The usual daily wage was a silver coin worth ten donkeys called a denarius. (Hence the name, for you Latin scholars out there.) A typical workday was from dawn to dusk. People will introduce themselves to you and immediately tell you how long they have been in the state, in the parish, in the neighborhood, etc. There is a temptation to think of oneself as a bit more important or deserving simply be- cause one has been here more than one winter. At the same time, we Alaskans and St. Patricks folks are pret- ty darn good at welcoming the newcomer. We love our state, our town, our neighborhood, and our parish. We want other people to love it too. So we bring cookies to new neighbors, help folks out with furniture, get them connected to things going on in the local scene that might interest them. In many ways we do this better than in other places. Probably because most of us came here from somewhere else too. This is the virtue that Jesus is talking about in the parable. In this sense, the denarius represents our relationship with God and each other. What matters is that at some point we have been invit- ed into the vineyard. When we get there is meaningless. Let us strive then to welcome others into this little part of the vineyard we call St. Patricks Parish, and to invite as many as we can into the parish family. Catechetical Sunday—Along that line, we celebrate all catechists past, present and future in the parish. This week we commission and thank them for their ministry. - Fr. Last week I talked about how every sin we have ever committed or ever will commit has already been forgiven by God. Our response to that grace is to place ourselves at the foot of the Cross in the Sacrament of Reconciliation

(Confession). This week sort of follows up on that with the parable of the generous vintner. It was a common thing in the ancient world (and even the modern world in some places, like Home Depot) that day laborers would gather in central square and those landowners and contrac-tors who needed workers would go there to hire them for the day. The usual daily wage was a silver coin worth ten donkeys called a denarius. (Hence the name, for you Latin scholars out there.) A typical workday was from dawn to dusk. Given the brief hiring process, the owner usually had to keep an eye on the workers so that they didn’t slack off or steal his stuff. The odd thing about the story is that he keeps going there at different hours of the day. This should be the first hint to the lis-tener that my thoughts are not your thoughts/nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. (Is 55:7) This is an important thing for us to keep in mind, especially in a parish like this. Alaska is one of those places where longevity brings credibility and status. People will introduce themselves to you and immediately tell you how long they have been in the state, in the parish, in the neighborhood, etc. There is a temptation to think of oneself as a bit more important or deserving simply be-cause one has been here more than one winter. At the same time, we Alaskans and St. Patrick’s folks are pret-ty darn good at welcoming the newcomer. What matters is that at some point we have been invit-ed into the vineyard. When we get there is meaningless. Let us strive then to welcome others into this little part of the vineyard we call St. Patrick’s Parish, and to invite as many as we can into the parish family. The parish webministers are looking for regular folks like you to help review the new web page design. Once we get the model in place, we need folks to look at it and give feedback so that it works in the best possible way. It’s Catechetical Sunday! The

theme this year is “I received from the

Lord what I also handed on to you.” I

would like to take this time to thank all

previous catechists for their time. While

this is a strange year, I am incredibly

grateful for the catechists who have vol-

unteered their time this year: Tom Ba-

lensiefer, LouAnn Balensiefer, Krissy

Hunt, Sarah Lindamood, Robyn Rehman,

José Pabon, Angela Shemel, and Ted

Greene. Please keep them in your pray-

ers this year.

If you have ever thought about teaching

the faith, at any age level, please send

me an email. Along the lines of this year’s

theme, I hope to use this year to train

anyone interested. I am handing on the

tools of catechesis to anyone who ex-

presses interest, without any commit-

ment. Please let me know if you would

like to join us.

Faith Formation registration for

all grade levels is ongoing. Forms

can be mailed in, dropped off, or emailed

to Mary.

2020 Don’t Get The Flu

Well, the beards are safe...for now. There were no new pledges to the Archbishop’s An-nual Appeal this week. We are still at 168 pledges, which is just over 15% participation. If we reach 30% participation (330 pledges) by Christ-mas, John Fulton, Deacon Mick and Ed Grantier will shave their beards! Fr. Leo has started to grow one so that he can join in the fun. A pledge of any amount counts. Thanks for your generosity. St. Patrick, pray for us!

thanks to Ed Grantier and John Fulton, in the Elec-

tronics Ministry, who helped set up the live feed to

the Deacon’s Hall for the overflow crowd. We will

continue to make adjustments as we gain more ex-

perience. Your suggestions are welcome!

the apostles “went forth and preached

everywhere, while the Lord worked with

them and confirmed the message by the

signs that attended it.” (Mark 16:20)

We are all called to proclaim the good

news, in whatever way the Lord has led

us. For some of us, that is catechesis.

For others, that is ministering to the sick,

homeless, or imprisoned. How are you

proclaiming the gospel this week?

Driveway Construction Chugach Electric will be excavating the area along the north side of East 20th Avenue at the edge of our parish property in order to bury the

electrical lines. This work will involve the closing of the main parish driveway for various periods of time. During times when the main driveway is closed, possibly including a weekend, please use the Haligan driveway at the south end of the property to access the parish parking lot. Thank you!
