INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSThe University of Michigan has a long history of enrolling international students. This is “a Michigan tradition that goes well back to the beginning of the history of the University,” as J. Raleigh Nelson, founder of the Nelson International House, wrote in 1935.

• Michigan enrolled its first foreign students—one from Mexico and one from Wales—in 1847. The first student from Asia, Saiske Tagai, of Japan, came to U-M in 1872 to study literature

• In the 1890s, Chinese, South American, and Middle Eastern students began enrolling at Michigan.

• Michigan was an early and natural advocate of diversity and inclusion. Jose Celso Barbosa, a young man from Puerto Rico who wanted to study medicine, came to U-M in 1877 after being rejected from another school on racial grounds.

For International Students Coming to U-M from AbroadThere are many scholarships that international students may qualify for. Some examples include:

• Barbour Scholars — The Barbour Scholarships were en-dowed at the University of Michigan in 1917 by Levi Lewis Barbour for women of the highest academic and profes-sional caliber from the countries encompassing the large region extending from Turkey in the west to Japan and the Philippines in the east to study modern science, medicine, mathematics and other academic disciplines and profes-sions critical to the development of their native lands.

• Davis Scholars — The Davis United World College Scholars Program, founded by Shelby M.C. Davis and Philip O. Geier, is largest privately funded international scholarship program in the world. Each year more than

2,000 students (from 133 nations) attending 91 U.S. col-leges and universities receive generous support. Davis UWC Scholars are all graduates of United World Colleges, a group of 14 high schools across the globe that bring students of different nationalities together for studies emphasizing intercultural knowledge and awareness.

• Pan-Asia Alumni Scholarship Fund — The U-M Pan-Asia Alumni Scholarship provides important financial aid in support of outstanding undergraduate students from across Asia attending U-M. Established by our Hong Kong alumni in 2014 to honor the Pan-Asia Alumni Reunion, the Pan-Asia Alumni Scholarship unites the U-M family around Asia, deepens connections to U-M, and builds esprit de corps. Each year alumni and friends in Asia and around the globe contribute to the U-M Pan-Asia Alumni Scholarship in celebration of each other and future generations of students.

• Grotius Fellowship — Michigan Law is proud to award the prestigious Michigan Grotius Fellowship to several partic-ularly exceptional LLM students and research scholars. Named after Hugo Grotius, the seventeenth century Dutch jurist generally regarded as the father of modern interna-tional law, the fellowships acknowledge superior academic and professional achievement in all areas of law and recognize the promise of a distinguished legal career following graduate study.”
