Superior Tennis SuccessSuperior Tennis SuccessWith the 2012/2013 junior xtures summer season now completed, we have seen teams competing from Ormeau to Palm Beach, with all of the venues lodging around 98 teams spread across 14 grades.

Superior Tennis, recognised as a small club based at Tallara Tennis Club, Coombabah, lodged 6 teams into the competition. Superior Tennis has always supported the junior competition on the Gold Coast and is looking forward to the upcoming short seasons format to help encourage more players to join the competitions.

Superior Tennis, for such a small club has around 50 young tennis enthusiasts ranging from beginners to advanced. During the 2012/2013 junior summer season, all six Superior Tennis teams made the playoffs ranging from section 1 – 8. All of the competitors had a great season, where they proceeded to make the semi nals.

We asked Head Coach, Nathan Waddell how the club has done so well. “I have a big belief in all of the developing players and back

their individual talents and abilities.

Each child has their own talents and skill set and I cater to that, and help them continue to grow into better players. Our focus is on fun, good sportsmanship and building people,” said Nathan.

Some of their up and coming players have a growing interest in competing in the local tournament scene, following their junior pathway by venturing into the JDS tournaments and numerous other Tennis Australia tournaments. “We have had at least 10 players competing in the 2012/13 JDS tournaments and a couple of aspiring young players that continue on their pathway playing in white, bronze and silver series events throughout Queensland,” said Nathan.

If you are interested in joining Superior Tennis for training or competition please contact Superior Tennis on 0416 121 858 or via email at [email protected].

In January, Ryan Kebblewhite from Sonic Tennis, Lefty Wright and Steve Merker from North Queensland took a group of twenty-four children on a Southern Tour down to Albury and Wodonga in Victoria to play on natural grass.

The tour started with the Margaret Court Cup Teams event played over one day. This teams event is a big event that is always well supported, with over twenty-ve teams across A and B divisions competing.

The A team consisting of Blake Kebblewhite, Aaron Westerlund, Rhan Burton, Brendan Goldsmith, Mitch Robins, Sam Nyika and Bronte Argent won the overall event and now have their names on the shield, alongside the names of current Aussie professional players on the tour, Sam Groth and James Duckworth. This was a great achievement on their rst day on the tour on grass, and for four out of the seven players, it was their rst ever time playing on natural grass.

After the teams event there were two OJT/AMT tournaments on back-to-back, one at Albury and one at Wodonga.

Sonic’s Southern Tour goes naturalSonic’s Southern Tour goes naturalThis was a great couple of weeks, as the children learnt to play on natural grass, a surface you don’t see around enough anymore. The players had a total change of game plan which included serve and volleying and chip and charging, which also you don’t see kids doing enough of these days

The tour then continued on to the Australian Open where they attended the rst three days seeing many of the top players train and play like Federer, Djokovich, Del Porto, Murray, Sharapova, the Williams sisters and many many more.

Some of the kids were lucky enough to get photos with a few of the top players as well as receive signatures and a brief chat after their hitting sessions.

After the 3 days at the Open the tour then continued onto Tweed Heads where they all competed in the Tweed Heads OJT bronze event with all the North QLD children getting billeted out by the Sonic Tennis families. It was a great learning experience for everyone involved and all children played enough tennis and gained vital match experience and practice.

It is time to realise that taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health, and the team at Totally Teeth are here to help you. If you have untreated ill oral health or dental diseases you may experience discomfort, pain, loss of sleep, inability to eat certain foods, eating disorders, embarrassment about your appearance or an overall loss of self-condence. It is important to understand how your mouth affects your body, and what can actually go wrong. We know that bacteria can build up on teeth and make them more prone to infection, but did you know that it is when our immune system moves in to attack the infection, that our gums become inamed and may bleed.

It is over time that inammation and the chemicals it releases, eats away at the gums and bone structure that holds our precious teeth in place. The result is gum disease, otherwise known as gingivitis. In more advanced cases, you may hear the word periodontitis.

Could it be that a healthy mouth means more than just a sparkling smile? Research is showing just that, that our oral health may be linked with heart disease, diabetes, low birth weights, premature birth and osteoporosis, just to name a few. We all spend so much money on our hair, nails and facials and neglect one of the most important areas of concern, our mouths. So.... how can we protect our oral health? To protect our oral health we recommend that you visit your local Totally Teeth Dentist regularly and try to treat problems before they become too serious (and expensive). It is imperative that we all simply practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing twice a day, replacing our tooth brushes regularly, ossing and enjoying a healthy diet.

The importance of Oral Health! The importance of Oral Health! It is vitally important that we also ensure our children are aware of the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits and oral hygiene and we lead by example. Many of us are too embarrassed to visit a dentist or worried about the cost. At Totally Teeth we offer all new patients a free check up and can even help with arranging payment plans. Don’t put up with bad breath, pain or discoloured teeth. Smile with condence and book an appointment with us today. Totally Teeth have six locations covering the coast, with extended opening hours. Visit our website www.totallyteeth.com.au, follow us on Facebook or call 1300 80 58 50 to arrange an appointment for you and your family. Totally Teeth are proud sponsors of the Gold Coast Junior Development Series.

Mudgeeraba Tennis Club has been known as the quiet little country Tennis Club for many years, set on the edge of the City surrounded by parkland.

The Courts were originally situated in the heart of Mudgeeraba itself, now the site of Mudgeeraba Market Shopping Centre. Upon moving to its present site, surrounded by the Lions Park, and adjacent to the Scout and Girl Guides Hall, thanks to Gold Coast City Council, it has expanded from two courts to ve, three synthetic grass, one rebound ace and a Plexicushion Court. Many Community Members witnessed the re-construction last year of Court 1, which involved a complete makeover from foundations to surfacing, and progression to installation of a wonderful viewing area, which has been perfectly named "The Terrace". Patrons are now able to relax and enjoy watching matches on new seating, which was also installed on all Courts for players’ convenience, as well around the Clubhouse. At the Gala Day Opening, the court was ofcially opened by our local Councilor, Mr. Glenn Tozer. The Opening attracted many people and there was face painting for the children, a jumping castle and local business market stalls.

With the assistance of Gold Coast City Council and Tennis Queensland, the Mudgeeraba Tennis Club Committee decided to advertise for Expressions of Interest for Management of MTC. Early in January 2013, it was announced that Andrew and Dee Dornseiff were appointed as Management of the Club. Andrew, who has been coaching at MTC for nearly 15yrs, has extensive experience in Australia and UK, being a qualied Club Professional Coach, coordinating Tournaments, as well as being Head stringer for ITF Tournaments.

What's the most important thing in a coaching academy for it to have success? Energy and enthusiasm hands down. The coaches must be willing to thrive on helping people and enjoy coaching because this will ultimately transform onto the students and make for a positive and happy learning environment. This will in turn bring repeat business and word of mouth that students are involved in a friendly, successful and caring environment and that will do wonders for any business.

What makes you happy on the coaching court? When adults and kids nally get the clicking moment! When they have a breakthrough moment that enables them to progress further with a particular skill or tactic and then they smile from ear to ear. When these moments happen I often think that I am actually as happy or even happier than they are.

Your most favored playing surface and why? Grass. Real grass. I grew up playing on entoucas (clay) in Melbourne. However most school holidays our whole family went to country Victoria and played the grass tournaments. I love volleying and in particular serve volleying, as well as using my slice backhand to mix it up. I had my best success on grass winning most of the tournaments as the surface obviously suits these shots and my game really well. It was a great way to build my condence and variety as a junior player.

What do you think a player needs to have to be able to succeed and go as far as possible in tennis? A killer instinct, with a very sound and happy upbringing. I strongly believe that it’s all about the attitude of the individual. The drive from within needs to be the overwhelming force and for the player to be happy. It cannot come from external sources. Success should be judged by what the player wants to achieve. To be able to make it to the professional level I think that a player needs an extremely athletic body and a game with variety.

What do you see a coach has to have to get the best out of the children in each lesson? A personality. Coaches need to be able to communicate effectively with students in a way that is friendly and exciting. If fun and energy is lacking then there will be problems. Patience is also obviously just as important. Without patience effective practice through repetition cannot be achieved.

Most exciting player to watch and why? Former player: Pat Rafter for his dynamic serve volleying. Current player: Stan Wawrinka. His one handed backhand is so powerful and spectacular to watch, made even more special because it is so rare to see one handers these days.

The countdown is on to the 13th annual Bruce Lynton Charity Ball.

Since its inception more than $1.3 million has been raised for local charities including the Cancer Council Queensland, Youngcare, Surf Life Saving and Guide Dogs Australia. Beric Lynton said he was looking forward to hosting the Charity Ball on April 20th, which follows their Bruce Lynton Charity Golf Day on April 19th, both held at Royal Pines Resort.

"The Bruce Lynton Charity Ball and Golf Day's sole aims are to continue the support of our local charities and remember the important work they also do," Mr Lynton said.

"Over the past few years we have received fantastic support from local and interstate businesses through the donation of silent and grand auction items to our ball and this year is no exception."

While the grand auction items won't be conrmed until March 1st, some of the silent auction items include a three nights stay for up to four adults in a two-bedroom villa at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat and 18-holes of golf for four guests on the Palms Golf Course at Sanctuary Cove.

Other items up for grabs include a Moet collection gift basket and two night's accommodation at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort and Spa with breakfast included. Headlining the evening's entertainment are Dale Ryder and Jason Singh, the lead singers from Boom Crash Opera and Taxiride.

The black-tie event is being held in the ballroom of Royal Pines Resort from 6.30pm to 1am with tickets at $230 per person or $2300 for a table of 10. Included is a three-course meal, basic spirits, wine, beer, soft drinks, all night entertainment and the chance to bid on a number of much-sought after items.

Tickets are on sale now, details at www.brucelyntoncharityball.com or call (07) 5557 7999

Sonic Tennis Coach, Trent Psterer started playing tennis at the age of 3, with his parents at a local club in Melbourne. Here is his take on coaching and some of his experiences and opinions.

Favorite shot to teach to kids and why? Volleys. So many kids struggle with volleying and nesse on the court these days. It’s so satisfying when they are eventually able to control the ball from fast paced shots from other players.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? Being in the outdoors with adults and kids who bring enormous energy and enthusiasm onto the court. I love working with people and seeing them have fun improving their strokes and building their self esteem.
