2013 Tennis Gold Coast Annual Dinner

Tennis Gold Coast President Mike Ford - What a Year!Crashing through the opposition at the Australian Seniors National titles in Perth earlier in the year, to win both the singles and double titles (055) Mike defeated No 1 in the world Glen Busby in the semi nals and accounted for Gary Thoroughgood in the nal 2 and 2.

He was then chosen to for the 8th time to represent Australia in the World Seniors team event in Turkey where in a pivotal match he defeated world no 3 Herbert Riederer from Austria to help advance the team to the playoffs where the team nished a credible 5th out of 18 teams.

Upon his return he got the trifecta at the annual Gold Coast Seniors open tournament to win the singles, doubles and mixed.

At the just completed Queensland Clay Court Seniors event at Ipswich Mike again won the singles and mixed.

When asked about his stellar year Mike replied, ”Playing TGC Thursday night xtures and Gold Coast Seniors doubles on Saturdays each week against very seasoned and competent tennis players (there are no easy matches), has denitely contributed to the results because of the constant exposure to the cauldron of match play. It is incredibly challenging dealing with strengths and weaknesses of such a wide variety of players”.

If anyone is contemplating the pursuit of tennis Mikes advice is, it’s worth every minute, because on the Gold Coast we have a world standard of competitions and players to test yourself against, and we cater for all standards.

You never know whom you might be up against, Mike played Tennis Gold Coast xtures against Bernard Tomic and Sam Stosur during their junior days.

Anyone wishing to play Tennis Gold Coast fixtures, please call Sarah at the office on 55328566.

AO Blitz at Tallebudgera State SchoolAO Blitz at Tallebudgera State SchoolTennis Australia is brought an exciting new initiative to the Gold Coast that was a fantastic opportunity for the students of Tallebugera State School as they join in the biggest celebration of tennis this country has ever seen. Taking centre stage from now until the start of the Australian Open and beyond, the AO Blitz invites people, clubs and schools to take up a number of tennis ‘challenges’ and be in the running for major prizes, sports grants and the chance to adopt a player at Australian Open 2014. That’s right. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Sam Stosur, Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova …the stars of international tennis could be playing for the Gold Coast this summer! Students from Tallebugera joined with Breakpoint Tennis Club in the competition at the opening of the school’s brand new Hot Shots mini tennis courts on Monday 2nd September 2013. Mini courts provide young children with the chance to have a go at tennis and enjoy the game at a size and skill level that suits them. By building these courts at their school, Tallebugera are giving even their smallest students the opportunity to experience the game and get involved in a sport that has for so long been a challenge for younger grades to conquer. To celebrate this exciting new opportunity, Tennis Australia brought some of the fun of the AO Blitz to the school including tennis mascot Terry the Tennis Ball, the Brisbane International trophies and some of the tennis challenges from the AO Blitz competition. Tallebudgera State School has been a part of Tennis Australia’s National School Partnership program in conjunction with Michael Mitchell and Glen Bowe from Breakpoint Tennis Centre. This year tennis was on display at the annual event of the Gold Coast Show. The event was held on the 30,31st August and 1st of September. The event was a BIG three days, but was very successful for tennis on the Gold Coast. The event was a great way for us to get tennis out to the Gold Coast and wider community. We were able to provide a great exposure of all the fantastic facilities and programs that tennis has to offer on the Gold Coast.

Thank you very much too all the clubs who came along and volunteered their time to help us out at the show. It was fantastic to have the support and the help from both coaches and committee members for this event.

Also a huge thank you to all our coaches who participating in our School Lead In program to promote the Gold Coast Show! The two weeks before the school we visited over 3000 kids to promote the Gold Coast show and to also give these schools the opportunity of experiencing tennis. Thank you to all these coaches who participating in this lead in program! We appreciate your time and support.

On the Sunday the 1st of September, Tennis Australia came up to support our event in conjunction with the AO Blitz program. Tennis Australia brought along the Australian Open Trophies and we also had guest appearances from Sponge Bob square pants (which was a huge hit with the kids). The AO Blitz is an interactive online competition that invites individuals, schools and clubs to take on a series of tennis-themed challenges to win great prizes.

Registered participants earn points for every challenge they complete, which are then awarded to their town. The towns that earn the most points will be represented on court by one of the world’s top tennis players at Australian Open 2014.

Looking for more power from your tennis racquet? The bigger oversize tennis racquets will offer you a lot more power for less effect to help keep you in the game. As we all grow older we generally lose power and get slower around the court, so to help most racquet companies have made a range of game improver racquets which are lighter with oversize racquet heads. The oversize racquets have a surface area of between 105 and 118 square inches. This makes them ideal for players looking for more power with an oversize racquet having a larger sweet spot. With a larger head it will also give more spin on the ball and greater power to be transferred to a shot.

The following three things will help make the tennis racquet a power racquet and give you the power you have always wanted.

1. Racquet Weight and MaterialsMost of the oversize racquets are light weight between 230g and 270g and made from graphite and or titanium which are stiff materials to help deliver good power as well as control, making them perfect for anyone looking for more power.

2. Head Size and Beam Width The head size is the area of the racquet string bed. This is normally somewhere between 105 to 118 sq. inch in an oversize racquet. The bigger the racquet head size, the bigger the trampoline effect on the tennis ball giving the racquet more power. The beam wide is the measurement across the edge of the racquet. A wider beam will give more power to a shot because the beam being wider will make the racquet stiffer. But as always there is a trade off with a reduction in the amount of control over the ball.

3. String Tension Most racquets you buy will be pre-strung with the strings at the middle of their tension range, but you can get the racquet restrung to adjust the tension for you depending on what you're after. Tighter strings mean more shot control and spin and looser strings mean more power but less control. More experienced players tend to play with high string tension for better control.

So if you want to upgrade from your current racquet - maybe you’re seeking more power, more control, more comfort... or a little of all three. Now is the time to come and talk to the friendly staff at Sporty's Warehouse to help you make the correct choice on that new tennis racquet. You can also view all the tennis racquets we have in-store on our tennis website at www.tennisbox.com.au

New Gold Coast Regional Assembly

The Gold Coast Regional Assembly AGM was held at the beginning of August. Regional Assemblies are the link between Tennis Queensland and its Afliated Bodies and are a forum for the clubs and associations in each region to organise tennis at a regional level.

The newly elected Regional Assembly members are as follows:

Chairperson - Mike Evans (delegate Tennis Gold Coast)Secretary – Betty-Ann Gain (delegate Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club)Treasurer - Stephen Kua (delegate Tennis Gold Coast)Regional Members - James Rapkins (delegate Beenleigh Tennis Inc.) & Mike Evans (delegate Tennis Gold Coast).

On Saturday the 15th of June, Gold Coast held their rst Grand Slam “Hot Shots” tournament. Beenleigh Tennis Club ran a fun and exciting “Hot Shots” tournament. The tournament consisted of Red Ball, Orange Ball and Green ball singles.

For most players this was their rst taste of tournament play in tennis. The day was enjoyable and the kids were given lots of tennis and all seemed to have a great time!

There were a total of 70 participants for the day! All players were able to feel like Rafael Nadal having a chance to play on the clay and feel a part of our Gold Coast French Open “Hot Shots” titles.

MLC Hot Shots Tournament is the perfect opportunity for children to participate in a competitive environment for the rst time, whilst still understanding the key elements of the MLCTHS program.

The objective of the MLC Hot Shots Tournament is to provide a competitive arm to the program so children are able to experience tennis tournaments for the rst time whilst still developing their skills through the MLC Tennis Hot Shots program. The aim is that these tournaments will begin to shape the culture of all tournaments across the country and provide a pathway for children to progress through.

The Beenleigh tennis club put on a sausage sizzle for all players and families. It was a fantastic fun lled day for all involved.

Thank you to all who were involved in the day and to all coaches who supported this event and brought their kids over to support and playing in this event.

A huge congratulations to Alison Scott/James Rapkins and their staff at Beenleigh tennis club for running a successful tournament that was a lot of fun for all who were involved.

TGC Rules and Etiquette: Rules for Players & ParentsTennis Gold Coast recently conducted a Tennis Etiquette & Rules Workshop for players and parents. For those who missed it, here are some basic rules and etiquette for players and parents:

• Each player is responsible for ALL calls on his/ her side of the net.

• If in doubt, the player must give the benefit of the doubt to his/ her opponent.

• All “out” or “fault” calls should be made promptly after the ball has bounced and loudly enough for the opponent to hear.

• All balls on your side of the net are your responsibility, to pick up and where appropriate, return directly to the server.

• The receiver should not return the first service if it is an obvious fault- let it go by or ground it.

• Do not enlist the aid of spectators, including parents, coaches etc., in making line calls, or attempting to determine the score or other on-court matters.

• If a player is unhappy with his/ her opponent’s actions or decisions, he/ she should call the referee. This is the responsibility of the player not the parent, coach or spectator.

• To avoid controversy over the score, the sever should announce the game score before starting a game and the point score prior to serving for each point.

• Wait until a point is over before walking behind a court where a match is in progress.

• To retrieve a ball from another court or to return a ball to another court, wait until the players have completed a point.

• Do not stall, sulk, complain nor practice gamesmanship.

• Screaming regularly and loudly, whether in relation to winning and/ or losing a point is likely to cause interference to play on nearby courts ad may be considered unsportsmanlike conduct.

• Overt celebration directed at an opponent may be considered intimidation and therefore unsportsmanlike conduct.

TGC Rules and Etiquette: Rules for Players & Parents

Here are a few very basic facts on Nutrition that we should live by:

• Added sugar is a disaster • Omega-3 fats are crucial and most people don’t get enough • Artificial trans fats are very unhealthy and should be avoided• Eating vegetables will improve your health • It is critical to avoid a Vitamin D deficiency • Refines carbohydrates are bad for you • Supplements can never fully replace real foods• Unprocessed food is the healthiest • Most people would agree that we should choose ‘real food’ over processed food. • Healthy oils like the kind found in nuts, avocado’s and olive oil are the best. • Everyday you should eat some of your vegetables raw.

Each issue I will add more in-depth information on how to change your eating habits as a change of lifestyle. If you would like additional information, please contact Nutritionist, Jacqueline Unger via email [email protected]

From John Newcombe, Tony Roche, Rod Laver, Pat Cash Todd Woodbridge, Mark Woodforde and Pat Rafter we had some very ne serve and volleyers. These mentioned have had plenty of success at Grand Slam level singles and doubles with multiple wins, so why do so few of our top players use it and even our top juniors.

Will tennis ever return to the glory days when players used their smarts to out think and outwit an opponent or are we just going to be taught to muscle the ball from the baseline.

In our current crop of players, our own Sam Stosur has been widely acclaimed by many for including the serve and volley technique in her game culminating in her capturing the 2011 US Open women’s singles title.

Personally I would love to see the younger generation learn this skill and adapt it to their game plan, as it can be very effective. So bring back serve and volley.

Coaches Corner with Nathan Waddell Coaches Corner with Nathan Waddell Serve and Volley – the lost art

What has happened to the humble serve and volley technique?

Has it been blown away like a Nadal forehand?

Serve and volley is still a very good skill and executed properly can still be an effective way to win points and matches.

If you go back through the years many Australian tennis players were awesome exponents of the lost art of serve and volley.
