Well it’s true; the Dog Days of Summer are here. It’s hot now, however it will cool off for a few days, then it will warm up again, just hope it will not last that long. The riding season this year has been great, even with all the rainy days that we have had this year. We have more good rides yet this year, get out and ride while you can, when you cannot you will miss it, just ask me. In Sept. 13 / 14 we will have Buckeye Timeout at Plain City, there is no cost for this event, you get in free unless you go and camp out. That will be $25 each night, tent camping only $20 for the weekend. Two of us will have our campers there, so come join us and relax, we have lawn chairs. The State Team will have different games you could join in. If you wish, it is not that long a ride, so you can be home early, if you need. Look at the ride calendar and join in the rides we have left this year, I should be able to ride with you some time in Aug. if all goes as planned.

Chapter Assistant Director Margaret Moore

July 7th turned out to be a perfect day for a ride so I decided to head down to US Route 50 towards Marietta. Once I was on the road I traveled doing the speed limit which allowed me to view the scenery around me. After passing through Athens on US 33, I turned onto US 50 then onto route 7 towards Marietta. Once I came to the Rest Area on 7, I stopped for a break so that I could stretch my legs and relieve the pain in my posterior. As they say, “Oh what a relief it is”. Back on the road I made the decision to travel north on the “triple nickel” – route 555. As those who have ridden on this route know there are lots and lots of hills, curves, and oh my! I stopped at one point to take a photo of the sign that indicated the 555 and a local pulled up beside my bike and mentioned that there had been a recent fatality at that turn. A truck driver had lost his life at that turn.

I eventually caught up to a couple riding on a Harley-Davidson trike going slower than I was so I had to wait to pass them. It must have been 20-30 minutes before they pulled off to the side of the road and allowed me to continue riding at my speed.

I started my ride up the 555 about 12:30 pm and I finally reached the Speedway on Route 22 in South Zanesville about 3 pm. By this time I was tired, thirsty and needed a restroom break. After my break I headed towards home on 22. All together I had put 240 miles on my trike in the hot sun and the humidity. It was an enjoyable ride for me and I hope others will get out and ride it, too!

Robert G & Angela Williams

Hello Fellow Riders,

Summer is in full swing. My home chapter OH-T, “The Rubber City Riders”, had a 3-day ride down to the Flight 93 Memorial and it was hot. So, an article on Hyperthermia might be in order. Hyperthermia is described as; “The condition occurs when the body's heat-regulation system becomes overwhelmed by outside factors, causing a person's internal temperature to rise”. The outside forces this weekend were the air temperature in the 95-degree range. The next things we all need to know are; what are the signs to watch for and defend against when we are out enjoying our ride. Hyperthermia, which is when the body's core temperature begins to rise, occurs in three stages

heat cramps,

heat exhaustion

heat stroke

Heat Stroke being the most serious; Heat cramps may be an early sign of heat illness and dehydration. So, what do we do to prevent this from occurring? Let’s look at my chapter ride from this past weekend and see.

Ride Coordinator for the ride planned plenty of stops to get out of the sun and hydrate. Road Captain leading the ride had a pre-ride talk and reviewed the planned route and planned stops. The Lead, a trained Road Captain, asked several times over the CB if everyone was Okay or needed an additional stop. The Tail, a trained Road Captain (Me), watched to ensure no erratic riding was occurring. The ride members openly discussed what they did to help with the heat like wetting towels and placing them on their neck and shoulders or cooling vests. At one stop I was visiting with another Rider who happened to stop where we had, he found a Hi-Vis cooling vest, how cool is that; a Hi-Vis Cooling Vest.

Looking at our Chapter Ride, the steps taken were not that difficult to implement. Planning to prevent is the key. My hope that this tid-bit will provide some insight to prevention and how simple it can be. By the way, a great route and wonderful people to ride with: Priceless!! Robert G & Angela WILLIAMS
