This year’s Autumn Literature Season includes WW1 poetry, the latest translations, and an evening of murder mystery in our library.

With our language courses in South Kensington and Kentish Town we offer everything from general to special courses, as well as sessions tailor- made just for you!

We work with schools networks across the UK to promote the German language in primary and secondary schools and we offer a variety of teacher training workshops and online tools.

For more information you can find us online, tweet us, Facebook us, or tell us what you want included on the next German Pop Spotify playlist. Looking forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to our events!

Angela KayaDirector, Goethe-Institut London

Get ready for an exciting season of film, music, art, theatre, literature, talks and more…

To celebrate the tube running all night from 12 September, we will take you on a journey into the murky underworld of Berlin’s Russian mafia with a Late Night Cinema Special showing Dominik Graf’s In The Face of Crime. Among other film highlights and dedicated series, we will explore R.W. Fassbinder’s influence on European cinema.

The music lovers among you will not want to miss this year’s Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, including the world premiere of composer Jakob Ullmann’s newest work.

We have been focusing extensively on digital culture - an increasingly all-encompassing aspect of our everyday lives - also through our work in the visual arts, with exhibitions, events, talks and two residencies with the Delfina Foundation and [SPACE].

Fierce Festival in Birmingham is again the place to catch boundary-pushing, experimental performance art from Germany, including choreographed wood-chopping on a hot pink terrain (Supernatural).

WALTER BENJAMINWED 16 SEP – WED 30 SEPWalter Benjamin’s uniquely multifaceted writings have been a major influence on 20th and 21st century thinking. To commemorate his death in September 1940 during his escape from the Nazis in a small Spanish border town, Carroll/Fletcher Gallery, the Goethe-Institut, Institut Ramon Llull, the London Review of Books Bookshop, Reaktion Books, the Royal College of Art, Verso Books, and the Whitechapel Gallery present a series of events dedicated to Benjamin’s complex life and work.

TRACING WALTER BENJAMIN – TWO DOCUMENTARIESWED 16 SEP 7PM

THE PASSAGES OF WALTER BENJAMINCombining spoken quotations from Benjamin’s writings and correspondences, as well as interviews with scholars and a wealth of photographs of manuscripts, notes, and letters, this film presents ‘The Arcades Project’ and some of Benjamin’s central ideas in the context of his life and times.

USA 2014, colour, 55 mins. In English. Director: Judith Wechsler.

BERLIN. DIE SINFONIE DER GROSSSTADT / BERLIN. SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITYTUE 22 SEP 7PMThis kaleidoscopic portrait of Benjamin’s native city set to a dynamic score by Edmund Meisel captures life in the modern metropolis in the mid-1920s. With its virtuoso montage, changing camera angles, and superimpositions, it exemplifies what Benjamin saw in the new medium of film – an ability to reflect, expand and deepen the way the new mass audience experiences reality.

QUIÉN MATÓ A WALTER BENJAMIN… / WHO KILLED WALTER BENJAMIN…Questioning whether Walter Benjamin committed suicide on his flight from the Nazis in the small Catalan town of Portbou, the film painstakingly retraces the circumstances of his death. WARNUNG VOR EINER HEILIGEN NUTTE / BEWARE OF A HOLY WHORE TUE 20 OCT 7PMWith this satirical study of a film cast and crew stranded in a Spanish hotel awaiting the arrival of the director and star, Fassbinder reflects on his experience of filmmaking. The jealousies and infighting among the group and the volatile behaviour of the frustrated director indicate Fassbinder’s lost faith in a collective creative process, which is similarly questioned in Olivier Assayas’ Irma Vep.

West Germany/Italy 1971, colour, 103 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With Lou Castel, Eddie Constantine, R.W. Fassbinder, Werner Schroeter, Marquard Bohm.

IRMA VEPTHU 22 OCT 7PM This film about the making of a remake of Louis Feuillade’s silent crime serial Les Vampires directly evokes Fassbinder’s Beware of a Holy Whore in its satirical depiction of personal and professional jealousies on and off-set and the struggle for artistic integrity. Maggie Cheung stars as herself, imported from Hong Kong to revive European cinema.

In collaboration with the Institut Français du Royaume-Uni.

France 1996, colour, 99 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Olivier Assayas. With Maggie Cheung, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Nathalie Richard, Lou Castell.

FASSBINDER AND EUROPEAN CINEMAWED 23 SEP – FRI 4 DECRainer Werner Fassbinder would have been 70 this year, giving us occasion to take an eclectic look at his legacy within the context of European cinema. The five pairings of films by Fassbinder with films by directors from France, Greece, Hungary, Portugal, and the UK are meant as an invitation to discover thematic or formal affinities but also to detect differences and transformations.

You may also be interested in Fassbinder – To Love Without Demands on 10 September, p.5.

KATZELMACHERWED 23 SEP 7PMSet in suburban Munich, the film has us observe the social rituals and relational dynamics of a group of supposed friends whose bourgeois narrow-mindedness, jealousies, and hypocrisy turn into outright xenophobia and violence when a Greek guest worker enters their circle. The film’s alienating effect and deadpan tone resurface in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg.

West Germany 1969, b/w, 88 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With R.W. Fassbinder, Hanna Schygulla, Lilith Ungerer, Rudolf Waldemar.

ATTENBERGTUE 29 SEP 7PMMarina’s life in a Greek factory town is divided between caring for her dying father and being instructed in sexual matters by her best friend Bella. A fan of David Attenborough, she observes the human species, finding it strange – not least its sexual rituals. Her observant attitude is conveyed through distancing devices partly borrowed from Katzelmacher and given a comedic twist.

Greece 2010, colour, 97 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Athina Rachel Tsangari. With Ariane Labed, Vangelis Mourikis, Evangelia Randou, Yorgos Lanthimos.

DIE BITTEREN TRÄNEN DER PETRA VON KANT / THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANTWED 4 NOV 7PMAfter two marriages with men, the fashion designer Petra falls in love with a woman for the first time; the younger, less sophisticated Karin. Their unequal relationship is jealously observed by Petra’s devoted assistant Marlene. The highly stylised world exclusively inhabited by women is reminiscent of Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy.

West Germany 1972, colour, 124 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Margit Carstensen, Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann, Katrin Schaake.

THE DUKE OF BURGUNDYFRI 6 NOV 7PMStrickland’s exquisitely designed, often humourous film discretely follows the subtle power shifts within the sadomasochistic relationship between the older Cynthia and her younger disciple Evelyn, who was partly inspired by Marlene in The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant.

UK 2014, colour, 104 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Peter Strickland. With Sidse Babett Knudsen, Chiara D’Anna.

CHINESISCHES ROULETTE / CHINESE ROULETTEWED 18 NOV 7PMIn this icy drama set in a large country house, 12-year-old crippled Angela forces her parents, their lovers and everyone else present to partake in the titular game to bring out hidden truths. A similarly heightened formal rigour is detectable in Béla Tarr’s Almanac of Fall.

West Germany 1977, colour, 86 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With Anna Karina, Margit Carstensen, Brigitte Mira.

ŐSZI ALMANACH / ALMANAC OF FALL FRI 20 NOV 7PMIn an old woman’s decaying mansion five people are caught up in a nightmarish psychodrama of greed, jealousy, and lost hope. The confinement to one location and the high degree of stylisation bring to mind Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette.

In collaboration with the Hungarian Cultural Centre London.

Hungary 1984, colour, 119 mins. With English subtitels. Director: Béla Tarr. With Hédi Temessy, Erika Bodnár, Miklós B. Székely.

IN EINEM JAHR MIT 13 MONDEN / IN A YEAR WITH 13 MOONSTUE 1 DEC 7PMDistraught after being left by her lover, the transsexual Elvira embarks on a journey confronting her past. But rather than helping her to come to terms with her body, the encounters she has deepen her loneliness and despair. One of Fassbinder’s most personal and moving films of which many resonances can be found in João Pedro Rodrigues’ To Die Like a Man.

West Germany 1978, colour, 124 mins. With English subtitles. Director: Rainer Werner Fassbinder. With Volker Spengler, Ingrid Caven, Gottfried John.

MORRER COMO UN HOMEM / TO DIE LIKE A MANFRI 4 DEC 7PMLike Elvira in A Year With 13 Moons, Tonia, a middle-aged drag queen in Lisbon, struggles with her transsexual identity and aging male body. While her younger boyfriend wants her to have a sex-change operation, her estranged son hates her for living as a woman.

Portugal 2009, colour, 133 mins. With English subtitles. Directed by João Pedro Rodrigues. With Fernando Santos, Alexander David, Gonçalo Ferreira de Almeida.
