would be excited to help make the taskforce guidance tangible for our local K-12 community The chapter hopes to recruit volunteers from across multiple disciplines for this effort Volunteers will need to participate in a virtual pre-meeting to review a common checklist for performing the assessment We are asking that volunteer time be employer supported and that volunteers provide their own appropriate PPE and transportation for these visits

Finally all activities will be conducted in adherence to state and local guidelines related to safety during the pandemic School site visits will be done at empty campuses or outside of scheduled classroom hours

Qualificationsbull Bachelorrsquos Degree in Controls Mechanical Electrical or Architectural Engineering bull 6 or more years of experience in commissioning for new construction projects bull HVAC and building controls emphasis is required client facing experience required bull The ability to prioritize effectively balance assigned work and exceptional organization skills are required for our con-

stantly evolving environmentbull Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based workingbull Presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels

Preferred Qualificationsbull LEED AP and other LEED accreditations bull PE License in mechanical engineeringbull Sustainability and modeling experiencebull Industry recognized certifications such as CCP CMVP CEM bull Experience using Facility Grid CxAlloy or similar commissioning-based software are desired
