Belief in Islam, is considering true from the heart the basic beliefs of Islam i.e. the Oneness of Allah Almighty, the existence of angles, heavenly books, prophets and the afterlife.

Belief in afterlife: Faith discusses the belief in afterlife and its role in

character-building so that students have the right concept of the afterlife and are encouraged to do good deeds.

Concept of Akhirah: Akhirah is an Arabic word which means something that

follows. It means that humans do not end for good with their death, but they will be resurrected on a certain day and rewarded for their deeds, good or bad.

The Holy Quran mentions the believers of the afterlife as:

…and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the afterlife.b. Describe the importance of belief in the afterlife.Ans: The belief in the afterlife is one of the important teachings

of Islam. This belief is asserted upon much in the Holy Quran and ranks next to belief in Oneness of Allah. It is because the afterlife is the basis for all the deeds in this world. The belief in the afterlife gives the concept of a never-ending life described to human beings by the prophets of Allah Almighty.

About the afterlife, every prophet of Allah Almighty told

Gohar Islamic Studies 8 Key Book5his people that life in this world is temporary, and the afterlife is never-ending. The Prophets informed that the life in this world is a trial from Allah Almighty.

The belief in afterlife tells us that it is only Allah Almighty who created everything in this universe for the first time, and only He will create these things again in an exalted way. It is the belief in the afterlife that produces love for Allah Almighty in the hearts of human beings.

If a person does not believe in the afterlife all his deeds will be discarded. There is a painful punishment for such people in the afterlife.

Allah Almighty says:

(Al-Araf 7: 147) Those who reject Our signs and the meeting in the

afterlife, vain are their deeds. The Holy Prophet said about the believers in

the afterlife: A person died so that he believed in Allah Almighty and the afterlife he will be said: Enter Paradise through any of its eight gates you like.

c. What is the role of belief in the afterlife in character building?

Ans: The belief in the afterlife (Akhirah) makes life of a human being purposeful. A believer in the afterlife not only does the right things but also preaches righteousness. Such a person always remains loyal to the commandments of Allah Almighty instead of getting wordly benefits only.Belief in the afterlife has the following impacts on human life:

1. A Sense of Responsibility: Belief in the afterlife produces a feeling of obedience to

Allah Almighty in a Muslim. This feeling wards them off

be rewarded magnificently, They have a hope that every good deed will be useful to them in the afterlife. Belief in the afterlife is a ray of hope that a Muslim always strives to gain the will of Allah Almighty.

3. Trust in Allah Almighty: Belief in the afterlife is a source for creating trust in Allah

Almighty. The Prophets , their Companions and Virtuous people always trust in Allah and work for public benefit. They do not expect reward from people in this world, rather do their work believing in Allah.

4. Patience and Endurance: Belief in the afterlife produces characteristics of patience

and endurance in a believer. Man has the knowledge that every hardship in this world results in heightening his status in the view of Allah. Likewise it is Allah Almighty who bestows happiness. Allah Almighty has a great reward for those bearing difficulties and hardships with patience.

5. Bravery: A person who believes in the afterlife is never afraid of

saying the right thing to a powerful ruler. Belief in the afterlife produces in them a feeling that the afterlife is better than the life in this world. They, therefore, do not hesitate to sacrifice their lives in the way of Allah Almighty.

6. Desire to do Good: Belief in the afterlife plays an effective role in creating a

desire to do good and hating evil. Belief in the afterlife is the basis of every good deed. A Muslim never harms others due to their fear of Allah, neither do they deny the rights of others nor do they harm them in any way. They always keep in mind that one day they will face Allah Almighty. They therefore, always think of doing more and more good deeds.

Gohar Islamic Studies 8 Key Book9

2. Fast: Virtues and Social Impact1. Answer the following in detail.a: Describe the meaning of fasting. Fast is one of the pillars of Islam. The Arabic word for fast

is “Saum”. It literally means to halt, or stay calm. As an Islamic term, it means to stop eating and fulfilling sensual desires from dawn till sunset.

Importance and Virtues of Fast: The Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. Fasting

is incumbent on every adult and healthy Muslim. Allah Almighty has declared fasting incumbent in every period and on every ummah.

Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran:

O you who believe, fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that may self-restraint (Al-Baqrah 2: 183)

Fasting is a worship with manifold and many times reward. The basic aim of fasting is virtuousness and keeping away from evil.

Virtuousness is another name for a feeling that keeps humans away from evil and inclines them to good deeds. Fasting is a big source for keeping humans away from sins. The Holy Quran, at another place, describes the necessity of fasting in the following words:

So everyone of you who is present during that month should spend it in fasting. (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Gohar Islamic Studies 8 Key Book10son of Adam is rewarded from ten times to seven hundred times but a fast about which Allah Almighty says” It is for Me and only I shall give its reward because a person fasting gives up eating and all their desires for Me only “(Ibn-e- Majah, Hadith: 1638).

The fast is a worship rewarded directly by Allah without involving angels. It is good tiding for those who fast they will get reward for their worship by the Lord Himself, involving nobody else.

This is a proof of unusual importance of fast. The Holy Prophet said more about the virtues and necessity of fast. "Fast is shield. The person fasting, therefore, should not do useless talk, nor should they do anything the ignorant do. If a person gets ready to quarrel and kill, the person fasting, or calls them names, the person fasting should only say, ‘I’ m fasting".

By Allah who holds my life, the smell from the mouth of the person fasting is dearer and holier to Allah than the fragrance of musk”. (Bukhari Hadith: 1776)

At another occasions, the Holy Prophet said "Jannah has a door called Riyan. Only those who fast shall enter Jannah through it".

Keeping in view all these virtues of fast, the Muslims should make special arrangements for worship during this month, and avoid wasting their time, It is because the reward for compulsory worship is increased seventy times during the month of Ramadan, and voluntary worship is rewarded equal to compulsory worship.

Eating “Sahar” and “Iftar” and doing other deeds punctually is an important source for creating discipline among the Muslims.

during the month of Ramadan makes the Muslim used to doing things punctually during the other months of the year.

4. Sacrifice: The holy deed of fasting is a great source for inducing the

good quality of sacrifice. This emotion is better displayed near the time of breaking fast when everyone has a desire to eat and drink but they sacrifice their desires only for the sake of Allah. This display by one Muslim induces others to sacrifice. So fasting is a great source of spreading the desire to sacrifice commonly.

5. Unity and Equality: The secret of development of any community is unity

and equality among its people. Fasting teaches us, unity and equality, and incites doing some efforts collectively. The establishment of an aura of unity and equality creates a feeling of natural love due to which a community progresses speedily.

6. Mutual Sympathy: Hunger and draught in the condition of fasting let us feel

the pains and troubles of other and incites sympathy for them. The Muslims make preparations for breaking fast for the poor and needy, and also try to fulfill their other needs. Ramadan, therefore, is also called the month of sympathy and pity.
